Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
THIS IS WHAT A LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION SHOULD LOOK LIKE!
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) 9.5/10
The fact that the news and rumors of this series have been dragged all the way from 2018 makes me give kudos to everyone that has had one or two contributions to the success of the project. What a way to tell a story! What a way to let fans feel that the project is worth the wait! What a way to bring animation to life!
ATLA excels in every aspect you can think of - the cast, the crew, the designs, the breath-taking realistic bending of the four elements, the tone, the pacing, the balance of the humor and tragedy, the faithfulness to the source material (even though some storylines were added for the sake of those that didn't watch the animated series), the soundtrack! Everything was just nostalgic... Kudos to the person/people that worked on the soundtrack, they knew the assignment and they delivered!
Aang's playfulness, Uncle Iroh's obsession with teas, Zuko's obsession with catching the Avatar and fulfilling his destiny, Katara's kindness, Sokka's sarcastic and comedic character were well portrayed. The Firebenders' ruthlessness, the Earthbenders' ruggedity, the Waterbenders' lukewarmness and the Airbenders' peaceful nature perfectly represented. They even pronounced "Aang" perfectly here... Lol.
We all know that M. Night Shyamalan's 2010 live-action adaptation of ATLA was so easy to forget, but this Netflix's adaptation just further sends it into oblivion! If you haven't watched the animated version of ATLA, I'd really suggest you do, because I can't imagine myself trying to enjoy and bask in the satisfaction this masterpiece gives without watching the animated version.
I can't wait for subsequent episodes and I really hope Netflix keeps to this quality or even get better with the coming episodes! Wow! 😳
Ballerina (2023)
Great Action Sequences, Poor Story
While the story of this movie is somewhat confusing and boring with very slow pacing, the breathtaking action sequences covered for those lapses.
This is what a proper action movie should look like. The way she "off-ed" the boss without unnecessary long conversation is what added 3.0 to my rating. Some other movie would let the antagonist talk and talk when the protagonist is with a gun. Won't you just shoot the hell outta the guy and get it over with?
The action scenes were neatly shot and delivered 💯. Awesome cinematography and an okay musical score.
I guess the action is the only thing the movie can boast of... Pretty entertaining.
Gen V (2023)
Same Energy as The Boys, Can't Get Enough of It!
So far so good, this is my best series of 2023! It is nothing short of expectations and lived up to the hype. Gen V is a spinoff series that is set in the world of The Boys (2019), but in an academic environment with new, younger characters introduced. The first three episodes have been phenomenal and the series still carries the same energy from the principal series, The Boys, leaving nothing behind - especially the gore! I love the kind of "we can do anything with this series" energy The Boys universe is giving out, lol... Literally anything you can imagine can happen!
The writers are definitely doing a great job with the series as each new episode gets better than the last, the character development is on point and the story is not rushed. I hope the series keeps this energy or get better as new episodes are released!
Also the actors are well cast, their acting is on point and their characters are natural, not forced as we see in some flicks. This should be getting a 10/10 in my books, but I can't find a page in the book, so 9.5/10 will do.
It's a definite recommend from me.
57 Seconds (2023)
Could have done better
While 57 Seconds had its fun moments, some cliche ideas let the movie down. It is not the best movie out there, but it is entertaining in it's own way and had the potential to have been better than what was released. Morgan Freeman is still a great actor that can make a bad movie look good with his topnotch acting. Josh Hutcherson did a great job too and I'll definitely love to see him in big budget movies. Nonetheless, 57 Seconds is a movie that contains a good dose of entertainment, a few laughing moment here and there and some solid acting. The story should have just been able to give us more.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Super!
James Gunn really did a great job with the movie! The Suicide Squad is a big step up from its 2016 predecessor! The casting was great, CGI was on point! Damn! The movie's just super! I'd rate it 10/10 anytime!
