Total Drama Island (2007)
What an Unexpected Drama Series
This is a rating for the first two seasons, Island and Action.
It took me a while to finish both of these and they were pretty pleasant to watch! I didn't really know what to expect going into this, but my expectations were succeeded!
There are likeable characters and some characters you will absolutely hate, giving 'drama' at its finest! And Chris is hilarious, he really makes the show.
The writing is unique in the sense of it's basically an animated reality show. It's something that is rarely ever done and it works!
However, I feel like some characters don't have great development (cough, Trent) and some plot lines aren't necessary. However, I'd recommend checking this one out! It's a pretty cool show.
The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild (2022)
The Ice Age: Adventures of Waiting in a Long Queue with Buck Wild.
I'd recommend doing anything over watching this terrible movie.
It felt like all the love of the original Ice Age movies had been sucked out of the franchise to make a cash-grab. The animation is lifeless, which no hate to the animators, but it's something that bugs me. The new characters are annoying and irrelevant. Crash and Eddie are very irritating and the villain, or well, 'antagonist', is pathetic.
Simon Pegg coming back for his role earns a star, but the script they give him to work with is so bad, it doesn't make up for how bad this movie is.
I wouldn't ever watch this again. There's other ways to spend your time, even watching paint dry would be more productive than watching this movie.
Luca (2021)
Pretty Enjoyable!
The Fandom was something in particular which made me put off watching this movie. I just wasn't sure what to expect. I've really been wanting to watch more animation though, so I decided to put it on and I was pleasantly surprised.
I didn't really have high expectations, not because I thought it'd be terrible but because I feared an underdeveloped plot. So when I saw this film, I was pretty outstanded. The animation seems to take an Aardman sort of turn - how I imagine their animation would be if they didn't do stop motion. This wasn't off-putting and was really enjoyable to watch! Luca, Alberto and Gullia were really enjoyable characters and I felt like the comedy was spread across evenly enough.
If I had to criticise it, I'd say Luca and Albertos introduction happened pretty fast which made it difficult to understand their bond at first, but it's easier to see later in the film. I'd also say Gullias character felt a bit all over the place at times, and some of the other characters seemed to just be... there. Loved Gullia's dad though, he was great.
It's not trying to be Pixars next big film, it's just a fun little film showing the friendship of 2 boys and honestly, I love it for what it is.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Actually Really Enjoyed It!
Whoa! I watched Shang-Chi because I wanted to put something on in the background and I just ended up getting invested!
I would go to say this is one of the best singular films in the MCU. I found films such as Thor and Black Panther slightly boring. They are full of information but I just couldn't get invested as much as I wanted too. I'd slightly fallen out of my obsession with the MCU over the past couple of years, but Shang-Chi could help bring my obsession back.
It's about so many things at once, but the main plot is basically about Shang-Chi trying to find family with his friend Katie. That's the best way to describe it without minor spoilers. I believe this film really represented the culture well, and the scenery really helped to intrigue me to keep watching longer. The characters are all pretty likeable too and the fight scenes were amazing!
A criticism I would have, which I have with many Marvel films, is that I feel like some scenes dragged on a little too long, but that's me really picking in details. I also found it hard to follow the plot at one point, but I soon picked back up what was happening.
I really recommend this, even if you're not a fan of the MCU. I'd say it's one of Marvels strongest movies that has released recently! Really looking forward to where Marvel takes this series next.
Free Guy (2021)
Not as cheesy as I expected.
I wanted to give this film a watch considering I do particularly enjoy Video Game themed films, so that's exactly what I did and surprisingly it wasn't as cheesy as I expected it to be.
The minute you start the film you're shown this world which sort of puts a new aspect onto the characters in the video games which you are playing. The plot is basically about this NPC named Guy who discovers perhaps he's more than just your average guy. The friendships shown within this film are pretty pure and even caused one heartfelt moment at the climax part of the film. The scenery seemed decent but the graphics were amazing.
Unfortunately, there are many parts of the film which just feel unneeded. I felt like some of the references to other pieces of media were shoved in your face at times regardless of if you wanted to see these cameos or not. I do also criticise the plot for being pretty predictable. Once you break into the main plot of the film, you can pretty much predict how it's going to end.
Despite that though, I do believe this is a decent enough film. Would I watch it again? Not willingly, but if family put it on, it wouldn't be difficult to sit through again. I'd definately say to watch it if you're a Ryan Reynolds fan, too. Personally, I'd give it a 6/7. It was good but not amazing.
