Grandma (2015)
10/10
Wonderful, timely film!
24 October 2015
Wow, what a breath of fresh air in the cesspool of recent films (okay, a few other exceptions.) As feminists, we roared. As parents, we nodded in recognition. As grandparents, we cheered at the clever handling of generational misunderstandings. As story-lovers, we appreciated a satisfying ending with validating resolutions. Especially liked the mirror rebuke of the 'Juno' film's preschool handling of full-range women's health care. Why does the right-wing hate women so much, and why do we tolerate that?

Paul Weitz, please write and direct some more films for these actors. We approve of this film!

Ugh. Double ugh.

Warning: Spoilers
My good spouse of many years said at the end, "If we ever go to Paris, let's watch a different movie about it first."

What a disappointment. Every line of sarcastic, cynical, needy character-non-development went nowhere.

Watching two good actors work so hard from start to finish to portray shallow one-dimensional people clawing at each other for validation and appreciation -- consistently either denied or bestowed and later betrayed -- was soul-numbing. We viewers learned that every possible opening for relational connection -- i.e., every chance that we might care about these narcissistic people -- would become just another set-up for recurrent emotional abandonment.

"This was written by a guy." I forget which one of us spoke the obvious out loud after the first ten minutes.

I found the most interesting characters in the film were the clever hotel security guys, who could think ahead enough to block the escape of these lying, cheating, empty, 60-something preschoolers. I wished the movie would have followed one of the security guys home and given us a story about a thinking human being with a learning curve.

A positive? Some of the views of Paris were enjoyable.

But for the rest of it, a horror-movie Ugh.

A good story well told.

Being in the U.S.A., I kept expecting this lovely poignant film to crumble into gratuitous violence or some other cheap surprise. As it went on, keeping everyone's motives human and showing them coming to do the right things in relationships, it ended up resting at the top of my recommendation list (even above Antonia's Line). Besides the simple story and impressive character acting by everyone, the experience and skill apparent in the lighting, color choices and sequence of each scene, the interesting angles of every take, and the top drawer casting were all distractingly above the norm. I kept thinking, 'Wow!' Still not sure why this is in the comedy category. We were out of Kleenex by the end, and totally content. If the English subtitles were big enough to read, it would be perfect.
