Virupaksha (2023)

The hive mentality should be to watch this movie on a big screen!
1 May 2023
Plot : The story revolves around how a village is plagued by an evil spirit, villagers unites to follow a rigorous practice to fight against the evil. Things go south, and now mysterious deaths occur, and Nandini(Samyukta) being the latest victim. The rest of the story revolves around how th protagonist Surya(Sai Tej) fights against the evil to save the village.

The direction and Cinematography is top-notch. The only reason this movie works is because there is no over the top action or machoism. Glad that they didn't go with a mass-hero. Sai Tej does a good job and a convincing one, though the dialogue delivery is sometimes bit off but the strong script holds the story together.

Samyuktha looks elegant and has done justice to the role. It's refreshing to see female leads are given equal screen space and pivotal roles beyond the glam-glam.

The supporting cast, group of tried and tested actors, do their job to perfection. Ajay being a surprise element in the film, with short but profound performance.

The only duh-part of the film is a weak second half and a not-so-impressive climax. Yet the movie is worth to be watched on the big screen. Viewing on OTT might not be that enjoyable.

Overall the movie is entertaining, and the writer-director has nicely assessed the limitations of the cast and has crafted the story accordingly. My only issue with the film is that the first half raises the expectations so high, that a mediocre second half left me with not a Very satisfactory experience.

Verdict - A horror movie with very few jump-scare scenes, but should work with Indian audience. Dont wait for the OTT release, can be watched on big theater. Considering the barrage of mediocre movies that we are fed - this movie must be appreciated.

Rating - 7.5/10.

Twists! turns! on this flight journey, but you might not need a seatbelt
25 March 2023
Plot: Flight attendant, Yami Gautam, and her boyfriend, Sunny Kaushal, attempt a steal diamond whilst on a flight. What seemed like an easy job, gets complicated when the flight gets hijacked. Will they be able to stick to their plan? Is what the movie is all about.

This is a very fresh attempt and an original story that you rarely see these days in Hindi movie industry. Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga stays true to its storyline, a focused storytelling. The guy tries to woo the girl, they fall in love, there's a romantic song, they decide to marry and start a family, all this is taken care in the first 10minutes, and the story takes off as soon as the flight takes off on screen. Audience is hooked to the story as things are revealed in patches. In way they are entertaining, as there is hardly any dull moments for the viewers.

Good things: 1. Focused stroytelling - no BS! Or over-the-top action scenes or dialogues.

2. Original story (even if it's lifted the makers have done a good job) 3. Believable characters, Yami and Sunny have delivered exactly what the script demanded.

4. Will keep the viewers hooked.

5. You won't feel you have wasted your 2hours watching the movie.

Could have been different: 1. The way twists were presented seemed a bit plain. These were great twists, but could have been presented in a more dramatised way (dare I say it but an The Usual suspect'esqu ending would have made this movie a gem!)

2. An adrenaline pumping background scores during the movie would have been nice imho. (Something in recent time, Monica o'my darling had) such bgm kind of gives the viewers om-the-edge vibes!!

Conclusion:

The movie is good, could have been awesome but it's still is enjoyable. The movie unit deserve the appreciation for sticking to the storyline and not adding any unnecessary character development or melodrama. Viewers get what they expect after watching the trailer!

Considering the kind of unoriginal, masala flicks we are celebrating, this movie I hope stands out and the sequel (if it happens) becomes even better.

The movie is a 7.2, definately not 8.0 as the current rating is as of today.

The movie night not have that Wow factor, but it's still a well-made movie.

Comedy of errors that's not
28 December 2022
  • Good Cast: Check
  • Bright colourful set: Check
  • Goofy characters: Check
  • Punchlines - ummmm
  • Likeable characters: ummmm
  • Catchy songs: ummm
  • Climax: ummmm

Imagine this - you've had a hectic week, and Saturday you wake up late and crave for a sumptuous meal. You go to your favourite restaurant that you've known for years and they serve you a bland dish.

This pretty much sums up the movie experience for me. This is bad to a level that this movie wouldn't have worked even in 2007-08 time.

Plot: Two set of twins are deliberately seperated by Murli Sharma as part of a social experiment. The twins grow up in different cities, but happen to be at the same city and choas ensures.

This is an offical adaptation of Shakespeare's famous play - Comedy of Errors. Something that has been tried couple of times in our movies.

Good parts:
  • It's commendable that Rohit Shetty has managed to bring many industry veterans in the film. Such a cast surely excites the audience.

  • Sidharth Jadav finally gets a good screentime and he has done justice to the role. Probably the only one who is liked in the movie.

  • The intention of making a film that can be enjoyed with family. Colourful set and goofy scenes. Good intentions but bad outcome.

  • Good attempt to make a slapstick kind of comedy. Appreciate the attempt, not the outcome

Bad parts:
  • Varun Sharma doing the roles over and over. Sad that he wae heavily under utilised. Same with Sanjay Mishra, crowd is probably bored with the same type of character he pulls off in every third movie.

  • Bad dialogues and lack of comedic scenes.

  • Jhonny Lever's short span in the movie was dull, considering the calibre he has.

  • Female characters having little screentime. They were just for the songs and few scenes here and there.

