Fall (2022)
No Notes, Flawless
Id like to preface this review by saying I have not seen many of the other movies of this kind with a couple of characters stranded in one location for the entire movie. Im aware that this type of plot is basicslly its own subgenre at this point and Fall was my introduction into it, and I loved it from beginning to end. I watched it twice (as I always do before reviewing a movie) and it definitely has rewatchability down. This movie follows 2 girls Becky and Hunter who climb the 4th tallest structure in America to get over the loss of their friend who died in a tragic climbing accident, but once they make it to the top of the tower the ladder breaks leaving them stranded atop the 20,000 foot tall tower. The first 20 minutes or so are dedicated to getting us to this point, but the next hour and a half is just attempt after attempt to get off this tower, and its very suspenseful. I watched this as a person with a fear of heights, and with my friend who is a rock climber, and we were able to appreciate it in different ways because of that. I loved the suspense of the whole film and my friend was able to relate to it because he was familiar with every fear the characters were feeling. Theres not much to talk about when it comes to the bulk of the movie, its all very interesting but the biggest talking point I have with this film is the plot twist
So in the film they lose their bag on some sort of dish off the side of the tower that isn't very far below them but without a ladder they can't reach it. At a certain point they devise a plan and hunter goes to retrieve it. She successfully reaches the dish, hooks the bag on the rope she climbed down with, and tries to climb back up, but right before she makes it to the top she slips and falls back down. Now were shown that she survives and makes it back up, but near the very end of the movie its revealed that she actually did die in that fall, and her appearance from that point forward in the film was all in Becky's head. When I first saw this it got my heart racing and it didn't stop till well after I walked out of the theater. But on my second time around I noticed the insane amount of clues they snuck in there alluding to the fact she isn't actually there.
The first and most obvious hint is the fact that after she dies hunter never does anything, all the actual actions taken to aid their survival and rescue were performed by Becky. Secondly, the night after she dies, Becky has a nightmare where she sees hunters corpse right next to her being eaten by vultures, and when she wakes up she's comforted by hunter telling her it was just a bad dream and everything is ok, when in reality this is just her brain trying to comfort herself because hunter did actually die and the dream was a response to that. Third, hunter never shows emotion after she dies, all her dialogue is just supportive words to Becky, she never shows anger, sadness, or worry, she's just a vessel of optimism for Becky because Becky is just creating this vision of her to keep her going. Fourth, when Becky tries to charge her drone with a light bulb thats above them, she drops her bag of supplies and hunter just watches it fall, and when Becky asks why she didn't catch it hunter has no response. 5th, this is more of an extention of #3 but when she flies the drone to send a note and it gets hit by a truck, Becky is devastated, she bursts into tears, she loses all hope, but hunter has 0 reaction. 6th, when Becky begins to dose off and lose consciousness due to hunger, hunter tries to keep her mind occupied by having Becky name her favorite wrestlers, but when Becky can't remember the name of one of her favorites, hunter helps her out by providing the correct answer, but as Becky reveals right after this line, hunter never watched wrestling. All these are perfectly placed subtle giveaways that hunter isn't actually here anymore. But my favorite thing out of every hint is the fact that when hunter falls to her death, you can hear her body hit the dish, even tho visually we see she "survives"
this movie has an amazing sense of setup and payoff, it feels almost every line in this movie is a setup to some later plot point, the light at the diner, the unnamed "special someone" in one of hunters old pictures, the vultures, the drone, the Instagram likes, everything that happens before the characters reach the top of the tower is some sort of setup for some revalation later that just might help out characters survive. Its suspenseful, its compelling, its well written, the visuals are fantastic, and its just fun to watch. The only minor complaint I have with the film is that when its revealed hunter was dead all along, the dialogue isn't the best. Its very good in the beginning of the scene but once hunter says "im down there" and the big reveal hits you, she continues to exposit rather than dissipating from the plot right then and there. The moment would've been much more effective had the reveal of what actually happened all along be visual past this point but instead we have the apparition of hunter say things along the lines of "you just couldn't handle the fact I really died" and "you didn't really think your scrawny a** could pull me up did you?" and it sours the moment a little because it feels very unnatural. Also its very clear this used to be an R rated film with the amount of times they say "freaking" instead of just using the F word but it had to be censored to get that pg13 rating. But these are the only complaints I have with the entire film and I dont think these are substantial enough for me to deduct a star from the score. Overall a fantastic movie, and unless you're a child or you'll vomit at the sight of heights or blood, id 100% reccomend you check this film out.
