A lost gem
7 February 2021
One of the most touchingly raw!y sexually romantic human movies ever made, sadly lost in mists of time. James Spader and Susan Sarandon both at their respective peaks of beauty also.

Wonderful fairytale rendition

I plan to buy copies for all my friends' children. Conjures the exact feeling of reading the unvarnished fairytales when young.

Perfect for Christmas 2020
13 December 2020
This got repeated last night, and watching just now I'm moved to tears. Because it was mace 3 years ago but is perfect right now. It balances some astute social insights with joyous and affirming relationship development and lots of jokes that land without ever punching down, puncturing pretension and blinkered prejudice deftly. But most of all, it makes me long for summer festivals, where the true joy comes from mixing people and music with abandon, and taking home better versions of ourselves as a result. Ben Elton is a truly gifted writer.

Doesn't ask for lockdown allowances
20 June 2020
Lockdown on screen to date has been either heartening in a make do and mend way, or hitting the emotive button. This breaks back into brilliantly professional, and in the case of episodes 3 and 4 that I've just seen, howlingly funny. Kudos to all.

Why make it so stressful?
18 April 2020
I know this is a drama but still. Three more stressy people it would be hard to find. I want to like this but very time I try to watch it gives me a tension headache.

Mesmerising
11 March 2020
I love this film with a visceral love, utterly obsessed. Those melted, plastic cruifixes. The heart-wringing beauty of young Keith Gordon, with his dark, yearning eyes. The beautiful discordance tugging you into the loving madness.

Playful smart and absolutely ravishing.

I am jealous of the next generation of students who will get to watch this in class. Faithfully takes the exact text of the book and breathes the humanity and passion whirling beneath the dazzling facade of the elite society that Autumn de Wilde and her talented cohort deliciously portray with mischief and delight.

Every rewatch reveals a new layer.

I can't help but be saddened by the decades of films we have missed out on through Autumn not being given the opportunity to direct earlier in her career, like Michel Gondry, with whom she shares that joint talent of visual flair with ability to coax amazing performances but I look forward to everything she does going forward.