Shingeki no Kyojin (2013)
Definately deserves the hype.
So I have been watching this series for a LONG time now and I am glad to be finished, but although it's not a 10 out of 10 for me, it was great and I immediately recommend anyone to check this out.
Where do I even start? Perhaps from the beginning, as brief as I can. I found it pretty unsuspenseful at first. Maybe because I had been spoiled almost everything by the infamous fandom, and although I enjoyed it, I struggled to bring myself onto the next episode because I knew what awaited me. I didn't really know the characters and I was finding it hard to sympathise with any characters, but I know that if I knew zero spoilers, I would have loved this show so much, which I realised when I got to the third season.
The third season takes a while to get to and I'm sure by the end of the 1st season you'll know if you like the show or not, but season 3 was something else for me. I knew nothing about the characters which were introduced here and what their purpose was, and I really enjoyed watching their stories unravel not knowing what was going to happen next. The animation is also stunning in this season. That Levi vs Kenny fight? Stunning. It also carries onto the last part of the third season which had me continuously watching just for the animation alone! And the fourth season was great too, I didn't know too much about the fourth season and it had me on the edge of my seat!
So where does Attack on Titan go downward in my opinion? Well, I do believe the story can be a little hard to keep up with. I found myself jumping from one story to another, especially in season 4. The story is extremely well written but does take a little while to grasp. However, this is just my opinion. There's many characters for you to get to know and love, and many characters you'll hate.
I really recommend this anime if you haven't seen it already. I'll definately be rewatching it sometime in the future and it will definately be in my top 10 for a long time!
The Croods (2013)
Really Fun and Enjoyable!
The idea of The Croods had never really interested me when it released. I'm just not really into the Caveman sort-of story. However, I decided to watch this with some friends and it actually turned out a LOT better than I expected.
Don't get me wrong, this isn't Dreamworks best animated movie, but I would say its up there. Let's start off with the setting. Moving from a desolate desert setting to a beautiful forest with many strange and unique creatures really adds that extra touch. Even the desert land was fun to look at! The animation that was shown when portraying these lands was just beautiful and looked great. Furthermore, the character designs are good! It's not hyper unrealistic like with Sony's newest Hotel T film, but it's not too realistic so you won't forget you're watching an animated film.
So what lets the movie down a little? The story. It's your generic 'rebellious teenage girl' and 'protective father' storyline but with a twist: it's the end of the world! I'd say Dreamworks did a pretty decent job of adding a twist to it though which made the second half of the film a lot more pleasant than the first. One scene with the father character, known as Grug, was actually really heartfelt and I could see the care that was put in to this film.
Overall, it was super enjoyable and I know that if I was a child, I would have adored this film. Definately give it a watch if you feel like you'd like it!
Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
...Overhated
I'll just start it off here. It's not perfect. As a kid, I didn't really watch the original Space Jam but loved Looney Tunes. I just wasn't into the whole sports theme. I remember certain parts of the original, such as Micheal interacting with the Looney Tunes characters, and when I heard a film with some 2D animation was coming to cinemas, I was hyped. I love 2D animation and I don't understand why it doesn't do well in terms of the box office.
I didn't go into this film expecting much and... I got exactly what I expected. It was a fun filled experience but I felt bored? I'm unsure how to describe it. The 3D models look off at times and the acting was mediocre at best (I could not take the villain seriously). I also didn't laugh much at all which is unusual as I still find myself laughing at Looney Tunes to this day.
The cameos though were really fun and I loved seeing the Tune World come to life. At the end of the day though, this is a kids movie. I'm not the correct target audience for this film. And you know exactly what I would have though of this as a kid? It's ok. Nothing more. I would have went off to watch the original cartoons afterwards. It's pretty unmemorable and I can't even remember the kids name off the top of my head, considering I just watched it yesterday.
It's a good movie and a fun ride, but probably one you'll only watch once unless you absolutely love Looney Tunes, 3D animation and basketball.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Underrated Fun Film
I've been meaning to watch this for a while and finally found the time to watch it. I had heard a lot of negative things about this film so I went in with mediocre expectations, which were blown away.
Disney is up to their game with their visuals. Wow! The animation was great and I loved the look of all the characters! None of the designs looked bad or looked out of place, and the water looked beautiful. In addition, the story is really good. The fact that the relationship between Raya and her father is genuine and not just a 'you need to find a big strong man' plotline which adds extra to the story is amazing.
