Reviews
Madame Web (2024)
Atrocious Tripe
Waffling along this movie gets nowhere incredibly slowly, shifting through a painfully predictable..."plot", alongside miserable characters with no depth or real linkage to the original comics.
The Director clearly thought they were being creative with the confusing and annoying scene cutting and weird depiction of the main characters skills manifesting, but it just looks like a 4yr olds attempt at art.
Overall, a movie I skip forwarded through with great sadness and annoyance while suffering through this B movie 80s style rubbish, quite honestly I wouldn't even say "just speed watch it" to anybody because drawing your own comic would be a better experience.
Renfield (2023)
Nearly there
Enter yet another Vampire movie.
Gleefully, Nicholas Cage is cast as the Dracula we never knew we wanted to see, and is superb in the dark prince's cursed boots.
Following quite literally behind him, is his Familiar, or lackey, the rather brilliant Nicholas Hoult. The young Hoult has evolved into a mesmerising actor with very uncanny yet light resemblance to Hugh Grant.
While the two Nics are carrying the film the storyline wanders off and decides to try wrestle a personality for itself. Sartsing off strong with a fun gimmick applied, it rapidly degenerates into twaddle and excessive use of said gimmick.
Still a fun and very watchable movie, not one I'll be listing to sit down and repeat the experience.
History of the World: Part II (2023)
God of Comedy does giddy God things.
Mel Brooks....
...while that should be a sufficient review in it's own right, I'm inspired to be a tad more thorough in the face of the incomprehensible negativity shown here towards this comedic genius' probably final addition to the world of comedy.
The humour is an interesting mix of current affair references, along with typical American slapstick, and some truly ingenious wit and meticulously constructed punchlines.
While a fair amount of the humour will go over most people's heads, the delivery often is sufficient to still entertain as the popular culture references might wash over a few and the historical references a few others.
The format of multiple short skits with very little continuity is not an issue at all unless you are expecting some kind of linkage, which honestly should not be expected as the original movie might have been longer skits, but were still skits.
Joyfully, the original movie promised episodes in Part 2, and there they are! Hitler on Ice, Jews in Space.....etc..
Mel Brooks ability to craft humour has not dimished in the slightest, and his ensemble of comedic actors all work together wonderfully to round out a masterpiece.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Not a bad movie, but not a Star Wars movie.
As a movie outside of the Star Wars universe it might actually be viewed as "not bad". The glaring holes in plot and continuity would be forgivable then.
The visuals and CGI is great, but what movie isn't these days?
This, however, should not be viewed as a Star Wars movie at all.
Not only have these people torn apart and destroyed established canon with a brilliant post Death Star universe and rich evolvement of all the main characters as well as the entire universe as a whole (Extended Universe, now termed stupidly "Legends"), they have created a ridiculous plot line that does not pay attention to any of George Lucas' original intentions and direction of OUR world.
If Mark Hamill is seen as cagey in his replies, what do you think is going on?
Unfortunately, Kathleen Kennedy (Disney) unleashed these highly rated maniac Directors on our world without any tether to it.
Clearly, these creatives decided to take being fresh and innovative as a licence to go well off script so to speak.
While this set of movies very loosely follow the "Legends" world (Ben Solo becomes the Dark Sith Lord Darth Cadeus / Ben Solo becomes Dark something something Kylo Ren) some of it stretching rather too much (Darth Sidious practises resurrection through clones / Darth Sidious has some robot machine to live inside), one doesn't need to have knowledge or be a fan of that now defunct world to see how far off this creation is.
Lets finish this with a clear example for new fans of the universe. We all know Barney the pink dinosaur? How thrilled would you be to discover he's actually been a fish all along? Or how about Mad Max gives up driving cars for riding a bicycle. Or Joey from Friends turns out to be a Mensa candidate all along.
That is how terrible this assault on the Star Wars Universe has been.
