Tamara (2005)
Hot Lead, low expectation
I went into this film not expecting much and I got a lot less. I get the whole hot girl thing and the basic plot but this film was just over the top formulaic and typical. Nothing originally about this film and that is why I didn't enjoy it. I wanted to like it, knowing it would be brainless, but the more it played the more disappointed I became and the more I realize I like horror films that have a unique story. Sadly this did not. Everything about it was typical, as if someone just took bits and pieces of other generic horror films and threw it in here with no regard to respect for the viewer.
I can't recommend this film because of the sophomoric way it was told.
The Luring (2019)
Not your typical horror
I absolutely love this film. I loved how Jenifer is a crazy, dominating seductress while Claire is more submissive but shows her strength at times. Garrett is complex with good and bad elements to his character that gave him an interesting intricacy which was fun to watch. When the film ends, I felt everyone got what they deserved but not in a predictable way at all.
I'm a big fan of movies that aren't afraid to get a little weird and believe me this film does. But in a really fun way.
I felt there was a lot of symbolism and foreshadowing within The Luring so it's not the kind of film you can not pay attention to. Things are said or shown that come full circle later on so it's like a puzzle with little pieces.
I really enjoyed how the film dealt with the back story of the balloon and the truck, I thought that was very clever. It kept me engaged and I was trying to guess the meaning. I think they told a better story than what I was guessing.
The Luring is not your normal horror film and the director was sure to make that point and I applaud Wells for that. I like directors who aren't making what everyone else is making. I've seen those films, I'm ready for more films like this. I think there are going to be a lot of people like me enjoying watching The Luring because of the fact that it's so different and the style in which he directed it is just cool to watch.
I recommend it. It's different. So if you're looking for cookie cutter film-making you may not like The Luring, but if you're into indie films that try to do something different without alienating a broader audience, and yet at the same time really tell a story that hard core horror fans will appreciate you'll enjoy it.
Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)
An instant classic
Robin Williams has such range and had this unique ability to make the audience fall in love with him. Not too many actors have that range and not too many movies can entertain such a wide range of audience.
The story fallows Robin Williams character who loses custody of his 2 adorable children. This breaks his heart as well as the viewers and so he creates a character Mrs. Doubtfire who becomes their nanny. The story is pretty basic but it's what happens withing the script, the interactions scenes that create the story that makes this movie so much fun to watch.
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Great movie even today
A lot of movies I loved when I was a kid don't stand up today but with E.T. it does. The story is is just magical and a lot of fun to watch. It's a moving story that pulls at the heart strings and it's funny at times, suitable for any child ad a instant classic.
It's also a lot of fun to watch a young Drew as she shines. I recommend E.T. for anyone at any age and if you're watching it again you wont be disappointed.
Sinister (2012)
Not what I expected
I thought the demons face was scary and the 8MM deaths were creepy but felt the backstory was sophomoric as well as some of the "scares." I'm a big fan of Ethan Hawk and usually like what he does but I felt his character was vapid and didn't really give a performance I'm accustomed to seeing.
The older cop did a good job but the younger cop didn't seem like a cop, rather an actor playing a cop but forgot to act cop-like of that makes any sense.
My biggest problem with this film was it was very dark as in no one in the movie ever thought to turn on the lights, even when most people would.
The demon could have been used in a better way rather than give him a typical background story and make these kids do all the dirty work which all of them looking from all the other typical scary kids from so many other Hollywood horror films- nothing unique here.