I would say this would be better as an animated series rather than a film. Theres a lot of plot to fit into such a small space of time, such as exploring each of the lands and characrer interaction time. Everything seemed to happen in a blink of an eye which isn't a bad thing, I'd just personally love for more lands to be explored.
Please don't let the negative comments fool you. These visuals are great and I really liked this film! It's a great film to sit down with the family and watch.
Hotel Transylvania (2012)
Really Good Nostalgic Trip
This used to be a favorite of mine growing up, and since a 4th film is unfortunately coming out, I decided to give the 1st and 2nd films a rewatch since that is definately where this series peaked.
I'll give this film credit where it's due. It's not the best. Some jokes feel like they are forced and don't really sit well. In addition, some of the animation looks weird at times. It's Sony's usual wacky animation so it's pretty good, but doesn't stand up to the animation of the greats such as Disney.
However, the amount of lore this film has makes me wish it was explored in later films and not just to be broken (such as the 'zing' lore being broken in the 3rd movie just to create a selling point). The Drac Pack are great together and it makes me wish they did more together. The second half of the movie and the first 15 minutes are great as it shows so much character interaction, and I love how the hotel looks too, really wish we saw more of it.
In terms of story... it's mediocre. I don't understand some points to it but it's simply just there for plot. Basically, the story is about Dracula trying to keep his daughter and friends safe by building a hotel. It's a sweet but corny story and it gives me so much nostalgia. It's a shame they really watered down this series to it's bare minimum though, there's so much that could have been done with it!
Personally, I do enjoy this film and I'll watch it as a comfort movie for nostalgia! It's message is really sweet and I do recommend checking this one out.
Gekijô-ban Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Ressha-hen (2020)
Loved It.
I am glad I was able to see this movie. I thought it would just be one 2 hour long episode. I was wrong!
Do I recommend watching the movie before Season 2? Yes, and it's worth it. The visuals are beautiful and it was a great watch! I had unfortunately heard the odd spoiler here and there but I still even got a little teary-eyed at the end. I can't wait to see what this series has to offer in the future!
My only criticism is that it felt like Zenitsu didn't really do much in the film and he was just 'there'. However, I've heard it stays true to the manga and I love how they portrayed Rengoku! I'm definately watching again!
Kimetsu no Yaiba (2019)
Give it a chance, it gets amazing!
After finishing another anime, I started to watch this one out of complete boredom. I expected highly, so maybe I was underwhelmed by the first few episodes, as sad as it is to say. The first few episodes are great, but I just see them going so slowly paced and often referring to the past, which is not something that interests me.
And then Episode 7 hit. Wow. Just wow. The full potential this anime can get too is absolutely amazing and I love the fight scenes! There are parts where the story is slow paced but you realise it has to be slow in order for the plot to work. In addition, Tanjiro is a really likeable mc and I ended up really enjoying this anime!
I have to say probably episode 15 is where it starts getting really interesting and looking back, was probably my favourite part within this season! (Episode 14 was my favorite episode though). I can't wait to see more!
Yakusoku no Neverland (2019)
Now THIS is an anime I love
(Only counting the 1st season in this review. I'm an anime only so I'll get round to the 2nd season eventually, but I'm expecting to be highly disappointed).
This anime FINALLY came to Netflix in my country, and this has been on my watchlist forever. During a stressful day, I put aside my studies and decided to binge this in one night and oh my goodness. The first episode had me hooked. I was aware of the odd spoiler here and there due to my curious self, but I was still hooked onto the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next.
There is no particular dislikeable character. You end up sympathising with each character eventually and actually rooting for them towards the end. The anime itself is about Emma, Norman and Ray, three best friends who are basically trying to change normality when discovering a horrific secret. I would not recommend this anime if you dislike dark themes as the theme itself is recurring all the way throughout the anime. Oh, and by the way, be prepared to get emotional. I personally didn't cry but was close, and I've heard many viewers who weren't aware of the manga cried quite a bit.
You'll find yourself on the edge of the seat on a thrilling ride liking one character one minute and disliking them the next. What will happen next? Who knows. Just a note, I do recommend checking out the manga after the 1st season, but this 1st season is extremely enjoyable and I highly recommend it, even to people who aren't fans of anime themselves!
His Dark Materials (2019)
Wow, wow, WOW!
