A love story that opens doors to understanding
7 August 2015
This is indeed an unconventional love story, so warm, funny and moving that the audience at the Saturday morning showing at the Traverse City Film Festival in August gave it a standing ovation. It reflects how rewarding the efforts that go into marriage, traditional or untraditional, and into understanding the differences among us can be. This is a documentary that presents a clear picture of what learning to understand those differences entails. As we left the theater, a gentleman I had never met before smiled at me and said, "I want to live in that world." Me too. Kudos to the film makers and the Shattuck family.

Taken (I) (2008)

The Grandma perspective
17 June 2009
Warning: Spoilers
My grandson, who is 12, and I watched TAKEN together. The special effects, action, and spy technology were fascinating--so much so that my grandson thinks he might like to go to military school to learn how it's done. The thread of tension held taut through the whole movie, leaving us feeling a little drained. My grandson turned to me and said, "Wow!!" when it ended. I concur.

TAKEN is pretty much a one-man show as Liam, with his always impeccable acting skills, carries it, though Xander Berkeley is good too, as far as his bit part allows him to be. Liam makes one hell of a tough guy. Watching this retired "preventer" come out of retirement before our eyes as he hears his daughter being kidnapped was the best scene and set us up for the tension and excitement that followed. It's a wild ride--you won't be disappointed and will want to see the film more than once.

Flip This House
8 August 2006
This show was my favorite when it featured the Trademark Properties Team. The show was the concept of Richard Davis of Trademark Properties, so it was appropriate that it feature his company. It showed houses in less than attractive condition being restored with a perfectionist's eye, using top skills and taste, to as good as or even better than when they were new in some cases. That made the show exciting and artistic and gave it real merit. The team was doing something good for the community in a number of ways, including these renovations. Then the station decided to use other teams for the second season, thinking they would be able to carry the program without Trademark Properties. The work done by the new teams is shoddy and unimaginative, the personalities of the team leaders are abrasive, and the motivation of the leaders is entirely self-serving, at the expense of other contractors that they deal with. It's a turn-off. I am turning it off and waiting for Trademark Properties to come back on TLC. Richard, Ginger, Dawn, Vance, John, Kevin, come baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!
