Ripley (2024)
Cinematic Big Time Flop
The cinematography is fantastic. And that's exactly where it ends.
The writing is atrocious. Not a single line of good dialog. The action is trodding, bordering on non-existent. The acting is terrible (except for a briefly shown Italian postal worker). And unfortunately the direction doesn't make up for any of it. What a sad waste of a good concept and a good cinematographer's work.
In the prior two movies, the Dickie character was vibrant and the Ripley character was curiously deceptive, but never-the-less likeable. The characters is this version fall completely flat. I found myself caring nothing about what they did next or what became of them. The butchering script and direction left me feeling as if someone had taken an oar to my head.
And so I have bailed, never to return. What a shame. My wife and I had been looking forward to this.
Sniper Elite 5 (2022)
Absolutely Horrible
They've removed everything I liked about Sniper Elite 4. It's way too easy to do the thing you don't want to do and way too hard to do the thing you want to do. For example, once I open a safe I have to stand in front of it and make tiny adjustments to the player's position to select the one thing in the safe I want to pick up. And why do Germans stand in a field carrying on a conversation when no one is around? It makes no sense. And after you kill an NPC and want to search it, the games uses the same button for picking up his weapon that you use to search his body, so I'm constantly picking up weapons I don't want. I simply can't play this game. It's way too frustrating for all the wrong reasons.
Night Sky (2022)
An Endless Array of Dangling Carrots
I made it to episode 3. I feel like I deserve a medal for that level of patience. True, the elevator didn't move, so I moved. I got off. Just an endless array of dangling carrots.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: Beyond Atlantis (2022)
Change is not always good
Not a fan of the new Crow. What makes Crow so endearing and funny is his passive aggressive snarkiness. This dainty-voiced female elated affectation just doesn't work for me.
It's Alive (1974)
Worst Editing Ever
I have never seen a film so poorly edited in my life. And the lighting is inconsistent and unnatural. The acting is like 70's television drama. I can't think of any redeeming reason to watch this, except maybe to laugh at the absurd 70's kitchen decoration. Yes, that's a fully-carpeted kitchen.
Red Dead Redemption II (2018)
Where's the Open World?
I've played this game for hours and still haven't gotten to open world exploration! I hate being tethered to quest stories!
Saturday Night Live: Jason Bateman/Morgan Wallen (2020)
Thank God for Kate McKinnon
Kate McKinnon is the only reason I check out this show anymore. And the rest off the cast makes it difficult even to do that.
The Conners (2018)
Way Too Negative
My wife and I had to stop watching this, and she's the biggest Roseanne fan around. It started off okay, with a lot of promise, but then it kept getting darker and more negative and the humor doesn't balance out the negativity anymore. The world around us is too negative right now. We don't want to tune in to a show that compounds it.
American Horror Story: Checking In (2015)
Enough with the Pornography!
This episode started out a solid 9 but gradually dropped to a 5 because of the long unnecessary GaGa scenes and the rampant pornography. That's not the kind of entertainment I look for or want to be bludgeoned with on network television. It managed to redeem itself to a 6 in the final scenes. Just not sure I want to put myself through any more of the gratuitous sexual content by continuing to watch this season.
American Horror Story: Bitchcraft (2013)
Enough Already
Nearly every single person in this season who dies is brought back to life. By mid-season I stopped caring who got killed because I knew they'd be ressurected by the next episode. Enough already. The killings have turned into one long drug out cliche.
