In the Earth (2021)
pretty good, disturbing horror film. not the usual stuff.
I liked this. It was disturbing, interesting, and suspenseful. Great use of sound and visuals. I like a wide range of horror, but usualy don't like ones critics do, like hereditary and the witch, both of which i thought were garbage and wastes of time. Also thought It was a silly waste of time. This was eerie, creepy, suspenseful and disturbing. Solid, but not great.
The Narrow Margin (1952)
One of the greats from the film noir genre, a must see.
Great film noir. Suspenseful and great dialogue from beginning to end. the two leads are terrific, and if you want to know what film noir is, this is as good a first introduction into the genre as any. Don't buy into the plot hole reviewers. Every movie has things one could retrospectively question if you give it enough thought, but the holes are largely in the eye of the beholder. One of the premises this is based on is that the bad guys don't know the appearance of the mobster's widow being protected. Not likely, but possible, and would actually be a smart move for a crime boss.
The Second Face (1950)
good film tackles ugly truths
i've seen quite a few negative reviews of this film, but i thought it was refreshingly direct and honest, and very well-acted. Ella raines is truly terrific in it. Each character has multi-layered motivations in their actions, and the progress of the story in engaging throughout. it does have a Douglas sirk feel to it, so perhaps you should judge whether you see that as a good thing or a bad thing. but i also think the film has a bit of a sam fuller feel to it. a film that it thoughtful and very direct in what its about. The main characters are well-developed and intelligent. I don't know why these reviews need to be ten lines, but i'll go along. i've written what I wanted to and wanted to promote this film, as it would be interesting to anyone who finds the theme of reacting to female facial attractiveness intriguing. to me, most contemporary films and TV shows act like this factor matters a lot less than it does (.e.g, girls).
Mistress America (2015)
Funny and Real
I thought this was a very good comedy, and very much in the spirit of Noah's other comedy oriented films; probably his funniest to date. Many funny lines. It carries insightful truths within it, but to me, reviewers who miss that this is a comedy, are missing the boat. But its a comedy that doesn't wait around for the viewer to catch up. In fact, I laughed more the second time I saw it because of the subtlety of the humor. The main characters have complexity, and the frosh college students actually act like college students. The central character, played beautifully by Greta Gerwig, captures a kind of person that very much exists in the world and is a very vibrant, paradoxical kind of person. She's a person you won't soon forget.
Stitchers (2015)
Great New Show!
This is my very favorite show on television (moving ahead of Homeland and Rectify). The first episode was a bit too frenetic and quipy but since then its developed a tremendous pace, with humor, intrigue, mystery, drama, you name it. Excellent characters, well-played. Very good self-contained stories and bigger arcs. The neuroscience is a bit of a stretch, but plausible for some future time. It is true that a clinically dead person can still have a brain that can be revived with memories intact, for as long as twelve hours. This is especially (or perhaps only) true if the brain is chilled, something they should add to the stitchers technology. If you liked Warehouse 13, you'll like this. Its less fun/silly but more intriguing.
