Iron Chef: Quest for an Iron Legend (2022)
Entertaining, cringe at times
I like the show, it's versatile, you learn about ingredients and meals of the whole world. That being said, Mark Dacascos is hardly bearable. I need to skip his parts cringing at his behaviour. No idea who thought that would be funny.
Otherwise: the judges know their stuff, the music is a little exhausting, the contestants are interesting and the food seems delicious.
Yellowstone: No Good Horses (2018)
Nice visuals, WORST characters
Nice camerawork. Other than that..
1. The sexy but crazy woman, obviously has to be naked at some point, visibly for audience, and tries to make her brother beat her, because this is how written female character show grief
2. The white saviour brother, the nice guy with a kill count of 4(?) in 3 episodes now
3. His marriage, in which he never tells his wife what's going on but the audience has to believe in their love somehow
4. Rainwater being in prison for what reason exactly?
5. the cowboy comitting murder making it look like suicide but actually just a nice, warm-hearted guy trying to make the girl love him...
Sorry but the writing is questionable to say the least. Full of stereotypes, archetypes and predictable. I hope it gets better.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Oh (Wonder) Woman
This didn't work.
A stuffed yet boring plot, B-movie material with AAA-budget, wants to be campy and self-aware yet meaningful and so deep with its message at the same time. I was bored and sometimes even mad because they had great material like the new outfit and blew it anyway. Music is forgettable and they even use stuff from other films (Sunshine Adagio D-Minor) though they have Hans Zimmer as composer?!
Visuals aren't special and effects, I'm sorry, look cheap.
One silver lining: Chris Pine and especially Pedro Pascal (who seemed to have a great time, good for him) are brilliant actors. But I guess we knew that already.
The Business of Drugs (2020)
Powerful & Informing
Greaty visuals, diverse topics and locations and what I especially appreciate is the number of perspectives the episodes show. So called criminals, doctors, users, law enforcement... while the host doesn't always hold her personal opinion back, people with different takes on the matter have a voice. I felt educated and informed.
Skin Decision: Before and After (2020)
Something's off
Patients with heart-breaking stories. However, the surgeons tone doesn't match that at all and the production is so overproduced it's almost cringeworthy, because while the patients open their hearts their after reveals seem like ads.
The hosts lacks humanity. Pacing is boring. However it's great the patients got help - I'm just not sure why it needs to be documented in this unworthy way.
The Letter for the King (2020)
A very flawed show and I haven't read the book.
Sadly, this didn't work. The actors seem like they are very talented but very miscast mostly. (Ruby Serkis and some of the smaller children parts are fine tho.) The music steals motives from GoT and other fantasy films/shows. The plot is generic and forced. The main character is very very pale, he seems in a bad mood the whole thing through and just cannot bear the weight of a show on his shoulders (not the actors fault, it's def the writing. The horse shows more personality.) The humor is very cringe worthy. And the plot lacks consistency (the pacing is SO off!). It has some beautiful shots, but that seems to be due to New Zealands beauty more than a great camera work.
A disappointment, I really wanted this to work out, since I loved The Witcher on Netflix.
Dirty Money: The Man at the Top (2020)
Nice!
Great episode in a brilliant season 2. One thing that distracts is the weird framing of most interviews. Like they wanted to be edgy with it but it didn't quite work, because you only see half the face of the talking person. However, the other visuals are nice.
Restaurants on the Edge (2019)
Light entertainment with some cultural value
I expected some imrpressions of different countries, cultures and food - and I wasn't disappointed. I loved the variety of countries the restaurants they filmed in. Every episode was different thanks to that. The hosts are likable, a little over-excited tho and I wish they showed and involved the restaurant owners more. The show sometimes seems staged making it cringy - but it's entertaining and gives some valuable information about local costums. It's also filmed beautifully.
