Coolie No. 1 (2020)
2/10
The remake no one asked for. Please STOP!
26 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Sigh. It must be so interesting (pathetic?) to be David Dhawan who's ego is so massive, he thinks he can literally just do the same shi$ and get paid handsomely. He must have been waiting on pins and needles for his son to grow older, to prime him to become an actor and finally make a comeback remaking his entire roster of 90s movies again to cash out once more without using his brain ever again.

This is a remake no one needed. No one wanted. And no one should waste their time watching this derivative drivel. Somehow it's tackier and in much poorer taste than the original, without any of the charm, wit and performances to make up for it.

I have a penchant for the original movie. Yes it's misogynistic, reducing every female character into an air headed dancing buffoon who will blindly marry whoever. Yes, it pathetically makes fun of people with speech disorders, poor people, Asian languages, you name it. But the sparkling performances from Govinda, Sadashiv A. and the inimitable Kader Khan, the nostalgic music, the inane but hilarious premise, and witty dialogue made it a classic. I'll give David D the credit for a film I really enjoy (even though he ripped off a South Indian film!!)

Flash forward to the remake that shouldn't have been. There's nothing fresh or different aside from increasing the budget, shoot locations and wardrobe. The absolute worst thing about this movie is Varun Dhawan. It's like his father has overdirected him until he went absolutely filthy MAD. He screams, he pratfalls, he does stupid annoying voices, he dances like a monkey trying to earn a nickel. I hated every cringey second of his performance. It felt like such an insult to Govinda. It's tough because he's in literally every frame, hamming it up, and all the while, you know he realizes how awful he is, but he can't stop because daddy says so.

The new Pandit played by whoever that guy is has none of the charm and presence of the original. The mamaji character is reduced to a couple scenes as an idiot wearing overalls getting hit in the balls. Major eye roll. Paresh Rawal's character was changed the most because even DD knew no one can match up to Kader Khan. He tries but the hilarity of Hoshiyar Chand is completely lost.

Now, to the women. This was a chance to at the very least modernize the female characters, give them personalities, ambitions and minds maybe? Maybe next time when David D remakes this with his grandson. Sara Ali Khan is vapid. She's just there to prance around in expensive (and might I add tacky and odd) clothing. Her sisters character had more potential but she's hardly there.

The set pieces from the overly done homes to the weird amusement park song sequences are tacky. The story moves so fast that you feel no empathy or warmth towards any character. They bizarrely add a few new sequences that suck. The opening animation shows Coolie Raju's origin story. He was separated from his mother at a train station and became a Coolie after an animated Amitabh Bachchan adopts him?? Why?! Oh I get it, a guy like Varun who's supposedly handsome couldn't become a Coolie by choice but only by necessity. As if it's not an honest job that many people do. Also why the eff didn't the mom come back for him! He must have been doing that horrible Mithun impression so she decided to just leave him there. Lol!! A few other idiotic sequences have been added to show off Varun D's action abilities. Super boring and fast forward moments.

Overall, no. Just no.

It was fine until I realized the show is an ad for mass produced junk
9 May 2020
I enjoyed Nadiya on the British Baking Show and am so happy she's found her voice and a flourishing career afterwards. I love seeing someone who looks like me on tv! But what bothers me about the show is that each episode is clearly an ad for something.

One episode she used Marmite in a recipe and then visited a production plant. That's fine. But what was really disingenuous was when she used Scottish Farmed salmon in a recipe then visited the farms exploiting salmon and their natural habitat to mass produce. The way she was giggling while throwing food into the pens for the salmon made of corn and wheat?!! How on earth is that normal For a fish to eat? And Nadiya giggling about how nutritious the feed is and how wonderful the set up is for the fish with 100k of them crammed in a small space. They failed to mention the fake food coloring and god knows what else they feed these poor exploited animals.

Look, the whole food industry is effed up. But please stop pretending it's a cute all natural farm that isn't hurting the environment. Or that marmite is somehow nutritious and not producing tons of plastic waste. At least be honest about it.

This is about as far from cooking local, fresh food as possible. She told a woman to put spaghetti hoops out of a can onto fish and bake it. What!! Sorry Nadiya, this is a thinly veiled effort at Monetizing off a broken system and not the sincere effort to put forth good food and sustainable practices you're pretending it is.

Old fart trying to pretend he is young
18 November 2019
Sunny is 60 and trying to star opposite 30 something Kangana. I don't think so!! He's not only unattractive but he is the worst actor. He and his son should both quit films and spare us!

Torturous movie with bad acting and no story
21 September 2019
This film has no reason for existing. The story is boring and has been done a million times before in this exact iteration (lonely guy meets his manic pixie dream girl. They separate, realize they're in love, and conflict appears as a mean family member or in this case an ex).

The two leads are utterly awful. The film has been entirely designed to "launch" the next gen Deol who neither has looks, charm, talent, or acting prowess. His entire look is somehow dated and cheesy. His dialogue delivery is embarrassing. You wonder how his father directed him and either did not realized or hoped no one works notice. The female lead is actually a little better but has limited scope.

The music is weak, the title track is decent though. The locales are beautiful and possibly the only redeeming quality of the film. Direction is poor- the pacing is slow, the storyline doesn't move, the acting is lack luster.

By skipping this film, you're voting with your dollars to stop these terrible films from being made simply to introduce someone's child who is devoid of talent.

