In the previous ep, I raved about Jean Smart's performance (particularly with her inebriated melt down at the dorm party). But I gotta admit - this one's star power goes to Hannah Einbinder. And she did an incredible job in her climactic scene, showing us an Ava who has finally (and applaudingly) gotten fed up.
I never understood Ava's unyielding loyalty to DV throughout the series...even stemming from the very second episode where Deborah left her stranded in the desert. To the average (and rational) Joe, that would've been a deal breaker right off the bat. And yet, through each season, Ava continues to maintain her "We belong together" stronghold while functioning as Deborah's meek whipping boy. Quite frankly, if it weren't for those tender loving moments uniting our two leads and reminding us why their chemistry is pure fire, I'd probably start to question Ava's sanity.
But in this final episode of the season, our dear, dear Ava has gotten tired. For once, the loveable young writer who was forced to relinquish jobs, a beloved girlfriend and even a spectacular trip to Iceland, has endured one rejection too many. Ava has finally begun to process the profundity of her sacrifices and connected them to an individual who was never willing to compensate. With vivid clarity, Ava painfully sees Deborah for what she truly is: a selfish, overly-ambitious and competitive woman whose career-based obsessions far outweigh the scruples of prioritizing friends or family. Deborah is basically about Deborah. And with a remarkable performance, Ava creates a seething confrontation with Deborah, reminding her that she is, and will always be, alone. It's a sad scene to watch - especially since it undercuts the happy embrace between the two from last week's episode. But that single tear that trickled down Jean Smart's cheek definitely brought it home. Ava Daniels is DONE.
Nonetheless, it's clear that Season 5 is going to offer us a newly transformed and no-nonsense protagonist. Hopefully one where Deborah's mousy, young and naive little protégé has blossomed into a shark. And all I gotta say is: FINALLY!!!
