Wonka (2023)
This is the proper sequal to the original...
This was the musical that needed to follow Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The version with Johnny Depp did not fill that gap, it was a different story. I will enjoy watching this over and over. We seem to have a problem with those who do not like to see a happy story. That is truly a shame, as this is fantastic. People, go see this any way you can, it is worth it in any form. I really wish I had seen it in the theater, it would be worth it and more. I am beginning to see that Timothee Chalatmet is an actor par excellence. I am more interested in his future movies than I was before. Young man, you have a great future ahead of you.
What If...?: What If... Strange Supreme Intervened? (2023)
A great finish to this season!
As this episode began to unfold, I was wondering all along why Loki did not show up, and now I see why. The great tree showing at the end tells us that we don't just have multiple universes, but they are pan-dimensional as well, so the Watcher also inhabits the place where Loki now sits. I hope that next season shows us the trip Captain Carter took with the Watcher, it must be a fantastic story. They might even figure out a way for Loki to leave his great purpose and live a life with others again. He should get a happy ending someday. This series just keeps getting better, Marvel don't screw it up now. If only you had [put as much effort into the last few movies you have released. Those of us who are fans are always looking deeper into the stories than you seem to know.
Werewolf by Night (2022)
A great break from the MCU as we know it
I've not watched werewolf movies for a long time, as they changed from the classic styles. This takes us back to the classics and it was a fun ride. Having Man-thing added was just a bonus. Hopefully they will do his story next year for Halloween. We will also want to see how the story of. Elsa Bloodstone will come to pass. This may be just a one-off story, but they did set it up in the MCU reality, so something can come of it at any time later. She may end up helping Moon Knight or the Black Knight at some point later on. The possibilities are endless. After so many love stories about monsters, it was good to see it get back to basics, yet in Marvel style it opens so many possible new directions it can take. I gave this a ten, not for any one item, but because they brought back something I thought we would not see again.
The Flash: Death Falls (2022)
Super Spoiler Alert: Sad to see a hero go, especially like that...
After a season that I thought was dragging, The Flash has finally hit its stride again. It was a very poignant to see Frost examining who she really was and why she ever came into being. From those first scenes I had a creeping feeling of how this would end, but I stayed to see how they played it out. I think I also see a way for her to come back, and that was by the very connected grief that Caitlin had for her. That cry seemed to sound across the ages, and that could be powerful enough to do anything in The Flash world. If Danielle Panabaker was tired of 2 roles, I understand. But I do hope we get to see Frost again someday soon. She is a big part of team Flash.
Superman & Lois: Truth and Consequences (2022)
Best Episode Yet
This is the way you change the obvious flaw in the canon of Superman, his secret identity. This opens up the story line in so many ways now, both to the better, yet much more complicated at the same time. Once the family secret is out to anyone, it eventually becomes public knowledge. And I expect we see that Jordan telling Sarah won't just make it all good, the relationship didn't change, and he was keeping big secrets from her.
Don't Look Up (2021)
A perfect parody of politics today combined with the worst case scenario.
I know that some are going to see the political viewpoint and dismiss this movie. Too bad for them, they are missing the point. It asks the big question, what if one of our doomsday scenarios does come to pass, how will we handle the truth. Dark comedy is hard to understand, and the funny parts make you uncomfortable, but that's exactly what dark comedy is supposed to do at its best. This will one day be categorized right next to Dr. Strangelove, which also was dark comedy and made a profound political statement.
Batwoman: Fair Skin, Blue Eyes (2021)
The show is fianlly getting back on its' feet
We can now feel we know this Batwoman. The series will need to keep up this pace and be very inclusive to the race issues in the world today, and this episode was an excellent way to start that process. They are even managing to keep Alice and Jacob Kane in the story in a sensible way. I know Ruby Rose won't be back, her body can't take more injuries. But I hope that her character does manage to come back, maybe in a wheelchair to keep this Batwoman going, and maybe to kelp the new one in some cases.
Batwoman: What Happened to Kate Kane? (2021)
Under the circumstances, what could be expected?
So first, let's admit to the pitfalls they had to work out. the actress who played Kate Kane/Batwoman was no longer able to play the part. They chose to give the suit to another rather than try to pull off a Bewitched/Darrin replacement.
I also see they used the Green Lantern origin as a model, as Ryan sees the crash and finds the suit. The new batwoman story also has many parallels with Batman Beyond. If they green light that series, they should definitely do crossovers.
It will still be interesting to see what happens with Alice and Jacob now, but they will need to phase them out quickly. This series is not going to follow the comics series very close from now on. But the world where this exists is flexible and will handle the changes.
I gave this only 6 of 10 for now, I think it could have been better scripted. But with the pandemic going on I'm sure this is pretty much all we could expect for now.
I still will watch, as I need to know if the kryptonite wound is just a bad thing that needs cured fast, or if it will bring on some powers ala Spiderman. Will Batwoman be bulletproof and see in the dark? If they go there it would be wrong, the Bat family must always just be humans, fighting against inhuman things.
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)
The best finale Chadwickj could ever expect...
Not sure if this will make the academy awards, but it should. Chadwick Boseman drained his soul into this part and you can truly see that. Viola Davis was also magnificent, but due to Chad's performance in his final roll, how well she also performed will never be fully appreciated. I loved every minute of the movie.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 12: The Siege (2020)
Amazing X3000
Not much I can say without spoiler, and you don't want any spoilers this time. All I can say is G** D*** That was a fantastic battle scene! And with that final scene, this story just got a whole lot more interesting.
Star Trek: Discovery: Scavengers (2020)
Tired of fanboys trashing this show
I had to catch up with this series in a binge watch this year. I have found the stories entertaining and well thought out. This episode is no different. Some want to complain now that they are wasting time when they have a whole new time to explore. What it seems to come down to each week is people complaining that it is not like the old Star Trek they knew. Well thank God for that, we already have several series, and while they have all been different, it has always been this argument, it's not what I'm used to. Embrace the difference. Let them take time exploring this new time, they are trying to build up to have many more seasons. Enjoy the new, the different, and the story lines that are not like what you've seen before. This isn't TOS, THG, DS9, Voyager, or Enterprise. Let them add to this universe as they wish, and do not hobble them with memories of the past. Open your mind.