Gravity Falls (2012)
Very Good, But Overrated
I love gravity falls i really do, it had amazing animation, the comedy is great, the story is interesting (when it decides to exist), the main characters are all pretty enjoyable, and all the different scenarios the characters find themselves in are always engaging. Really enjoyable overall. But its not perfect.
The internet will have you beleive gravity falls is a masterclass of design with amazing mystery and storytelling and pacing with amazing characters and they'll say all this is true because Alex Hirsch wrote the story before actually making the show. And I agree this is commendable because writing a story as you go doesn't always work out. But the gravity falls story is lackluster. Its mysteries are interesting but the series doesn't handle them properly. To have a good mystery you need to set something up to build intrigue, hint at the mystery subtly as the show goes on, and then pay it off. But gravity falls will set something up, build intrigue, and then forget the mystery exists for like 10 episodes and sometimes a whole season just to suddenly pay it off at some point and you're just like "oh great I totally forgot that was even a thing but cool"
not to mention the horrible pacing. The story does exist but it only wants to exist 25% of the time. This is a short show, only 2 seasons, 40 episodes, to complete the entire story. And somehow they manage to put SO MUCH filler in this show. The first season has almost no plot to speak of, and when they actually get into the interesting stuff with season 2 they still cram filler episodes between important plot threads where it doesn't fit at all, just so dipper and his grunkle can play dungeons and dragons for a little bit.
Next id like to talk about the side characters. Theyre all somewhat enjoyable but theyre not characters theyre one note jokes that just hop around town doing nothing the whole show. Now this would be fine except for the fact that the impact of the finale hinges completely on you caring about these characters, and aside from the main 5 and maybe 1 or 2 others, I dont care about this town and its people. Since season 1 had barely any plot what they should have done is used some of those filler episodes to focus on all the side characters of the town, give each of the townsfolk one episode that just shows you who they are and makes you care about them. That way they feel like actual people, then the filler would be less offensive. Instead season 1 just has a bunch of episodes where the main cast goes around and does random stuff that doesn't effect anything, and for an episodic show that would be fine but for this short show built on its engaging plot its a problem.
Now there's 3 side characters i want to talk about specifically because they're absolutely horrible. First 2 are candy and grenda, mables friends that appear very often in the show. Theyre insufferable, they never made me laugh once, and even though they're in so many episodes they get no development whatsoever. Theres 2 episodes I can name where they try and develop these 2 characters but by the end of each whatever they were trying to do ultimately means nothing and they go back to being the same old characters again. Last is Gideon. The secondary antagonist to the show and the main antagonist for season 1. Hes egregious. Not as bad as candy and grenda but he's still really bad. His whole character is he's a little kid that everyone loves cuz he's cute, but he actually had a vendetta against Stan, so he does antagonistic things to steal his shack. Issue is I can never take him as a threat because the show never treats him as such. And even when he gets close to achieving his goal at a certain point I'm just left wondering why exactly I'm suddenly supposed to take this joke of a character seriously. And then after a certain point he basically dissappears from the show entirely leaving no impact, so he was essentially a plot device just so our main characters can get ahold of something important.
