The Last Airbender (2010)
It's not that bad, just don't have high expectations.
Before I say anything else..I want to state that this movie WAS NOT as bad as everyone was making it out to be. I'm going to give a breakdown of the film:
Plot: The basic plot was fine. It was pretty much the same as the cartoon show. 9/10
Characters: The characters in the movie all looked the part. The main problem was their acting. Noah Ringer(Aang)needs to be cut some slack, since this is his first film. I do think that the guy who played Commander Zhao needs to work on his acting though, as well as the actors who played Katara and Sokka. Both of their portrayals were limp and I think they could do much better. 6/10
Music: The score was excellent. 10/10
Writing: some of the dialog is cheesy..most of it is passable, but there isn't enough of it. This movie is heavy on the action, but not so heavy on the character interactions/development. The pace is also too fast, which is why I'm hoping the sequel gets a longer runtime(if it gets made). 7/10
Special Effects: The bending effects were great. The least realistic element was probably water, in terms of appearance. It still looked awesome though. Overall, the cgi was enjoyable and well done. 9/10
I believe this movie suffered from a short runtime. I think that M. Night wanted to include more material, but couldn't. While I think this movie could have been better, it certainly isn't the "worst movie ever" like all the comic book guy wannabes are saying. M. Night was good at capturing certain specific "moments" of the show, but not capturing the overall appeal that the show had. He tried though and I can tell he likes and respects the animated series. I hope that if a sequel is ever made to this, that M. Night will improve upon it.
final rating: 6/10.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Most. Belated. Review. Ever.
I hadn't seen this movie until..would you believe it?..LAST YEAR. Yes, I really was that late in seeing this movie. Freddy Krueger always seemed creepy to me and so I avoided the Elm street movies for years. I thought they'd scare me too much((I get scared really easily sometimes)). I found the VHS version of ANOES at a local bookstore and decided to buy it, along with "New Nightmare".
I was surprised to find that, not only did ANOES not scare me half to death, I actually enjoyed it! A Nightmare on Elm Street, while it may be a little dated in parts, is a work of art. It shows how so much can be done with so little. It's encouraging, since I've been thinking about getting into making movies myself.
Here's my breakdown of the film:
Plot: 9/10
Music: 8/10
Scare factor:2/10 ((For me at least, but that's okay. I didn't want to be scared poopless while watching this movie)).
Characters: 10/10 Wow. I know, right? But the actors and actresses are excellent in this movie. Heather Langenkamp is lovely and talented. She seems to be just your average teenager and isn't over the top. Did I mention she kicks butt?
Effects: 9/10. Surprisingly good effects considering the time in which the movie was made. As cool as cgi is now, I'm glad there isn't much of it in this movie. The movie seems more realistic and believable since only a little cgi is used.
That's about all I can think to comment on. Bye! And remember, every town has an Elm street..just a little something to think about >.>
If you haven't seen this movie yet and are worried it might frighten you, then let me give you a rundown of the ONLY things that would probably scare you.
************Spoilers ahoy!*************
1) There is a bloody scene towards the beginning of the movie where a girl is being attacked by Freddy in her sleep. Gashes are appearing on her skin and she is getting kind of thrown around the room. Much blood ensues. This is pretty much the only part that freaked me out when I saw the movie for the first time.
2) General Freddy sneaking moments. When Freddy is stalking people, you might get kind of nervous, but trust me, there aren't that many jump scares in this movie.
3) The blood fountain. This might gross you out, but probably not "scare" you exactly. It's towards the end of the movie, and if you want could always just fast forward it if it's too yucky to handle.
Aaand, I think that's about it for the scariest stuff. Hope whoever is reading this enjoyed my review :) Happy watching!
Toy Story 3 (2010)
A powerful and moving conclusion to the beloved Toy Story.
I've known and loved the Toy Story movies since the first one came out in 1995. I was just a little kid then and the first TS was one of my favorite movies growing up. The sequel was great too, but maybe not quite as classic as the first. Now, after SO many years..we get Toy Story 3.
