Northanger Abbey (2007)
The C-Student's Northanger Abbey
I suppose it's a pretty period piece if one hasn't read, or understood, the novel, but it is certainly not Austen. Misses on the sophistication of her satire and social observation. In fact, it makes the whole thing rather a gothic, adds dialog not in the text or spirit of the novel, and makes the discovery of the pages in the chest utterly pointless as they (a) appear to be old, and (b) are not tied into the tale's denouement.
Streamers (1983)
Haunting
It's been 36 years since I saw Streamers in the theater, the one and only time I saw it. What I most recall was how claustrophobic it became, and ho riveting the acting was. If a measure of good drama is its ability to leave the viewer shaken, this one succeeds utterly.
The Irishman (2019)
Brilliant
I went in ambivalent, having heard about the length and the de-ageing, but also knowing that I'd almost certainly never see this crew together again, and so I should see it on the big screen.
It never drags, the de-ageing did not distract me in the least, and the performances were wonderful, particularly DeNiro's and Pesci's understated work. Yes, it's autumnal, almost wintry, but that elevates it above Goodfellas, for all of that film's visual pleasures.
