Another Gay Movie (2006)
Cute, funny, graphic...
I might have given this movie a 10/10 for being a gay-themed movie that can laugh at conventions while also having more to say than "We can laugh at ourselves!" But this isn't a perfect movie, and we don't live in a perfect world.
The cinematography is appropriate for the genre, but the lighting was poor in some scenes and the sets were inappropriately sparse at times. For example, the main character's only bedroom furnishings are his bed, a dresser, and a night stand. What high school senior has that empty a bedroom?
I've lived with lesbians. I hang out with lesbians. And while I know that they each have a quality of two that is similar to our out and proud lesbian protagonist, NO ONE is THAT graphic or publicly obscene in the lesbian community. And I know my share of offensive lesbians. Believe me...
The fact that none of the guys wants to openly admit to being a bottom is one of the truest comments on the gay community. Also, the drag queen mother? I know it was a Mommy Dearest reference but GEEEEZ that was one fugly woman! An all too often truism in the gay community as well.
Although I warned of spoilers I still want to be reasonably vague so as not to give away the farm...something our leads are all too eager to do. The many masturbation scenes are realistic without being offensive. Sadly the same cannot be said for many of the fantasy and real sex scenes. NOTHING is implied. The only thing missing is the close-up porno plumbing shots. Really. Give your audience a little more credit. Graham Norton's prosthetic aside, it was too, too, TOO much.
That being said, I can't imagine many people being so overwhelmed by the gratuitous, sometimes all too graphic, sexuality to not enjoy the majority of this movie. Another Gay Movie may as well be called Gaymerican Pie. The majority of the plot line is heavily borrowed on without being plagiarized (for the most part) and falls in line with other movies within the sub-genre of sex-based comedy seen in American Pie, Porkey's and Revenge of the Nerds. But the gays have certainly stepped it up a notch. Enjoy!
