Emma. (2020)
Pantomime.
Not once was I in any way convinced by anyone.
Something went very awry during the making of this picture.
Was the director even in the room I wonder?
Flynn was believable sometimes.
Personally I was expecting Nanny McPhee to turn up at any moment!
La promesse (2020)
Unbelievable.
This is weightless drifting overlong character posing from the start. So, so drawn out. Could of been watchable and engaging neat and tidy in 2 episodes.
Watched this based on the constant references to "..from the creators of 'Spiral'," well you could have fooled me. Spiral was committed to authenticity, depth of character , developing and engaging storyline and interwoven plot lines. The Promise gave me lazy posing, cliche after cliche ( including lots of wavy forest skies ) and lashings of cheese, so much so I half expected Obe one and Anakin to appear at the end of the table in the final scene!
Disappointing.
Around the World in 80 Days (2021)
"Now what's he gonna do?"
We loved this. The above title being the most common exclamation as my wife and I turn to look at each other on the sofa with a smile.
Good cultural setting. The pompous And privileged are suitably infuriating, as is Mr Tennants initially blundering Mr Fogg as a pampered and inflated man of substantial means but vacuous inadequacy of self belief or confidence, ...but then of course there is a doozy of a journey to be had!
The casting is solid and "Foggy's" companions are equal to him in depth of character. In fact we were at times more engaged in their personal journeys than "The" journey which takes them in and out of many a sticky situation.
Well made, well written, well casted, believably acted, engaging subplots and completely different to anything else on Tv right now. Congratulations to all, we await to see what season 2 can bring.
Roadkill (2020)
Empty People.
This has such potential. Didn't happen. Not sure if it was just that people didn't want to do it, we're uninspired by direction, just needed the work? Maybe it was just the wrong people in the wrong places? ...Casting? I love Helen McCrory. She is always amazing, somehow always brings authenticity , belief and depth. She's Simply brilliant with seemingly universal chameleon like skill to adapt to differing roles. In Roadkill, someone has given her something more at home in League of Gentleman to than a serious political drama, and she wasn't the only character who seemed to be itching to get home to a nice cup of cocoa and an early night. An overwhelming sense of unreality pervades throughout this production leaving me with the jaded sense of regret suggested accurately by its chosen title.
