Land of the Dead (2005)
Celebrate this movie
The Land of The Dead was by far the best zombie movie I've ever seen. Anybody that has watched any number of zombie movies knows that 99-100% of the non-zombies characters are going to die. The movie then becomes one of those tired films where we just guess when and how everybody buys it and hope to get scared in the process. This becomes a boring repetitive process where we refuse to attach ourselves to any of the characters thus cutting down on the shock value of this genre of film. Land of The Dead was pleasantly surprising in the fact that although I had already wrote off the whole cast as death bound, more than one of the main characters was still alive at the end. Not only were they still alive, but there was hope that they weren't going to die soon.
True, other movies save humanity from zombies and the good guy wins. True, some movies do have more than one of the main characters live until the end of the film. However, none create such a feel of "Man vs. Zombie" instead of "Zombie eat Man". This is the the first zombie movie that I actually want to see a sequel to. I actually care about what happens next to these people and it doesn't seem hopeless anymore. Thank you for this movie. Thank you for renewing my hope in zombie movies.
The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
Real people, real problems
Some movies make you laugh, some movies make you cry, some movies make you indifferent. This movie can do all of these or none. If you looking for a movie that doesn't make you feel anything and you get no feel of who the characters really are then you'll hate this movie. if you want a movie where the characters are like real people and you get a sense of who they are then you might like this movie. People are messed up. Being a person you most likely can vouch for the fact that we are all strange and have deep seeded emotional problems. The Royal Tenenbaums reminds us that everybody is like this so maybe we aren't that strange or troubled after all. Maybe we are just people. This reality is what makes this movie. However, if you don't want to think or feel and you don't need character development then there are lots of mindless high budget movies out there just for you that aren't this movie.
The entire cast of this movie came through with strong performances, even the butler whom I don't even believe was an actor (he just fit right in there). The artistic level of this film was perfect, not pretentious at all. The soundtrack was perfect. This movie is memorable, quotable, and always a treat to watch.
L'ours (1988)
man vs. animal
I liked and disliked many aspects of this movie. The human noises for the cub were quite annoying at times, but I understood the purpose for them. People need a connection so that they can feel the bear's pain. The humans were crucial to the plot... you need conflict. Dialouge was important too, 88 minutes of a person making slurping and whining noises would've been unbearable without people talking. The hunters however were not so scary. They were scary when I was a kid, however as an adult I found them pretty much harmless. The big bear did more damage in this movie then the hunters. I realize the younger hunter had a life threatening experience, but the way the other two hunters cut there rather steep loses and just left was kind of unbelievable. The bear's dreams were creepy even now and the resolution right at hibernation was perfect. The ultimate feel of this movie was warm and fuzzy and the intent was in the right place.
