Homeless Ashes (2019)
Finely made film on the fundamental issues of living
Marc Zammit and his colleagues have made a stirring movie on the toughest of subjects. Homeless Ashes brings the viewer close to the characters and story: one becomes involved from the start as a young boy witnesses the torment of a violent father and then escapes home through fear, living on the streets as a refuge.
The streets become the scenery but assume almost human characteristics along with those that live their lives in such torrid conditions. This is ably shown through a good script, highly credible acting and firm direction of scenes that could tend to the mawkish but do not.
The range of issues covered is wide but the underlying theme - how people on the streets have lives that need fulfilling just as much as anyone - is well maintained.
At this time, when the Covid 19 pandemic is an existential issue for anyone on the streets (here or worldwide), this is a singular reminder of how our society often rewards misfortune - entirely without compassion. It is a film that rewards by the watching and deserves the maximum time on our TV screens, monitors and mobile phones that have replaced the movie theatre at this time. May it also help those it so well portrays.
