Reviews
Day of the Woman (1978)
Why are we still discussing this film 25 years later ?
After viewing this film in the early 80's, I agreed 150% with the Siskel and Ebert review of it, which was that it was the poorest excuse for a film ever made. In retrospect, I have to think that it may have been the most subversive.
This film shows a brutal, horribly protracted rape. Everything else is secondary: the setting, the perpetrators, the revenge...everything. The rape scene is the only realistic thing about this film. And that's just the point.
This is a film made for people who view rape as an abstract concept. After seeing it, you will never do so again. If you feel like you need to take a shower after watching it, it's because you were paying attention.
Hollywood Mortuary (2000)
Funny and Original
Janos Blasko (Ron Ford) and Pratt Borokof (Tim Sullivan) are two feuding horror actors who take their battle beyond the grave in "Hollywood Mortuary". Aided by a psychotic, washed-up makeup-artist who dabbles in Brazillian Voodoo rituals on the side, the two deceased Terrors of Tinseltown are resurrected to wreak havoc on an unsuspecting populace. Ford and Sullivan just can't be beat here. The two have a very natural chemistry that really helps the volley of insults between them fly. As the makeup-artist gone bad, Randal Malone turns in an impressive performance. In truth, everything about this movie works. A lot of great one-liners are peppered throughout the script, as well as some really bad ones (delivered, ironically, by a stand-up comedian). Possibly the best low-budget horror-comedy ever made. Certainly the best I've seen.
As others have stressed, I will affirm: Go out of your way to find this movie. You will NOT be disappointed !
Camp Blood (2000)
A B-Movie classic !
Taken for what it is (micro-budget, videotaped, mindless entertainment), this movie actually rocks ! Compared to other films in the genre, this one is actually near the top of the heap. It manages to stay very entertaining most of the way through (though some of the fight scenes are a little on the long side), the acting actually isn't that bad (it's part of the fun of this film), and the editing was top-notch. Also, Jay (played by Tim Young) and Bromley Thatcher (played by Joe Hagerty) add some great comic touches. It's got it all: A slasher in a clown mask, obligatory nudity, laughs, no overly-disturbing subject matter, and no logic whatsoever. If you like to watch cheesy movies late at night with friends while drinking, you should check out this little gem.
Memento (2000)
If all movies were like this, I'd pay $50 to see them
Make no mistake, this is a stylistic noir masterpiece, the final word on reverse-narrative, and has a honey of an ending, to boot. No matter what you hear about this film, no one will tell you not to see it. This film is worth a long drive, and a second viewing. Impress your friends with your fine taste in cinema, and bring them with you. You'll want someone to talk to afterward, anyway.
It is a sad testament that this film is practically inaccessible, while a complete train wreck like "Freddie Got Fingered" can open at 1800 theaters.
Why are you still reading this ?
SEE IT, NOW, WHILE YOU STILL CAN. GO GO GO GO !!!
