Sherni (2021)
Realistic, hard hitting and a true reminder of the challenges of conservation!
This is not your average pop corn film. It's a slow burner, shot with such finesse that it's hard to not feel you're one of the forest rangers yourself. Sherni brings out the difficulties that field officers face on duty and the fallacies of government offices. It depicts how politicians make hay whichever way they want and the faulty system is their shield. Brings out so much about the tiger counting procedure ( hitherto not seen in Indian films) and the challenges of conservation in a poor country. There's nobody who is projected as a hero, which makes it even more believable. Well done Amit Masurkar. After Newton, this is a worthy follow up.
Mahapurush (1965)
Enjoyable movie peters out into drab finale
With the love for Babas and other holy men much in vogue amongst many Indians even today, it can be well understood that 50 years back the scenario was even worse. Before the age of internet, learned but wicked men could fool gullible people at will. Birinchi Baba plays his role perfectly and the movie moves on a light note. The hand rotation in reverse directions is wonderfully done. But the climax peters out in quite a drab manner. I'm nobody to criticize Ray's work, but probably it could have done with a bit more detailing!!
Gullak (2019)
Hidden Gem
TVF people, brilliant!!!! You have previously showed that you can make beautiful stories from day to day events. Coupled with wonderful acting and punchlines, Gullak had us laughing all the time. A family webseries for the ages!!
Coco (2017)
An other-worldly journey, a stellar show!
Coco is a visual spectacle, a story that pulls at the heartstrings and a ride to another world that is unthinkable otherwise!!
Would've rated this more than 10 if I could.Animation magic from Disney!!
Adda (2019)
Hotchpotch concept, dragging narrative
Started off with a promise but soon peters out into a drab bore-a-thon with long drawn conversations that lead to nothing. The film is not very clear in what it tries to tell. There's no pace in the story telling. Eventually, it makes for quite dull viewing. A very high rating of 7.8 on IMDB made me watch it on Prime but turns out, this was because only few people had rated it ( giving very High scores).
This would guide you wrongly. Wouldn't recommend this film.
Saand Ki Aankh (2019)
Fantastic film on the shooter grannies
The film goes a long way to show the patriarchal society of northern part of India and the grit of two 60+ females eager to make their mark on the shooting arena. The length could've been a bit reduced though...but great acting makes up for the little drag .
