Barbie (2023)
a love letter to women, girlhood and growing up outside of a world run by the patriarchy
To me, Barbie was a wonderful exploration of feminity and womanhood while also encompassing themes of patriarchy and the entitlement of men. I wasn't really sure what to expect beforehand but i was truly enjoying it and smiling nearly the whole time. It pains me, how all women and girls will be able to relate to some of the scenes and it angers me so much how men seeing this movie just hate it for the sake of hating something pink and fun.
Men aside, i do think it healed something in me, however cliché it sounds and i will gladly rewatch it (would definitely show it to my future daughter, if i planned to have one). I think it's an incredible celebration of femininity and i think women deserve to enjoy every second of it without having to worry about anything or anyone else <3.
Turning Point: 9/11 and the War on Terror (2021)
The phrase "The War on Terror," was an enormously compelling summons to battle, but it was enormously miselading.
Provides an interesting re-examination of the events happening after 9/11. It was specifically fascinating to see the number od different personalities from different sectors being interviewed, not only from the US but also from Afghanistan or Pakistan. I do feel like it could have been more fleshed out in some parts, like Osama bin Laden's initial rise to power and the causes for his attacks on the US or the part about the Iraq War, as I felt that was quite shallow and just briefly mentioned without any connection to the previous or continuing story. I do however appreciate, the unbiased look into the events and specifically showing relevant people criticising what many believed was justified at the time. At the end there can be no doubt, that the US and its failures have greatly influenced the situation in Afghanistan and the Middle East today.
Heartstopper (2022)
screaming crying
It's so fricking good to see positive representation of lgbtq relationships that i cried like ten times. Also nick'a journey with bisexuality was so well explained and just overall chefs kiss we love when bisexuality is presented correctly.
Stranger Things (2016)
rip alexei you would have loved living the american dream
Season 1 and 2 are undoubtedly one of the greatest sci-fi media that is out there, but season 3 man i just couldn't wait for it to be done (still watched for season 4), the whole russians plot was just soooo out of the blue and didn't make much sense to me also please don't show me fricking kids kissing next season, yeah and the next thing - they really love putting joyce through all kinds of trauma don't they lmao.
Yuri!!! On Ice (2016)
very nice. also like gay
I loved loved loved the animation so much like animating multiple figure skating championships and every single fricking person? Incredible amazing spectacular i am a bit biased tho cause if you put anything with the words "figure skating" on it i'd love it. Still amazing and ummmm about that ending "see you next level" when is that hmmmm.
The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun (2021)
very enjoyable until the very end!
So this was my first wes anderson film and i gotta say i enjoyed it very much, the visuals and the story overall all very interesting and well done and the ending scene was just so heartwarming <3 so yeah nice movie i'm definitely planning on rewatching sometime.
Eternals (2021)
chloé zhao marry me
This is a very chaotic review so prepare:
I had high expectations of this mostly because of chloé zhao and the trailer which showed simply the most stunning visuals a marvel movie has ever shown and to be honest i was genuinely blown away. The visuals obviously are stunning and so well done but the story as well is nicely thought out and interesting and the movie definitely kept me on the edge of my seat and surprised me. I also have to emphasize the connection to the general history the story depicts which is just so interesting to see. I literally only have good things to say so i might be biased but this in my opinion is so worth it folks and i genuinely enjoyed it from the first minute to the end. Keep in mind however that this obviously is quite different from most mcu films so if you go into this expecting you know blockbuster superhero stuff well you probably won't get that.
Angmapansa (2021)
poetic cinema
Has the greatest fricking soundtrack i've ever heard in a tv show + the visuals and lighting and just the overall aesthetic are just absolutely stunning.
Gwimul (2021)
i am emotionally wrecked
I've seen so many tv shows about crime i can't even count them but this one however like how am i supposed to recover from this? This just threw me into the washing machine of feelings or smth and now im out and wtf am i supposed to do.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
marvel im gonna break ur kneecaps for calling this movie an "experiment"
Talented brilliant incredible amazing show stopping spectacular.
