Battleground Melbourne (2022)
mandatory viewing...
As the states demonstrated that they could flex the muscles the public didn't know they had, while failing to without provide the necessary evidence or studies to justify their actions, it's essential that documentaries like these are viewed by as many people as possible all around the world, especially in the so-called democracies.
With the handling of covid locally ad globally, the devil was in the inconsistencies. While this documentary highlighted some of the inconsistencies well, I felt that it could have gone further by comparing the differences between the words and actions of the governments at local, state and federal levels, as well as celebrities and "influencers" on both sides. Perhaps chasing the supporters of Dan's narrative for comment might have been interesting. I personally lost my job as a health care worker due to the mandates in a different state. Comparing Australia against how other countries handled covid would have also been useful.
It was good to hear unknown songs in the soundtrack, however I felt that it could have done with an expanded repertoire of songs.
Overall, this was a brave and important piece of work that highlighted how average Australians dug in and stood their ground against one of the worst abuses of power in the history of Australia and possibly the democratic world. We can only hope it won't take this level of tyranny to wake up the masses in future.
Grass (1999)
Must see, striking similarities to recent events
A must see doco for anyone concerned about unelected and elected bureaurcrats alike pushing an agenda through lies, deceit and manipulation. Strikingly similar to what has been imposed on the public over the last couple of years, my only criticism is that out doesn't take a quick look at how prominent musicians in the UK were targeted in the late 60's by Officer Pilcher who was notorious for the enthusiasm with which he targeted pop stars as well as his dubious methods he used. Pilcher was then charged and resigned from the police force.
Furthermore, it would have been great to hear about people some of the most successful artists of the 20th century who were using marijuana and still functioning in society.
El cantante (2006)
A must for all music enthusiasts
Should not be missed by musicians and music enthusiasts, a fascinating insight into the beginnings of Salsa and the lifestyles of those in the scene at the time
Office Space (1999)
A real gem
Very funny, some great performances from lesser know actors. generally steers away the usual formulas.
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
A must see even for non Christians
I'm yet to determine if Jesus's treatment was as severe as depicted in the film, i hope not, but fear it might have been, this film had me questioning humanity and reminded me that humankind still hasn't moved beyond brutal regimes that practice torture...ironically some of these regimes call themselves Christians
Spy Game (2001)
Superb exploration of humanity
Every ounch of this movie explores humanity. In order to save Tom Bishop and Elizabeth Hadley, Muir goes against every rule he's taught Bishop, while at the same time using everything he's learnt as a spy to out wit the organisation he's spent his life dedicated to. This film has a complex plot that explores many themes. The soundtrack is superb, moving from beautiful orchestral scoring to edgy electronica, with a splash of contemporary rock to add context. Of course to make the film work, the plot might be stretched, and the final outcome predictable, but it's all worth it...we never really know if Bishop and Muir escape the law. The casting acting is brilliant. One of the best films ever made.
Brüno (2009)
high quality satire!
If you don't laugh at this film you're taking yourself too seriously. The real genious
is the masterfull use of absurdity to disguise the bravery, cleaverness and itelligence required to pull this project off,...so to speak. Thank goodness for Sasha and the crew who are able to make us laugh at those who take themselves to seriously, as in the the fasiin scenes, and those with twisted belief systems, as in homophobic community. It's a sad reality that the "proud straight man" and the religeous right are shown to be far for absurd than this film. Well done!