Let me say that this movie..surprised me. From the previews I thought that the movie might be a little too "gag" heavy. The whole Spanish Buzz thing, combined with the Ken/Barbie stuff. I was a little skeptical. BUT I do know that Pixar rarely flubbs up on movies, so I went into the theater with pretty high expectations. I was quite impressed.
The story: For me, the story gets a 9/10. It was a very solid story and the plot moved along pretty well. There was one scene that seemed to drag a bit, but that's kind of nitpicking.
The humor: 8/10. I didn't laugh all /that/ much during the movie, but it did still have funny moments :)
Music: The music was fine. I was paying more attention to the story, not the music as much. I believe the music would also get a 9/10.
Emotional depth/quality: I do actually wish the movie had been a little more bold at certain points. I have to give Pixar props though for some of the scenes in the movie. This is the darkest Toy Story movie. If you thought that the climax of Toy Story 2 was intense..oh boy..you haven't seen nothing' yet! I'll give the emotional content a 9/10 as well.
Appropriate: This movie is for children, teens,adults..anybody. Anyone who has ever loved or lost a toy will like this movie. Some parts honestly creeped me out a bit..and I'm almost 20 yrs. old. Don't let that discourage you from taking your children to see the movie though. I would exercise a little caution if you're taking really young kids to the movie. If they scare really easily you might need to like..cover their eyes at a couple parts. 9/10.
Anyone who has seen and loved the first two Toy Story movies will enjoy this movie :) It was fun, intense, emotional..it had pretty much everything. I give the movie a final overall rating of 9/10.
Thank you Pixar, for influencing so many lives and allowing so many children to grow up with your characters.
So long, partner.

How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
+You won't regret seeing this one+ ^^
Wooh, well I just got back from seeing "How to Train Your Dragon" in theatres. I won't make this a very long review 'cause I don't want to bore you people to death with my blabberings.
Plot: Very decent. A nice detour from the usual "follow your heart/destiny/calling" sort of films. This time the plot is a little more heart-felt than that. It revolves around the relationship of the protagonist and his father.
Music: Honestly, I was too engrossed in the plot to pay much attention to the music..but from what I remember, it was excellent :) Cons: there were a few cliché's in the movie..but that's to be expected. The movie also did not have too many "hilarious" moments. A few laughs were had..but this is more of a drama than a comedy.
Overall impression: This movie was quite satisfying. After going to see "Alice in Wonderland" in theatres, I was a little skeptical of going to see this one. It surprised me though..it threw things at me that I wasn't expecting.
Recommended to: I would say..pretty much any kid is going to like this movie, unless they frighten really easily. Older kids and adults may have trouble connecting with this movie, but since I like children's movies, I liked it fine( I'm 19 yrs old).
This movie was funny, touching, suspenseful, and action packed. Go see it while it's still in theatres! I didn't go to it in 3D, but the regular seemed great even without the 3D. So, if you're on a tighter budget, don't bother with the 3D showing.
9 (2009)
"9" - The world needs more animated movies like this!
At seeing the trailer for Shane Acker's new movie "9" on the internet..I was astounded. One of the most awesome trailers I'd ever seen. I knew instantly that I wanted to see the movie. About a week after it came out, I went to go see it. It wasn't quite what I was expecting. I'll break it down for you guys: Plot: 9 creations are made by a scientist when the world is almost at its end. The scientist dies, and the creations are all that remains on the earth..except for roaming mechanical monstrosities that serve a mysterious master.
The plot was original. I don't care what anyone says. Yes, the post-apocalyptic theme has been done again and again, but never with little puppet-like protagonists. However, despite having a good concept, 9 has very quick pacing. So much so, that I was pretty surprised. There isn't very much build-up in the movie, mostly just hopping from scene to scene. Honestly though, this didn't bother or hinder the experience very much.
The score: The music is quite good. Definitely inspired by Tim Burton, since he's one of the producers. The main theme is done by Danny Elfman, so of course it's good:) The animation: AMAZING! Visually, very appealing movie. In certain parts of the movie, the animation get's pretty darn close to Pixar quality.
