The Batman (2022)
The Batman - Dark, Gritty, and Compelling
This was definetly my favorite superhero movie of this year. Robert Pattinson was good as Bruce Wayne, and Colin Ferril, Zoe Kravitz,Jeffrey Wright, and Paul Dano are all standouts. The plot is pretty good, even if a little rushed and messy at times. I liked most aspects of it, but I can't get into the aspects I didn't like as much without spoilers. Riddler was a decent villain, played well by Paul Dano, and I thought he was compelling and intriguing enough. The tone of the movie is my favorite part. It's super dark and it's helped by the fact that this movies portrayal of Gotham is my favorite yet. I wouldn't say I'd recomend this movie to somebody who just wants constant action, but if you want an interesting story with compelling characters and the occasional action sequemce, then this might be the movie for you.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Avatar: The Way of Water - Bloated, Disjointed, and Gorgeous
I never understood the hype around the first movie. The visuals were great but everything else was kinda lackluster. Same with this one. Lots of people love it because of the visuals, which yeah they're amazing, but everything else lacks. The story is simple, and at some points bad, the character work makes no sense, and there is lots of bad acting. The only good ones really are Sam Worthington, Gamora, and Stephen Lang. The start of the movie gets right into the action, which can make it feel rushed at points which is weird because the movies like 3 hours long. The second act slows down, but I honestly enjoyed it. And then the third act is pure action and chaos, which again I enjoyed, but just because I enjoy something doesn't make it good. The final act is insanely messy and convoluted that it is hard to overlook. But anyways I thought it was an enjoyable movie that was mostly saved by visuals.
Glass Onion (2022)
Glass Onion - A Fun and Enjoyable Sequel
I wouldn't say Glass Onion is as good as the first one, but it definetly holds up. Don't expect it to be exactly like the first one because it isn't. The cast for this movie is kind of insane. Daniel Craig, Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Kate Hudson, and that one chick from Outer Banks were definetly my standouts. This movie is almost more enjoyable than the first, but I wouldn't say it surpasses it. It has a slow begining, but the cast makes it enjoyable. Once the mystery kicks off it gets pretty intense but, without spoilers, there is a part about 3/4 into the movie that kinda ruins some of the suspense of the rest of the movie. That being said I think it was an overall great experience and a satisfying sequel. Can't wait for the third one.
Black Adam (2022)
Black Adam - A Big, Dumb, Generic Superhero Action Film
Don't go into Black Adam expecting some well-written, powerful film. Instead, go into it expecting Dwayne Johnson punching a bunch of people and good visuals and you won't be dissapointed. Dwayne Johnson pretty much just plays himself in this movie, as he does in every movie so not much to say on that note. Most of the side characters are not well acted, with the exception of the hawk guy and Dr. Fate. The effects and cinematography are really good looking, but there are some scenes with excessive slow motion shots that look kinda stupid. But yeah, just go into this film wanting some stupid superhero film and nothing else.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - A Messy, But Powerful, Sendoff
This movie is sort of all over the place. There are too many bloated plotlines crammed into one movie that kind of sour the overall experience just a small bit. But other than that I can say that I enjoyed this movie a lot. I thought the villains were pretty cool, well written and intimidating enough. The performances are great, with Angela Basset as the standout. Like I said earlier, the plot feels a little bloated and at some points rushed, especially in the second act. This leads into the almost 3 hour runtime. There are some scenes that drag on a little too long, but there are also some scenes that I thought should have gone on longer. But thise are my only real complaints with this movie. The sendoff for Chadwick Boseman was incredibly done and emotional. Overall, I thought this was really a good, satisfying movie, and a powerful goodbye to Chadwick Boseman.
The Northman (2022)
The Northman - Impressive on All Fronts
If you go into this movie wanting nothing but a straight forward Viking action revenge flick then you will be dissapointed. Despite the overall good score, I've seen plenty of bad reviews on this movie which is sad because I thought it was brilliant. Most of the bad reviews say it's boring which I would counter by saying that it's just not that kind of movie (mostly). It does have scenes of viking madness, filled with guts and gore, but it also takes its time to breathe and build up the movies conflict.
