Scream VI (2023)
9/10
Scream (2022) + Scream 2 + Ready Or Not
10 March 2023
As a long-time fan of the Scream franchise, I was eagerly anticipating the release of Scream 6, the latest installment in this beloved horror series. Directed by Radio Silence, this movie promised to bring back the beloved characters and the same intense suspense that have made the previous films such a success. With the horror genre constantly evolving, I was curious to see how Scream 6 would fare in today's landscape and whether it would live up to the sky high expectations that I came in with. After 2 hours and 2 minutes of sitting through Scream 6 (end credits too), I can say that his was everything that I've been wanting in a Scream movie (for the longest time now), and so much more. Allow to highlight some of the best aspects of this film.

Opening. It's fresh, it's meta, it's wonderfully acted, and it's also pretty brutal. Without giving too much away, I will say that the first attack in the movie was almost hard to watch. This is a combination of the acting as well a the directing, making sure that the camera doesn't cut too much of the stabbing (and there is a lot of it). I've seen more horror movies than I care to admit, and this is one of the first times that I've had such a visceral reaction from an attack in a Scream movie.

New York. Speaking of something fresh, Scream 6 differentiates itself by not only moving to New York, but also leveraging various set pieces found in the city. Apartments, bodegas, dark alleys, subways, and you can't forget about the shrine. Aside from the phenomenal set pieces (I didn't forget about the ladder scene), Scream 6 plays well into the aspect that there can be so many people around you, but that doesn't mean that they are going to help.

The Calls. Roger L Jackson who has been 'The Voice' of Ghostface ever since day 1, returns yet again for some of his most menacing banter. Some calls are shorter, some longer, and some hit-home a little harder. "Hello Samantha" has such a nice ring to it.

Chase Scenes. Did you enjoy the chase scene in Scream 2 with Gale in the sound booth? Did you ever feel like the Scream series needed more of that? Then you will be very satisfied with what Scream 6 has to offer. Due to the limited budget in Scream 5, Scream 6 clearly listened to what the fans wanted, and they upped the ante with what feels like (almost) non-stop action. If the characters aren't busy pointing fingers at who could be the killer or moving the plot forward, you can expect someone to be running away from, or fighting for their life against Ghostface.

Ghostface. They weren't kidding about this. Ghostface is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the most menacing that we've seen so far. Ghostface just has no fear; attacking in public multiple times, attacking when people are in groups, as well as taking out anyone who gets in the way. Ghostface is also much more stabby, and you'll quickly discover that in the opening of the movie.

The Kills. Compared to the previous 5 movies, Scream 6 has the most amount of deaths. Keep in mind though, that not all of them will be on-screen. Also being compared to the previous 5 movies, this one has the most about of stabs... by far. I won't say much about the kills to avoid you putting 2 and 2 together, but the brutality is at an all-time high. They never take them too far in terms of the blood though (Terrifer 2 level), and I find that to be a good thing in the Scream franchise.

The Reveal. Despite the fact that I got spam-spoiled online, Scream 6 did a phenomenal job at pointing fingers at all of the right/wrong places. Anyone can be the killer, anyone can make accusations, and anyone can have an alibi. If I can know who Ghostface is and still be surprised by the execution when the big reveal happens? Then I can only say job well done.

Character Development. I saved the best for last. This was something that Scream 5 seemed to lack, which is understandable. There were 3 stories that needed to be told, and not enough screen time to appropriately dive deeper into the characters. Here, we get to know the Core Four as well as their friend group, and this film does a marvelous job at balancing not only the character development, but also the laughs, thrills, and chills. One moment you're having a bonding moment, and the next second Ghostface is kicking at your door, ready to do what Ghostface does best. The apartment scene comes to mind here, one of the biggest (and many) highlights of this film.

Despite Neve Campbell being absent, this film still managed to exceed my sky-high expectations, play with my emotions, and keep me "guessing" at the mystery of Ghostface and what their motive was. Scream 6 is everything that I wanted, combined with everything that I didn't even know I wanted in a Scream movie.

Scream (I) (2022)

Scream (1996) + Ready Or Not
23 January 2022
Coming from a die-hard Scream fan, it's easy to see just how much love the writers, directors, actors, and entire crew put into this movie.

Aside from the fact that the original trio was nicely weaved into the story, there are hundreds of callbacks, Easter eggs, voiceovers, and even special guests for fans to get excited for.

While Scream takes on a much darker tone, it ultimately succeeds thanks to:

-The script.

-Taking risks.

-Amazing pace.

-Crazy 2nd & 3rd acts.

-Its rewatchability factor.

-Spot-on meta commentary.

-The beautiful cinematography.

-Brian Tyler's phenomenal score.

-A brutal and relentless Ghostface.

-A great story that has lot of room for growth.

And that's only scratching the surface. While Scream pays a ton of respect for Wes Craven and what he previously created, Radio Silence also added their own flair to this movie, and it worked perfectly.

Overall, the wait was more than worth it. Scream is a film that was made by fans, for fans, and I sure as hell hope that Radio Silence gets to work on another sequel.
