Joker (2019)
Not a masterpiece but definetly a great movie
22 September 2020
Good side:
- Joaquin Phoenix's performance is gritty, brutal and so realistic that becomes awkward in a good way. The weight of the movie falls on Phoenix's shoulders and lifts it with such fluidity that at this point it's absurd to question his acting talent.
- This origin story clears all doubts of the clown prince of crime, for better or worse. "What's with the clown suit?" "What's with the laughter?" "Where did his followers come from?". It gives a good impression before these unknowns.
- Haunting setting.
- Whoever came up with the idea that Joker's laugh was a disorder is a freaking genius!
Bad side:
- I think the subplot about the possibility that Joker and Batman may be family was completely unnecessary. They're already thick as thieves. They're good vs evil. Order vs chaos. Yin and yang. I mean... you don't put powdered cheese on a cooked pizza, right?
- Its drama borders on emotional pornography. The Joker's most memorable quote is "all it takes is 1 bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy". Arthur was reduce to lunacy since day 1! Joker's philosophy is supposed to be that any guy can end up like him, that anyone can end up in hell. Arthur WAS BORN in it. This is basically Arthur's life: He was adopted as a child by a lower class woman with mental delusions who allowed her boyfriend to brutally abuse him causing him a trillion mental issues and now, friendless, if people are not ignoring him, they're assaulting him on every corner or making fun of him even on TV. Call me ignorant, but I don't think anybody is that miserable. It tries too hard to make us sympathize with him. For a moment I thought I was watching a live action movie about Sad Larry from Cyanide & Happiness.