How does the movie make you feel?: 9 is a movie that tells of how people were too reliant on machines. It is also a movie about rebuilding. Like, what do you make out of a world that has nothing left in it? The theme definitely has a darker tone to it. Not really depressing, but just dark.
Recommend: I seriously don't know what audience to recommend this movie to. Adults and teens are the target audience. But, please carefully research this movie if you have kids that scare easily and are planning to take them.
Scare factor: There is a myriad of strange monsters in this movie. The main ones resemble a skeletal machine-like dog, a snake, and a flying bird with knives for a beak. When I lay it out like that..it doesn't sound very scary, but you need to seriously consider whether to show this movie to your kids or not. I actually don't think it would scare kids very much as long as they are at least 7 years old.
This movie has dead bodies, character death, some creepy monsters, dark and dank scenery..just use discretion:).
I've heard some people complaining about this movie. They say things like "it's too short!", "the characters and story are boring!!", "it's confusing!".
Too short this movie is not. It's one hour, nineteen minutes. Average movie length is hour and a half.
The characters are very simplistic and not much thought is given to developing their characters. However, you have to keep in mind that they are little burlap dolls. They have limited emotions. They don't act like people would because they aren't people.
As far as "boring" goes, this movie just about had my eyes glued to the screen. It just depends on what kind of person you are, and what interests you.
9 is a little on the confusing side..most notably at the end of the movie. It's one of those movies that is supposed to make you think, that is why not everything is spelled out.
9 was originally a short film by Shane Acker when he was still in college. The original "9" was only about 10 minutes long. If this is considered, you can see why the plot appears to be rushed in the new version of the movie. That's how it originally was, after all.
Overall: 9 is a movie with great computer graphics, good story, pleasant characters(almost refreshing with how simple they are), and some pretty cool action sequences. One of those particular scenes was practically genius. If your kid has a weird streak, they will probably enjoy this movie. Use discretion if your kids are really young or scare easily.
9 gets a decent 7/10 rating from me. Thanks for reading, and please go see the movie! The world needs more kick butt animated movies like this!
Baccano! (2007)
A lovely show!
I first watched this one on the funimation website. They were having this special thing where you could watch the first episode online for free! (was in Japanese tho', which was peculiar instead of the dub:0) Aaaaanyway, this show is addictive and quite enjoyable. I could tell you about THE main character..but there are MANY main characters. The show keeps hopping along from character to character, describing certain events from different perspectives(did that make any sense??). This series is rather confusing so far, but I'm hoping it'll make more sense once I watch more of it. I've only seen the first four eps. The series is set in the 1930s in the U.S., which is pretty different for those used to watching anime where the setting is almost always Japan. There's some slang from the 1930s too, weird to get used to(plus some characters have accents). The dub is exceptional btw. Japanese is pretty good as well. Recommend either one.
So far, I give this show a 9/10. The music is great(the theme is pretty much intrumental 1930s music.), the animation is great(much like the style from Blood Plus),the voice acting is very spot-on, and the story is great. This is a great show, but should be noted it is rated M for mature, so maybe not such a great idea to let your little 5 year old watch it..they might be a little traumatized from the blood in some scenes. So far, there hasn't been that much blood tho', so don't let that stop you from watching the show:) Hope you watch! The first DVD is out now and more are on the way^^
Coraline (2009)
Coraline: A decent movie in my opinion.
Well, on Monday my mom and I went to go see Henry Selick's newest movie "Coraline." I really wasn't exactly sure what to expect with this one.
First off, let me say a little about the music. The music in this movie is awesome and very well composed. Most Notably the music in the opening credits of the movie. Those who have seen "Nightmare Before Christmas" know that it has a bunch of songs in it. This movie has only two songs, both of which are intended to be ridiculous.
Next, the plot. The plot centers around a young girl named Coraline Jones. She discovers a door in her house that seemingly doesn't lead to anywhere. One night, she discovers that there is a tunnel that sometimes appears behind the door. She goes through the door and finds "the other world", a place where there are alternate or "better" versions of her neglectful mother and father. Night after night, Coraline visits this "other world". After a while, she finds the world is not what she thought it was at first. That is all I'm going to say. You'll have to watch the movie to find out the rest^^ Something I noticed about this film is the pacing. The pacing is very very slow. I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, but in some parts of the movie, you may feel a little bored.