Fear Street: 1666 (2021)
finally a movie where lesbians survive (cause bury your gays is a real thing)
This part was actually my favorite out of the whole trilogy, i loved the whole like past sequence and how it explained everything, the ending was immaculate and i honestly was not expecting the evil goode plot twist so yea that was pretty cool + the soundtrack in the "past sequence"? Incredible.
Black Widow (2021)
i liked the absence of men <3 no but literally every marvel movie is frocking focused on men frick that
Couldn't care less about the bad ratings, as a marvel fan i enjoyed it a lot and imo it was a very nice ending to natasha's story, also florence pugh was amazing.
Luca (2021)
made me want to eat pasta, problem is i can't cook good pasta
Loved it <3 beautiful animation, nice emotional story (and yea i definitely do think it's about coming out actually- i mean did u hear the "some people, they'll never accept them but some will" like like woah) and great characters, so don't know what else to say im definitely gonna rewatch it when i get the chance.
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
why do cowboys gotta talk like that
Like literally tell me what is "what i don't know, all them things that i don't know could get you killed if I come to know them" supposed to mean like i just have no idea.
Young Royals (2021)
i wrote a nice long review and then deleted it so let's try this again
IF SEASON 2 (netflix don't u dare cancel this one) DOESNT SHOW WILHELM BRING DOWN THE MONARCHY AND ALL ITS STUPID OLD OPINIONS AND TRADITIONS + development of the relationship between felicie and sara because there's so much potential there (maybe even romantic *wink wink* netflix)
anyways as a part of the lgbtq+ community: worth watching THE GAYS KEEP WINNING (maybe not in the end tho ha maybe in season 2 huh netflix)
Dead Poets Society (1989)
not funny, cried (also it's definitely gay)
I wanted to not like this film just because of how overrated i thought it was and the excessive amount of men in it. However! I absolutely did freaking cry like a child during the last 30 minutes.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
women-
I've never read the books so i can't speak on accuracy, however the women in this <3.
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (2019)
i rated this high because the movie deserves it and i don't care
I don't care how many flaws this movie has according to someone who is a "movie person". It shows the struggle of coming to terms with your sexuality in a small town. I don't know what to say now, i cried while watching it and it's surely one of the better lqbtq representation movies so yeah.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
i just think it's neat
That's all i wanted to say (is what i would say i'd there wasn't a minimal numbers of words ha)
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
a masterpiece
I literally have no words, an outstanding performance from Anna Taylor-Joy, who made Beth's story feel so real and personal that i cried when she finally beat Borgov. amazing
It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010)
if "i'm depressed. just don't be!" was a film this would be it
See i'm not an expert or anything but i don't think this film actually understands how mental illness works. the main character who apparently had depression calls people with other mental illnesses "freaks" and could be basically described as ableist. other than that 2 of the female characters serve only as the main character's love interests and 2 other are only relevant to the main character's development. so yeah there's that 4 star rating
Enola Holmes (2020)
GUESS WHAT? it's actually good
Honestly i am not a big fan of millie bobby brown but this role suits her very well (also props to the casting directors because a 16 year old was finally casted for the role of a 16 year old). the story focuses mostly on enola with a little bit of romance, which is actually quite well done (none of the love at first sight stuff and also! enola doesn't really pursue the romance at the end (or so i think), which honestly good for her, the romance doesn't really feel pushed). the one thing i actually wish the film would have done honestly, would be to concentrate on the feminism theme a bit more. we get a lot of clues during the whole film but at the end we honestly get nothing much, which is a bit disappointing.
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Pretty average
Murder on the Orient Express is pretty disappointing and average. I knew who the murderer was after like the first 30 minutes. The scenes and sceneries were very average and i didnt really see anything new. Also the music was very bland and repetitive and once again - nothing new. I rated it 5/10 but I would say it's more like 4.5 or even a 4. in conclusion: there is basically no reason for you to watch it if you like good (quality) movies.