The last thing I'd like to talk about is the main villain Bill Cipher. He's a really enjoyable villain, he's only in 6 episodes of the show but I have no problem with that. Sometimes less is more, just like star vs the forces of evil. The main villain of that show is toffee and he's amazing, yet out of the 77 episodes of the show he only makes a physical appearance in 7. Bill is shown all over this show, his little hieroglyph is shown at the end of the theme song in every episode, and his mystery is the only mystery in this show that was handled well. The writers did something amazing with him by making him a very funny joke villain that is still a major threat. I tend to hate joke villains in shows because they're never actually threatening but Bill on the other hand is hilarious but scary at the same time. Its brilliant. Hes a very good villain but not "one of the best cartoon villains of all time" like some people will say. Going back to star vs the forces of evil for a second, I beleive toffee is a much better villain than Bill. Toffee had history, motives, and a major effect on the main characters through the entire show even well after his death. But Bill doesn't influence our main characters much at all until the finale. He shows up to mess with dipper and Mabel a few times before the ending but its always a one episode situation, the twins deal with him and he dissapears for a while, hardly ever even getting mentioned. And his motives/backstory is very unclear. He says he was from a 2D planet but wanted to break through to the third dimension or something, but he doesn't have much of a reason to do what he does. And don't get me wrong I love a good evil for the sake of evil all powerful God antagonist they can be really fun, but those types of villains are never revolutionary or leave a lasting impact because their characters are very shallow. Bill is just a generic evil deity that makes deals and wants nothing more than complete destruction of our world. So I dont understand why so many people think hes some revolutionary villain. Just because he has a fun personality doesn't mean he's an interesting villain in concept or execution. He's funny sure, enjoyable to watch sure, but he has nothing to him.
So overall I really do like gravity falls. If I didnt I wouldn't have given it 8 stars. Its a fun watch and I'd definitely reccomend it, but it has big issues with its narrative and I dont think for a second it deserves all the overwhelming praise it gets. Its a very good show, but its not revolutionary. Just because the story was planned out from the beginning doesn't make instantly amazing. Sometimes writing as you go can even have its benefits, so you can feel how the show works a little bit before fully committing to a single plot line. Maybe you see how your show is turning out and realize the story might work a little better if it goes in a slightly different direction than what you originally envisioned. Crafting a narrative is an art form and it doesnt always have to be crafted the same exact way. Let writers do what they want, if it works out great, if it doesn't thats a good learning experience for them. Go watch gravity falls if you want a fun comedy with a pretty interesting plot. But if you're big into storytelling like I am, I wouldn't expect something revolutionary in the narrative department, because that's not what gravity falls offers. It offers a compact story about a family trying to stop an all powerful being, thats way more focused on episodic adventures than the actual main storyline. Its a fun time.
Sonic Forces (2017)
An Extremely Over-Hated Masterpiece
I don't understand why this game gets all the hate it does. Many criticisms I've heard thrown towards this game is just flat out not true. "the writing is inconsistent and cant decide whether it wants to go for a comedic tone or a serious tone". Not true, almost every line said by any character in this game is meant to further the plot and the few jokes that are present here aren't even that offensive except for a few standout lines that made me cringe (don't count your chickens before you smash your eggs).
I will mostly be defending the story in this review because i feel that's what gets the most unwarranted hate, but the gameplay is still really fun, fast fluid, and even classic sonic controls really well I never had an issue with him while many other people say hes clunky and hard to platform with.
The story is great I have no idea why people are bothered by it aside from tails being more of a coward than he should've been. I feel like the story could've benefitted from a longer run time because some things come and go too fast, for example sonic "dies" after the first level and one cutscene later the resistance is already discovering he's alive. But besides pacing issues the story is written really well with everything it sets up being paid off later. Many people look at this story at an insanely surface level perspective and hate on it for that but when you actually take a minute to think deeper than just what the game shows you you will see so many good things about this games story
example 1: Everyone criticises infinites backstory by saying "oh shadow called him weak and thats why hes evil that's so stupid" but as I said before that's a very surface level look at it. When you think with more than half a brain cell you'll realize that when you've gained a reputation as "The Ultimate Mercenary" and you're defeated almost immediately in a confrontation with Shadow its totally understandable and even expected to have a massive mental breakdown over that. His huge ego was shattered in an instant making him want to become more powerful, offering himself to eggman to be the test subject for the phantom ruby, rebirthing himself as Infinite, and giving up his old self
example 2: another criticism with infinite is he was a big part of the story but after your final fight with him in stage 27 he disappears and is never seen again. Now when you look at that surface level it seems stupid but if you actually think, and pay attention to the cutscene, you would notice that infinite is flickering, with a red aura surrounding him, almost as if he was a phantom ruby creation rather than infinite himself. And when he beacons back to the fortress the real infinite was probably up there, and after his defeat eggman took the phantom ruby from him used it to create his new Death Egg Robot, kicking off the endgame.
