Brats (2024)
Traversing an Era
Sentenced to my bed with a weird illness one day, I happened upon "Brats" as I ventured from one streaming service to another on my TV. I grew up in the 80s, and I remember those who were labeled the "Brat Pack" in those odd years. So the title "Brats" captured my interest.
And - so - I selected the documentary. I'm glad I hit the PLAY button.
Seeing Andrew McCarthy at my own age(ish) now was a jolt for me, I have to admit. It made me wonder how someone might look at me forty years later (although, throughout the documentary, Andrew constantly claimed today was "thirty years later"). Yet, the sight of Andrew McCarthy so many years later was still familiar to me, and, in some ways, nostalgic. I became engrossed by the sight of him - his age (and mine-ish) was fond for me to see.
As Andrew McCarthy traveled the U. S. highways to revisit those of his (or "our" - well, at least "my") youth, he had the nerve to ask others of his successful era how they felt about being typified as a member of the "Brat Pack". He filmed their honest responses, and he let us view his own "take" on the label; how it might've affected him and all their lives.
"Brats" justly depicts the era it represents. And, corny as it may sound, this film offers how different perspectives from many others can have a lasting impact on one's self.
As I'm all better from my bed-ridden situation, I unquestionably rate this film 10 stars. It sticks in my mind, even weeks later. "Brats" made me revisit an era that I really liked...and the personalities that I really loved.
Thanks for the memories, you guys & gals. You're treasured.
Unfaithful: Caught in the Act (2022)
Reason why zero stars should be an option
This is one of those era-qualifying shows that I've stumbled across at 3AM, after waking up on the couch and realizing I must've rolled onto the remote, unintentionally changing the channel to 1255. This program weighs heavy with emotional substance, one that stabs the societal heart and pierces even the strongest of ears.
In just a single episode - even in just the 23 seconds I managed to endure - it proved to be such a very touching experience. To be invited into the genuine spectacles of these human beings; to witness the hardships of the finest of today's personage; and to ride the extreme highs and lows of emotions that repeatedly soar and crash in just mere seconds...I'm almost left speechless.
And yet, I'm compelled to say more.
In these trying times, we need to recognize that life's rewards are bestowed upon us in the form of red party cups, colorful protruding fingernails, and the occasional hand-snapping right in front of our faces. Embrace the civility of the age that this show portrays, friends. "Unfaithful" so accurately exemplifies the unquestionable caliber that some productions can reach - far reach. Bless the producers of "Unfaithful". I'm truly left stupefied by the level of talent of those whose product I accidentally brought into my unsuspecting home.
Amy Schumer Learns to Cook (2020)
Pass My Compliments to the Chef(s)
Come on, people-who-likely-send-their-food-back while dining at Carl's Jr - it's just a light comedy show built around an unsavory time of being quarantined. Admittedly, "Amy Schumer Learns to Cook" is raw - under-cooked in the least - but I for one hope they keep it this way.
This young couple brings us into their home (or somebody's) to experience their confined lifestyle - to let us watch their harmless banter, their clunking around that tiny kitchen, thieve their neighbor's garden - oh, and there's some cooking going on, too. I appreciate that the Food Network lets Amy be Amy, and it's cool to get to know this small family.
I think the viewers who are somehow appalled by this humorous show need to join Amy in the first segment of each episode and make themselves a drink along with her - and just chill out to the rest of the show.
It's FUNNY!
