Pitch Black (2000)
The glorious three percent
97% of all sci-fi is pure crap, but that 3% is what I live for. Pitch Black falls into the later grouping, and is one of the best sci-fi movies made. It's all about character or if convincing enough lack of character. Expecting the run-of-the-mill alien world survival story, I was very elated that it exceeding my expectations. Fry(Rhada Mitchelle) as a very self centered(you can't blame her) cargo pilot thrust into a position of authority wrongly accused of doing her best to save lives. Cole Hauser as a Bounty Hunter with no concern for anything but his cut and his drugs. Vin Diesel as a very cool and dangerous killer with little interest in anything else besides his survival. Vin Diesel is the highlight of this movie, with a complex character. He does an outstanding job and exceeds expectations. This was the role he was made for. Excellent movie for anyone-Except maybe little kids, but hell I probably would have loved this movie as a kid.
The Chronicles of Riddick (2004)
What happened Twohy
The movie was OK but it was nothing like I suspected it would be. Originally The Chronicles were supposed be about the time Riddick spent in Jail. There were also supposed to be three movies not one condensed one. Why did he change his focus, Pitch Black was awesome but it would have been your average sci-fi movie had it not been for Vin Diesel's character. Pitch Black was about aliens but the person we all wanted to know more about was Riddick thats why the next supposed three were going to be made. The movies were probably given the veto buy the studio but still, I wanted so much more. The plot was average, the action a little better than average, the illumination of the key characters..disappointing..very disappointing. They tried to shoot too high, for that Epic movie, but they ended with a very attenuated flop.
House M.D.: Words and Deeds (2007)
Its David Morse
I know no one likes Tritter, I would hate him if he wasn't so good at his job. I was elated that it did end the way it did but that doesn't make Morses character less important. His character provided conflict the same way Chi Mcbride did as Volger, and David Morse did an excellent job as always. Without some kind of conflict other than medical mysteries the show would probably flop, otherwise we would all spend our time watching autopsies(which actually are pretty interesting.) So please save the bad Tritter reviews for your own personal hatred. I hated him too for attacking House, but it kept me watching.
Cube (1997)
Sci-Fi at its best
OK lets admit that 97% of all sci-fi movies are terrible works of cinema, but the 3% really makes searching through the extensive sci-fi works at the movie store well worth it.
Cube is most definitely low budget, but it is one hell of a movie. The premise is excellent, I love the idea of people struggling through mazes- it reminds me of life, and the coordination of the scenes are impressive.
The acting is not real bad, which is good for a low budget film, and I think Nicole is so hot(even with the spots-DS9.) The ending was unique, and I didn't see it coming. They really have me by the b-lls on this one. They don't seem to give you any relevant information to the world outside the cube, so you will have to continue the series. The sequel wasn't too bad-they had a little more money but the old woman was too annoying to deal with for over an hour. The third release was pretty cheesy but I still enjoyed it.
If you're looking for a good movie on a Friday night, pray your local movie store has it(unlikely-but I've found it once or twice.)
Casino Royale (2006)
Finally a refreshing bond film
I don't know about most of you but I got tired of seeing the same old bond films. Gadget here, Gadget there, Explosion here, Explosion there, No plausible plot, and reliance on flashy special effects.
OK bond is blonde, I can deal with that, it even rhymes. Daniel Craig does an outstanding job like I suspected. He manages a bond that is a lot closer to Ian Flemings vision(in my opinion.)
For once the movie didn't try to keep my attention with a lot of cinematic tricks, it actually managed without them. Hardly any corny one-liners, although there were some.
My only complaints, the poker game was a bit long winded, but I guess I should have expected that reading the title. The villain was a little week too, I don't think I would be scared of him. They could have left the whole weeping blood thing out, besides I think he had enough money to fix a slight medical problem that wouldn't be conducive to a good poker game.
Anyone who is looking for a fresh bond prospective should see this film. I think you will find it entertaining. If you are looking for the same old bond I am afraid you will be disappointed, but please don't give it a bad rating just because it wasn't what you envisioned. It really was an excellent film. I am sad so many people are upset that it wasn't the same film they had seen before. I usually like new directions in films, it tends to keep them from getting boring.
My Big Fat Independent Movie (2005)
Eh
The movie was slightly funny, bearable to watch maybe. Unoriginal script is probably my main issue. If there is nothing else to do, go ahead watch it, don't expect it to be that novel independent film.
It probably would have been better if they didn't attack good films, normally attacking the bad ones is a slightly better approach. I'm not defending all movies portrayed in this film, ie; Big Fat Greek Wedding. The movie was well put together except for the script, so at least you wont be completely disappointed, and like I said it is funny in a sort of monotonous, "cliched"-(sorry) way.
All things being fair, I probably couldn't have done better.
Robot Jox (1989)
I can't believe how many good reviews there are
OK this movie had a terrible premise. Be serious according to the movie they had just been through an apocalyptic war yet they have money to buy huge robots and pit them against each other. Each country decides instead of investing into rebuilding their country they would rather fight with robots no one could afford. Here's a better idea, lets rely on our most inept resource, jocks, to fight our battles.
Everyone says what about the director, what about him. He makes a good movie, he makes a bad movie. There is no reason to give this movie some credit just because of the director, maybe he was asleep? I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, because it was so cheesy and ridiculous I had to laugh. I actually had a good time watching it, well except for the cowboy mentor who turns out to be an assassin(trust me no one would see this guy as an assassin, so it is a surprise, however lame) What kind of training exercise is a jungle jim anyway. I was sad to see Mst3k had not done this one. I am giving a two star rating however because nothing could be as bad as "manos the hands of fate."
The budget does not matter either, I have seen plenty of reasonable movies that had nothing for budgets like cube. The storyline was not even plausible and I have seen better acting in school plays. Surly they could have afforded an eleven year old from any middle school play.
Anyway pick it up, it is a fun movie to watch.