Boring tale of entitled millennials
1 August 2019
This show doesn't resemble the sharp wit or well etched characters of the Hugh Grant classic. It's a rambling pastiche of drama about characters you never care about. The London-LA thing is so unnecessary. I appreciate the diverse casting choices very much! But the writing is basic, the acting is pretty average to bad, and the pacing and production is weak. Watch if you're bored

Boring and pointless film
9 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I wasted nearly three hours trying to find something meaningful in this movie but came away with nothing! The plot is the same drivel we have come to expect. Two people fall madly in love after seeing each other once or twice. She's married, there's a war brewing, everyone seems to be connected by nonsense drama which ends with a main character dying. This was like a bad soap opera with a star cast that looked bored and as confused as us. The sets are fine but baffling. Where is this town with desert, water canals, giant palaces and lavish festivals being thrown daily? This was clearly someone's pet project and no one told him the story sucks. Most of the time someone is angry and crying but we have no idea why nor do we care. I'm glad this movie flopped big time. It's good support well crafted and earnest art, not a glorified music video being sold as a film.

Slow and boring
23 June 2019
Season 1 is so boring. Everyone is going on about random problems and the audience doesn't care. I couldn't get through more than 4-5 episodes

This was fun!
16 June 2019
Look, it's not a cinematic masterpiece nor does it set out to be. This is Adam Sandler at his recent best, a bumbling "detective" cheapskate and Jennifer Aniston in an energetic and bubbly avatar I very much liked. The mystery itself is contrived and silly but it was fun and somewhat twist laden with gorgeous European locales to boot. Worth a watch on a night in!

I thought this was cliched and terrible
20 May 2019
I don't really get why people like this movie. I finally watched it and found it to be long, boring, predictable, hammy, and just all-around unnecessary. There's no real story, our lead pair meet then keep running around to different places and getting in trouble with south Indian gundas for 3 hours. Deepikas acting is pretty bad to average. Horrible accent and she looks not very good for most of the movie. SRK is fine but looks way too old for her. The direction is exceedingly poor with a boring pace, strange scene setups and ton, cheesy camera work. Really a lame movie you should skip.

Here we go again. Another white dude playing this character rehashed again with elements of Bourne and homeland thrown in. Bad guys are brown middle eastern terrorists (surprise!) Zzzzzzzzzzzzz Have an imagination for gods sake. No one needs another definitive rehash of source material made into film 7 other times.

Predictable and vanilla but fine if nothing else is on
11 April 2018
This show is just what you expect at every turn. You have vanilla Jenna Fisher as a middle aged mom who is newly single and dating. She's okay, she seems talented in a very limited way, only able to play Pam like straight laced characters. Then there's the guy, Oliver Hudson who I find wholly unappealing for some reason. He's kind of trying to hard all the time and there's honestly just not much for him to do. The show so far revolves around miscommunications over who's dating or wanting to get back together, kid drama side plots, etc. Nothing special or new in this at all. At every twist, it's completely obvious what's going to happen next.

Everything about this show is vanilla. The characters are mostly white average people. There's a funny asian side kick type. The kids are angsty. Skip it and watch something better!

Wonder Woman (2017)

Great fun with a woman at the center
29 November 2017
TLDR: This is a fun, quintessential superhero movie with an incredibly charismatic female heroine at the heart of it. It's not perfect, but it's still an important film. A must watch!

I can't even deal with all the superhero movies coming out these days. Film after film with generic white males dressed in tights starts to get boring and unappealing. Enter Wonder Woman -- Gal Gadot is resplendent as the Amazon woman turned heroine who is both a bad ass and an empathetic human being at the same time. It's so important to show characters like this, with women and people in underrepresented groups at the center. Aside from all that, the movie itself is fun! It's tightly paced and action packed from start to finish. The villain is a bit silly and some of the mystic elements are eye roll inducing. But generally, it's a solid and fun romp which is what super hero movies should be!

Watch it and make sure the young women in your life see it. After seeing this movie, my 7 year old niece said: I didn't know a girl could be so strong? It made me tear up to know that she never thought it was possible. I'm glad this film was made.

Sweet, fun with some flaws
29 November 2017
I'm starting a series of TLDR Reviews (too long, didn't read). So i'll cut to the chase.

TLDR: Cute romance with highly attractive teens that turn in great performances, but some flaws in the story-line itself. Watch when bored or in the mood for a romance.

Everything, Everything is a fun film about teenage love that has super attractive leads with great chemistry at the center.

The pacing is good, the sets and look of the film are vibrant. The leads convince us of their love, and you feel for them. There's a twist in the film that I saw coming, but many did not.

Flaws: the mother character was poorly fleshed out and I felt the actress portraying her was wooden and emotion-less, so it was hard to care about her. The abusive father angle was half baked and unnecessary. The astronaut could have been an interesting metaphor but was not well fleshed out. There are some cinematic liberties taken that are annoying but don't make or break the film (Maddie's illness in Hawaii was a bit dramatic and the whole premise of the twist is highly far fetched).

Dreary and boring
29 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
TLDR: Boring, bleak film without a point. Skip it

I made the mistake of watching this on a plane. I would rather have been staring at the overhead bin! This film is so...boring. It's hard to understand what's happening because the characters won't come out and say things properly. They leave sentences half unsaid, who knows why? The main character Phillip comes off as a poorly developed, angry man without a purpose. Rachel is a mysterious presence but we never even get to the bottom of whether she killed her previous husbands or was just in bad circumstances. So then what was the point of this film?? The way Phillip falls in love with Rachel and shows his love is pathetic as well. And why did she randomly kiss him all the time if she was not into him? His strong desire to leave his entire inheritance to her before he even knows if she loves him makes NO sense.

Stupid film that need not have been made. The only good thing was in the end Rachel died. I wish Phillip died too!