My main point with this review is to explain that many people are biased against sonic forces because the trailers got them overhyped and when they got the game and saw what it is they were disappointed, so instead of appreciating the games story and all its complexities, they just hate on it and give baseless criticisms that lead to unfair judgement of a perfectly fine game
does this game have issues? Yes. Its too short, the levels should've been longer, the pacing should've been better, there's no chaos or shadow boss fights even though they both have their own antagonistic roles in the story, infinite no matter how much I love him is an underdeveloped character, there's pretty much nothing you earn from collecting all the star rings, bingo numbers, and moon tokens other than clothing for the rookie, and if you're not interested in stylizing your character then 100%ing the game would be of no interest to you, but despite all this the game delivers on fun gameplay, good writing, a great story, fun locations, alot of fan favorite characters (even if many of their actions are done off screen while you blast through levels), and an amazing soundtrack which is the one thing I'm glad everyone can agree is amazing.
If you read this whole review and haven't tried the game yet, I'd definitely recommend it, and if you don't like it, that's perfectly fine. We're all entitled to our own opinions, just dont say stuff about the game that's objectively wrong, because so many people love to do that nowadays, and not just with sonic, with all games.
Miss March (2009)
Literally in my top 5 favorite movies of all time
Its possible the death of Trevor Moore (R. I. P) made me enjoy this movie more out of respect for the dead, but I remember really liking it when I first saw it as well, so this movie has whitest kids u know written all over it, it's very raunchy and over the top, if you can't handle a quick sexist joke every so often you won't find much enjoyment out of this movie, but society's misinterpretation of dark humor is a whole other topic, and if you aren't familiar with Trevor moore or his work you probably won't enjoy this as much as one of his fans would. Its really funny, and as cliche as it is with the road trip trope its still very enjoyable. It has great characters like Tucker Cleigh and Horsedick.mpeg, and the premise is interesting even if its just a trip to playboy mansion. If you like raunchy comedies you'll like this movie. If you're sensitive to somewhat dark jokes, you won't enjoy this movie. The entire movie hinges on the concept of sex as well so if you're not into that you won't enjoy this movie. There are a few poop jokes in there but in my opinion they land because of how over the top it is. It doesnt feel like they didnt have an idea for a joke so they just added a poop joke, its a running gag that is unexpected and hilarious. And this is coming from someone who hates poop and fart jokes.
Harley Quinn (2019)
Amazing and Hilarious
This is such a great show. Its really funny, but it knows when to calm the humor to have an emotional moment. I've only finished the first season as of writing this but I love every episode of the show so far. The one complain I have keeping it from a 10 star review is alot of stuff is predictable. In one episode ivy dies, and in the beginning of the next they bury her. And it was painfully obvious the second I saw them put her in the ground that she was gonna come back to life, because she's a plant character. And there are plenty of other instances of a big reveal being totally predictable. The later episodes did have me wondering what was going to happen next though, with the exception of ivy's revival.
Impractical Jokers: The Movie (2020)
Amazing
I absolutely loved this movie. As a fan of the show I couldnt believe my ears when I heard they were making a movie. And now that its finally out I can finally say it was all I wanted and more. I watched this movie 3 times in the theaters with 3 different friends and they all thought it was great. It has 2 parts of the movie, the parts where they're being themselves in the hidden camera fashion, and then there's the scripted parts usually meant to set up or execute the story. I have to admit that these parts arent as good as the hidden camera parts but they dont deserve as much hate as everyone is giving them. I had some chuckles at the scripted parts especially at the ongoing joke about what murr does away from the guys. I liked the Paula Abdul story though I do have 2 complaints with the movie and these are the reasons I gave it a 9 instead of a 10. Since it's off of television they should be able to do more with it, and though you get to hear sal say the f word uncensored, the challenge following that part of the movie has the guys saying "pussy" and its censored. I understand they had to keep the pg13 rating but the beep really took me out of it. My second complaint is at the end when murr triggers Paula's memory and she starts approaching the guys and they run away from her they are building to this amazing execution, but immediatly after this climactic narration from Q, joe just gets on stage and says like one thing and suddenly all is forgiven. It's very anticlimactic. But I know the story isnt the most important part of the movie which is why I can forgive them for it. In conclusion, I loved this movie and if you can get a couple friends together to go see it, it's a blast