Rohit Shetty misses this one by a mile; there are no funny one-liners or memorable moments in the film. The dialogue delivery by Ranveer felt very boring. For me the problem with the film is the lack of any interesting event, it just felt like one long dull montage. Considering Rohit Shetty's past film, the crowd would expect some fun scenes. The movie at best would be appreciated by the age group of 5-10 year olds. Definately not a movie that family would like to go on a Christmas time. The trailer, however, was quite evident of the fate of the movie. Maybe the box office numbers would be fudged, but the fact would remain that the movie was a big disappointment.

With a dearth of good wholesome comedy movies in our industry, such films will serve lesson to our filmmakers that there is no sureshot formula and good script is the real crowd puller not big names.

Hoping for some better films in future from Rohit Shetty, the guy is a gem and this film will enable(hopefully) him to make better ones in future.

Seemed like an opportunity lost!
24 September 2022
If you are expecting a taut thriller, then you will be disappointed. The film neither gives you 'edge-of-the-seat' vibes nor is a 'cat-and-mouse' one.

Plot is something fresh, there's a new serial killer who brutally murders film critic who aren't true to their work. Sunny Deol is the officer assigned to nab the killer, Shreya is a passionate writer who aspires to be a film critic, and Dulquer is a florist who likes Shreya. The story revolves around how the love blossoms at the backdrop of these gruesome murders.

The movie had a very good premise, but missed the trick. With a fresh concept it very well could have been an engaging who-dunnit with a shorter run-time.

Movie is a drama at best, nothing to take away from the writer/director, the performance by lead cast is top notch and they have given an honest attempt in times when big production houses are just repackaging formulas to mint money and not a narrate story!

The issue is what you expect out of the film by watching the trailer. If you know R. Balki's craft and expect what he does best - then you won't be disappointed. The film at the start would make you hooked to the screen, and then comes different characters and their development which derails. The days of "yeh fevicol ka jod hain" ads are gone, and So are those tighter screenplays which make your full bladder wait for the interval!

I personally would've appreciated if Sunny Deol would have atleast Screamed at the killer with a CHUPPPP!! - my gloomy face deserved atleast one smile during the entire.

Overall a good artistic movie, which is not a homage to Guru Dutt and neither is an gripping tale.

Sanak (2021)
7/10
Not something that you haven't seen before, yet a decent watch.
15 October 2021
SANAK isn't bad and it is not very good either.

The story is set inside an hospital that's under siege by a group of skilled mercenaries led by Chandan Roy sanyal. The protagonist Vivan's (Vidyut) wife is amongst the hostages. How Vivan uses his combat skills to fight out the bad guys is what SANAK is all about.

. The camera work and action scenes are too good. It would be great to see Vidyut do a John Wick' Hindi adaptation. He takes his "action star" tag too seriously.

Chandan did his best with the dialogues he got, but wasnt very intimidating. The movie offers few comic relief scenes meant specifically for big screen. (Too bad this movie got an OTT release)

The gaps in the movie: 1. Too predictable, a few twists wouldn't have hurt the plot.

2. Few clichéd scenes didn't add any value imo.

An average movie with a strong cast
1 October 2021
The movie had the potential, had bit more expectations considering the cast. The movie gives you glimpse of a good film, but the screenplay isn't well stitched.

Overall, it is a very average movie.

A good attempt considering they way it was shot/executed
7 October 2020
First up, the first season was quite good and hilarious. Coming to this 'Quarantine edition' - the show shows the patel family as they cope up with COVID situation. This 5 part mini-series individually covers a part of each character and how they are dealing with the pandemic.. Kalpesh (Ranvir) tries to pick new hobbies like cooking, singing. Payal (purbi) thinks of avenues to expand their business Kanan (Omi) suspects he has COVID and self-isolates himselves.

This series essentially talks about how they are dealing with the pandemic.

Full points for they way all stars shot it from their home and all the pieces were stitched together to create small 5 minutes mini-episodes. Due to the short duration, I felt I couldn't relish them, 2 episodes of 20 minutes each would have been fine. Maybe due to production limitations the decision of mini-episodes were taken - to me this didn't quite much sense.

Everything else is good - my only complain would remain with the length of episodes and the limited scope of humor to be included in this duration.

Thanks

The Gone Game (2020–2022)
8/10
An honest Attempt - Full marks for the vision & experiement
21 August 2020
This is a very good mini-series.considering the fact that it was conceived and shot during this 2020 pandemic,

The story is about Sahil, who recently returns from Bangkok, starts developing COVID symptoms. He goes to a hospital and eventually dies. Family is informed about his cremation. Things take a mysterious turn when Sahil's sister recieves a call from his cell phone 2 days after his death. Locked inside their houses, the family members try to solve the puzzle - Is Sahil dead? Or is he alive?

This 4 episode series stays very much focused, without any distractions. Quick introduction to each characters, and the story never derails. The cast is experienced and have done justice to their part. The music is apt and complements the story-line as it progresses.

I wished this was a feature film, yet considering the present lockdown situation I believe makes it special. I would recommend to watch this series at one go.

May the writers get more praise and attention, this is an impressive step forward for a new-India - a content driven India!!

Note - This might give you a feel of a 2017 movie by the name Searching