The mood of this movie is quite dismal, but not depressing. You get a certain sense of dankness from the real world that Coraline lives in.
The animation in this movie reminds me of Henry Selick's other stop motion animation "The Nightmare Before Christmas". It's like we have gone back in time to more choppy animation. The style of the characters and the sometimes awkward way they move may bug some people.
I would recommend seeing this movie in theaters before seeing it anywhere else. I think I actually enjoyed the movie more because of the theater experience.
The short version: I recommend seeing this film. Because of the slow pace and the fact that this movie has some frightening images, I don't recommend bringing little children to see this. I don't advise bringing any child under the age of 10. Every kid is different, so your little 5 yr. old may love this movie to bits. Who knows:). This is seriously the Weirdest movie I have ever seen, so if you don't "do" weird movies, this one probably isn't for you. It is a bit morbid and very Gothic pretty much the whole way through.
I give this movie an 8/10 for the somewhat predictable storyline, but it has so many redeemable qualities that I still gave it a high rating. What are you waiting for? Go see Coraline already!
Bolt (2008)
Bolt is a movie that will surprise you!
I had low expectations when I went to this movie in theatres. I knew vaguely what the plot was: A dog thinks he has superpowers but really doesn't and gains new friends. Don't get me wrong, I was excited to see this movie, I just wasn't expecting it to be so good. Right off the bat, the movie draws you in with an adorable sequence of Bolt as a puppy meeting his future owner, Penny, for the first time. Right after this scene, the movie gets a much darker tone for a couple minutes as Penny and Bolt find out her father has been kidnapped. A long scene follows where Penny and Bolt are racing to the airport to save her father from the bad guys. After this part of the movie, we find out the none of this is real and Bolt is the canine hero of a popular TV show. We find out that Bolt has been led to believe that everything that happens in his TV show is real. Meaning, Bolt would have superpowers and be fighting against a notorious supervillian. Through certain circumstances, Bolt believes that Penny has been kidnapped by the TV show's main villain. It's all fake of course and his owner wasn't really in danger at all, but poor Bolt is led to believe otherwise. Bolt accidentally gets sent thousands of miles from his home and must find a way to get home and save his owner. Along the way, Bolt gains new friends in a witty stray cat and a lovable geeky hamster. In the movie, Bolt finds that his powers are not real. Despite realizing that everything he has believed is a lie, Bolt knows he has to make it back to his owner. I won't give away the ending of this movie, but let's just say it's very touching.
Bolt has amazing music and animation. In some scenes of the movie, you could swear your watching something in real life( for instance, the first scene that shows clouds). Disney knew precisely what they were doing when they made this movie. This movie shows that, while superpowers are awesome, they don't make a hero.
I have seen this movie twice in theaters so far. I would recommend at least seeing it once on the big screen. You may want to explain the movie a little bit to children, as certain things can be hard to grasp for little kids.
Overall, I give this movie 9/10 for amazing score, animation, and story.
Eagle Eye (2008)
Eagle Eye- so many people are being too hard on this film!
After reading through some reviews on this site, it looks like a lot of people are taking this movie much too seriously. I won't deny that the plot IS outrageous, but the fact is, it is perfectly fine for a movie to be unrealistic. The reason the two main protagonists keep escaping all these dangers(which would most likely be fatal for anyone in the real world) is because they are the likable MAIN CHARACTERS! For me, Eagle Eye was a movie that I was unsure I would enjoy. By the time the movie was over, however, I was glad that I had gone. The movie contains many elements that seem familiar(because they have been used in other movies), but that didn't really affect my movie-viewing experience.
Please do not let this movies' unrealistic elements destroy your enjoyment of it!( In my opinion, this movie was very convincing in a lot of parts).
Overall, a great movie to see at least once. Very good acting, great special effects, and a great way to spend two hours! 8/10 (Not to mention, Shia Lebouf isn't too hard on the eyes either!:)
