Project Ithaca (2019)
I kind of liked it...
First of all, I have nothing to do with the folks who made this film. No bias here, just my honest opinion. Well, maybe a little bias since I'm a sci-fi nut in general.
I thought the story held together decently. Not perfect but I've seen worse...
Acting was decent, effects were decent... I'd watch it again.
Not sure why so many dislike it, I'm gonna go with "matter of taste".
Not a block buster but not horrible either. Perhaps watch it as a "warm up movie" on your movie evening, then you'll still have something better to watch IF you don't like this one.
Star Raiders: The Adventures of Saber Raine (2017)
Bad in a good way
I liked this movie.
It's definitely a B movie, much of the acting as well as the effects is so-so, but there are also clear nods to old school sci-fi, kind of a mix of some old Flash Gordon movie and some of the cheaper 80's sci-fi stuff, but also randomly mixed up with modern style tech/effects just to spice things up.
If you also consider that it's literally a low budget movie (at least partially financed through fundraising), it's not bad at all.
I think it works. I've seen worse stuff rating higher on IMDb...
+ + + Just to give you perspective: I like sci-fi a lot. I rarely shut off or fast forward even the shittiest of movies. It has happened perhaps 2-3 times that I can remember, and I've watched hundreds of sci-fi movies and TV shows.
Red Lights (2012)
Not bad, but not as good as I expected
I think this movie mainly lacks in direction. The main actors are known to perform good, so the problem must lie elsewhere...
In the beginning the movie gives a slightly odd feeling, it's like the main characters are slightly "off" somehow. It's like the movie tries to give a quick look into their lives so we'll get to know them but the dialogs and storytelling doesn't feel quite natural.
It gets better after a while, when things start to happen and the focus moves from the individuals to their experiences. There is stuff that never is explained, but at least some of the "plot holes" can be explained with some imagination... But still, parts of the story could've been told better.
The ending is of the surprise kind, and makes this movie only really enjoyable once.
And for you who just love Sigourney Weaver, you should know that after about a hour she's not the main character anymore, and from there on the movie mainly follows another person.
Leverage: The Office Job (2011)
Out of style
Most episodes of Leverage are great with interesting plots, surprises and action. It usually has a sharp and clever way of telling the story, that I like.
However, this episode is out of style compared to most previous episodes, with a documentary feel that gives the storytelling a sloppy and messy feel.
It also has way too many awkward moments and even "the evil antagonist" doesn't give the usual cold-blooded impression.
I assume the documentary style is supposed to be a spoof of something else, but it definitely wasn't in my taste so I'll rate this a 5/10.
Bitch Slap (2009)
Well done but the ending gave me a foul taste
This is a well done "B-movie on purpose" with lots of action, violence, blood and sex... quite entertaining if you like that kind of stuff. Some "cheesy" parts, but that's part of the genre.
What I really really disliked was the ending, mostly because I'm a sucker for (at least somewhat) happy endings. This one seemed to be worth the while all the way up to the end, which just made me wish I hadn't watched it at all...
So if you can handle a non-happy ending, enjoy the movie for what it is... but if not, avoid and watch something else. (Or end off with some other movie!)
Stargate: Atlantis: Harmony (2008)
The annoying brat princess ruins it...
Not sure if the stuff below can be counted as "spoilers", but I guess it might... so now you've been warned. :)
Here we go:
I've always preferred the more serious episodes of Stargate (both SG-1 and Atlantis), and I think the early years were the best, when many episodes connected back to ancient Earth history. With that said, I still like the more recent stuff too. After all, I'm a sci-fi lover in general.
What I usually _don't_ like with Stargate, are the episodes where they try too hard to be 'funny'. A funny comment every now and then is usually OK, but when entire episodes are meant to be 'funny', they usually aren't. (With some exceptions.)
Like this one...
It's about a young princess that must go on some quest and perform some mystical/magical task to prove she's worthy to become the new queen. Because of her youth, her sisters are concerned she might not be up to the task. McKay and Sheppard to the rescue...
Turns out the little princess is a spoiled and annoying brat that makes the entire journey miserable for her two followers. Sure, there are some real dangers too (aren't there always?), and the princess turns out to have some qualities too, but the dominating element in this episode is the annoying girl that goes on and on being annoying... and finally gets away with it. She didn't even learn a lesson!
Maybe you're more tolerant than me, then go ahead and watch it. If my review above makes you worried, keep your expectations low... who knows, you might even think it's actually funny! I didn't.
WarGames: The Dead Code (2008)
Definitely a B movie, but I've seen worse
I think this could've been a decent movie, and some of its parts are OK... but in whole it's a B movie. Same about the plot, parts are OK but it has several holes and oddities that doesn't quite add up. Acting is mostly OK, I've seen worse of this too. :)
The beginning sets the level, with cars driving in the desert, making "cool" but totally unnecessary jumps through some small dunes (In slow motion! Cool!), like the drivers had never seen sand before... It gets slightly better from there, but not much.
If you're gonna rent this, get another one too and use this one as a warm-up. Keep expectations low and it might work for you.
