An experience nearly successful
13 January 2003
This film (which can be seen as a standalone film) is part of a trilogy. Three films, not consecutive, but parallel. Three stories, simultaneous, with same actors, same characters. Main actors in one film are secondary actors in the two others. There are common scenes between each movie, but always shown in a different way, a different point of vue.

"Un couple epatant" is a comedy, with (Ornella Muti/Francois Morel),"Cavale" is a thriller, with (Lucas Belvaux/Catherine Frot), and "Apres la vie" is a drama, with (Gilbert Melki/Dominique Blanc).

You can see only one or two of these movies, but it is really better to see all of them, as each one enlights some dark moments of the two others. The supposed order is the one i used, but you can see these films in any order.

Individually speaking, the films are average (except "Apres la vie", the best one), but globally the experience is very good and very exciting.

Good, but far from perfect
26 December 2002
I expected great things from this second opus of the trilogy (specially when i saw the first votes), but i was a bit disappointed.

First, there is no abstract of the first episode, so you are supposed to have seen it and remember it precisely, or to buy the DVD. Second, i believe that if i haven't read the book, i should be very confused, as the film is a permanent "zapping" between parallel stories (even in the

most intense moments). By the way, the hobbits parts (Frodo/Sam/Gollum and Pippin/Merry/Ents) are very light compared to Aragorn part, so i suppose that the hobbits are boring Peter Jackson and that he include them just because he has to. Finally, the great magicians Gandalf and Saruman with their big noose don't seem to me so powerful.

Well, there are good things anyway in that film. I like very much Gollum, i like the big battle scene (and the fun one in Isengard), i like details like the orcs, the wargs, the gates of mordor, and many others.

I gave 7/10 (9/10 to the first opus), i believe this film is overrated, even if i will wait one year again like so many people to see the final episode.

Can ten million euros change life for an ordinary man ?
28 November 2002
It is the dream of so many people, being an ordinary person, and suddenly becoming rich in only one day. What would you do with 10 unexpected million euros/dollars ?

The hero, Aldo has a little problem : he's just divorcing and doesn't want any cent of this fortune to end in the pocket of his future-ex wife, so he has to wait until the divorce is pronounced. A so big secret is very hard to keep. How can he change his life while apparently continuing the previous one ? What about his friends ? That's all the subject of this film, with an good scenario, an excellent Jean-Pierre Darroussin, very funny situations and dialogs. A film which make you rich for almost two hours.

Fun but a poor adaptation of "Treasure Island"
28 November 2002
Treasure island is one of the greatest adventure books ever written. When i was a child, this book made me dream of pirates, of treasures, of ships. Well, there is no epic wind of adventure on that boat, and the universe created is very superficial.

So, you remove the story, you remove the universe, you forgot the music (i heard the french track), there's only the characters left. Morph, the "thing", is really very funny and saves itself the film from the disaster. Long John Silver is very kind (should he ?), as the doctor is an interesting character. The crew, coming directly from Star Wars (or from the french comic "Valerian"), is a catalog of strange creatures. You may watch this film if you want to laugh, but please forget that it is adapted from "Treasure island", so you should be less disappointed than me.

Two hours to change your life
30 May 2001
"This movie will change your life", that's what is said in trailer. I thought it was a bit pretentious ... before i watch it ! Don't be afraid of ghosts, Amelie Poulain will haunt you for days. I recommend you not to drive just after the film, because it could change your life in an unexpected way ! So how could a single movie change your life ? Well, it'll simply make you happy, and appreciate differently each little joy of life.

This is the simple story of a young woman with a simple life (she is a barmaid), who decided one day to make people around her happy. She acts as a kind of guardian angel, a clever one. Anyway, she has a problem : she is very shy, so she can't take care herself of her own happiness. I won't tell you more about the story to preserve a bit of mystery.

If you remember the two previous (except Alien 4) films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet, "Delicatessen" and "City of lost children", you'll find some strong similarities, and many actors of these movies are again present : Dominique Pinon, Rufus, Tiky Holgado, Serge Merlin, ... . Without Marc Caro, this movie lose the "dark side" of the previous ones : there is no violence, no death (except two, but amusing ones), the dominant colors are different. Yes, this film is a Romance, but not at all a naive and boring one, it is really full of details (you need to watch the movie several times to discover it), it's pure poetry. The music, light and simple, perfectly fits the story. One of the most important character of the film is Paris, not the touristy Paris but the charming, human and timeless one, and it contributes strongly to the enchanting atmosphere. Oops ! I nearly forgot to tell you that not only this film is touching and brilliant, but it is very funny ! Audrey Tautou is simply great as Amelie Poulain. Her smile and her big eyes could melt an iceberg, her mischievous voice make her a fairy. You'll undoubtedly love her. Other actors, like Dominique Pinon (what a great actor, so different roles each time, and so perfectly played !), Serge Merlin, Isabelle Nanty, Matthieu Kassowitz, and so many others are excellent. You are not forced to watch this movie, but it should be inhuman to ignore it, it should be refusing happiness.