This movies cast is also exceptional with Alexander Skarsgard as the standout. The only perfromance that I think could have been better was Nicole Kidman. It's not entirely her fault either, she just kind felt out of place in the movie. But other than that I really felt that this was an extremely enjoyable, very creative, and satisfying movie.
Andor: Rix Road (2022)
Wow...
That was perfect in every way. This episode has so much emotional weight, and is a true and satisfying culmination to all of the neccessary buildup. Every actor gets to shine with the great dialogue they are given. The sets and effects continue to immerse you in this world. And the music is especially great in this episode. This really feels like a finale. It leaves things open for season two, but also manages to satisfyingly close most of the storylines from this season. I genuienly don't understand how anyone can dislike this episode.
Absolute 10/10, probably my favorite. Btw don't miss the end credits scene.
Andor: Daughter of Ferrix (2022)
Just Perfect
This is a slower episode after the previous one, but it manages to keep your attention the whole way through. This is an extremely creative episode with some great new character designs and interesting new landscapes. This episode is filled with grief, heroism, and rebellion. Diego Luna, Stellan Skarsgard, Genevieve O'Reily, Denise Gough, and pretty much everyone else in the show continue to give stellar, grounded performances that add to the already fantastic script. This episode does a great job with setting things up for the finale. I honestly think this is just a perfect episode that couldn't have been done any better than it was.
10/10.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Obi-Wan Kenobi - How Was This Approved?
This genuinely feels fanmade due to some cheap looking sets, bad space battles, bad writing, and some poor casting choices. Moses Ingram is, in my opinion, not a good actress. This is a problem because she is one of the main focuses of the show. That being said, I don't support the people who were attacking her on social media. Ewan McGregor, Haden Christensen, and Indira Varma do well with what their given, which is not much. This show is not without it's moments, but unfortuneatly it also is filled with strange Directorial choices, bad dialogue, messy and unfocused writing, and an overall feeling of pointlessness. There are also some things in this show which I can't get into because of spoilers, that make no sense when watching the original trilogy. But there is some good in this show like Ewan McGregor and Haden Christensen. This show is carried by caring performances from some of the actors that this show would be nothing without. Other than a few good performances and cool moments, this show was extremely dissapointing and I don't know how it got approved.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part IV (2022)
Nuh Uh
How was this made by Disney one of the biggest companies in the world. It feels fanmade. There are so many stupid moments here. Tala slaps a stormtrooper? Like what? And don't get me started on Obi wan hiding a whole ass ten year old leia in a trenchcoat. But's it's not just the writing and stupid decisions, it's also the sets and visuals. Some visuals are cool but most of it just looks cheap. Also Reva continues to be unbearable. I find myself rooting for the other inquisitor. Also who is wade? There were some cool moments like the darth vader part and when obi wan drowns all the stormtroopers but thats it.
4/10.
Loki (2021)
Loki - The Best MCU Show So Far
Loki exceeded my expectations in almost every way. The Cinematography is breathtaking, the tone is almost claustrophobic and intriguing, and the music by Natalie Holt is just something else. The only complaints I have about this show are nitpicks at best and don't really mean anything. Tom Hiddleston is great as Loki, and his and Owen Wilson's chemistry is on another level. This show is just so creative with it's concepts but it also manages to execute them well, unlike some other projects in phase four. Every episode feels so different in a good way which makes going into a new episode fun and interesting as you know you'll be getting something new a different. Unlike the other MCU shows, Loki's finale is not dissapointing in the slightest. I would even argue it's the best part of the show as it showcases some great performances and has real MCU reprecussions. I don't think this show could have been done any better than it was. Very excited for season 2.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021)
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier - A Decent Enough Slow Burn
The beginning of this show is pretty good in my opinion. The first three episodes and especially four are very solid. I do have some problems with them but i found them mostly enjoyable. After that the shows kind of falls off. Most of the Marvel shows suffer from rushed finales because of the stupid 6 episode format and this one is no exception.
Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan have great chemistry which makes for some fun banter, but it's really Wyatt Russell as John Walker who steals the show. But I do have my problems with the show. Obviously the finale, but there's aso the Flag Smashers. The Flag Smashers are probably some of the worst villains in the MCU. They're not intimidating, they're writing is bad, and they are just not compelling characters. There are also some pushed agendas that pop up but that is just a small nitpick. I do think the show could have been done better which is what I've said about most MCU projects in phase four, but I still enjoyed most of the show.
8/10.
WandaVision (2021)
WandaVision - A Bumpy, But Fun Ride
This show has a lot of ups and downs for me just like Doctor Strange 2, but again, I think that the good mostly outweighs the bad. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany deliver great performances that carry this show. Most of the sitcom episodes are fun and intriguing but can drag on at points and really affect the overall quality of the show in my opinion. The S. W. O. R. D. Plot is cool I guess but is filled with stale and boring characters like Monica, Darcy, and Hayward. That being said, Randall Park as Jimmy Woo is still a joy to watch.
As for the writing, it is intriguing and mysterious or the middle portion of the show, but kind of fizzles of towards the end. Other than the second to last episode, the final episodes of this show are pretty dissaponting. There are some rushed plots and messy cgi battles that just make for a very unremarkeable ending. But one thing this show does well is portray Wanda's grief and this is mostly due to Olsen's amazing performance. I personally think this show has a very cool and creative concept, but could have been executed much better.
7/10.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Spider-Man: No Way Home - Fanservice Done Right
The hype for this movie was immense when it came out and I have to say it didn't dissapoint. This movie is filled with great performances from Tom Holland, Willem Dafoe, Zendaya, and some who I can't get into without going into spoilers. This is an emotional journey filled with hype moments, tense moments, and absolutely devastating moments. The opening of the movie can feel a little rushed at times though. It feels like it is scrambling to get all the characters in their places for the 2nd and 3rd acts but in the end it isn't that big of a complaint. The score by Michael Giacchino as well as the cinematography are also really great aspects of this movie. This really is a cinematic experience that you don't want to miss.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022)
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - A Creative Mess
This movie had its fair share of ups and downs for me. I thought the first 20 or so minutes of this movie were not very good at all. It was messy, oddly paced, and not very engaging. Then the film gets good or about 15 minutes, hosting some particularly creative fight scenes. This is how most of the first and second act were for me. The third act is the only one which i found solidly engaging the whole way through. As for the performances, Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen are the obvious standouts, bringing just what you'd expect from them. Benedict Wong also brings all the charm to the screen per usual. But Xochitl Gomez' performance was the one that stuck out to me in a bad way. She is not a particularly good actress in my opinion, which doesn't help this movie much as she is pretty much the main focus point. She hams up her important lines, and delivers the rest like she's reading a book to a group of first graders.
But it's time to go into the aspects of the movie itself. Obviously the CGI is mostly great as you would expect, and Sam Raimi's directing gives this film an interesting creative flare and sets it apart from other MCU movies. Some of the plot points and character motivations are force fed in ways that don't make sense, and there are portions of the movie that feel rushed. These aspects, along with Xotchitl Gomez' character, really drag the movie down in my opinion. This could've been way better, and there are hints of a great movie in here, but overall it didn't really deliver in the ways I thought it would, albeit, still being an enjoyable watch.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Thor: Love and Thunder - A Badly Written, Colorful Disaster
I went into Thor: love and thunder with high hopes because of how good ragnarok was but i was very dissapointed. This movie is filled with so many jokes that really weigh the film down for me. The plot of the movie warrants a more serious tone but what we got was much different. The performances are mostly good with Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, and Christian Bale as standouts. Christian Bale really carried this movie for me, and if it were not for Gorr and his scenes being as good as they were, this would have a lower score. Other than the Gorr scenes, this movie feels like some sort of parody of the MCU. The jokes aren't funny, there is an overload of colors filling the screen, and the writing is, at some points, laughably bad. This movie is, in my opinion, a huge dissapointment coming from he same guy who did Ragnarok.