I was requested by a friend to watch this show when season 1 came out and I declined. Talking animals in a show aimed for adults? Really? I thought that the CGI must be terrible and I turned it down. I also turned down the request to watch season 2 with them. I wondered how the show even got a second season. However, one night I got bored and I decided to stick on an episode. Wow... I was hooked. This show is amazing and I found myself watching 3 episodes a night and finished it pretty quick.
Something I was not aware of is the fact this show is an adaptation of a book. This usually worries me a little, but just from the opening theme (which is amazing) I can tell the author had a lot of involvement in this show and from what I can tell, the show does an amazing job at staying true to the books. I fell in love with almost every character and I sympathised with them. I was able to feel sorry for the characters. And the CGI is amazing... wow. Sometimes the talking animals (known as daemons) look like they've actually got an animal on set and they don't make the concept cheesy. I literally don't have any criticism. Probably if I milked the show down to its finest details, then I would maybe find some, but nothing from what I can tell.
Honestly, it has been over a month since watching this show and I want to go back and watch it again. It has some light hearted themes, but also some mystery and season 1 can get very dark. I really enjoyed this show, I highly recommend to anyone!
Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020)
Pretty Visuals - Bland Story
The trailer for this movie looked absolutely amazing, so I decided to give it a watch.
The visuals are amazing. I loved looking at how beautiful the visuals can get from time to time. It was outstanding!
However, the story was overall just... bland? Pretty predictable too. It's worth the watch for definite I would say, but maybe just 1 watch? And the songs just feel very randomly placed.
Definately not a Christmas classic, but not the worst Christmas film.
Titans (2018)
Ermm... it was decent
Ok so... this is by far not the worst program I have seen, but nor is it the best. You'll love characters and then hate them. You'll like an episode then decide later that you dislike that episode. It's really weird.
Season 1 didn't hold that much to offer. You get to meet the main characters and about three side characters, and the main focus is on two of our main characters bonding over time. I thought the visuals were bland at times but overall pretty decent, and the acting, although sometimes stiff, was decent too. There was only about one filler episode (which was an extremely dark episode and I did not expect that, but changed my opinion on one of the side characters). One of the episodes had a lot of anticipation, but the way it was played was really mediocre and I was disappointed with it. And the ending was bland.
Onto the second season and basically forget everything you learnt in the first season. Everyone is a main character now, apart from two of the main characters you grew to love! Sure, I loved seeing Hank and Dawn get more screentime so I could grow to like their characters (though I don't like Dawn), but this isn't about them, it's about the Titans. It takes lots of episodes for the story to progress anywhere, too! But the visuals are better I have noticed, so there's that.
I have never seen Teen Titans or Teen Titans Go, so I can't compare the two. I wouldn't say this was a failure and did keep me hooked, but I got bored during Season 2.
Overall, this is not a bad show, it's got its perks and its downfalls. I'd recommend to give the first few episodes a go, and see how it plays out!
The Secret Garden (2020)
It got better as it went on
Speaking as someone who has never seen the original movie and has never read the book, I watched this amongst 2 friends who have seen the original movie. For the first half, I found myself looking at my phone and scrolling through social media. I thought the dog was cute, but that was about it really. I was really confused about the plot and I didnt quite grasp what was going on. However, it certainly got more interesting as it got on. Still a little boring, but I thought the final 10 minutes, although still confusing, was probably the best part of the film in my eyes.
After speaking to my friends after the film, they stated that it was nowhere near as good as the original film. They did miss out a few things and apprently changed the appearance of the lead. However, they did enjoy the movie, but one friend did admit to find it slightly boring too.
I'd call this a background movie. It's ok to be played in the background while you're doing chores. If you sat down to watch it, you'd probably be bored. The reason this is a 6/10 and not a 5/10, is because I was captivated by the visuals. Again, I've not seen the original film so I'm not sure if this is superior or not, but I just enjoyed all the visuals this film had to offer. I also thought a few characters were randomly placed, too.
Not a bad film, but not exactly a masterpiece in my eyes.
Onward (2020)
A really unexpected film.
Okay, wow! Most Pixar movies recently have been a little... sub-par, but Onward is one that really threw me off track! The lead character Ian is probably one of the most relatable characters I could personally relate to in Pixar films, and his brother was really likeable too! The music to the movie was great, and I just wanted to keep watching and explore more of this world! Also, the humour kept me and the family laughing for a good while!
The plot, although kind-of predictable, did end up surprising me at times with little twists and turns I really did not expect! And it's your average Pixar animation. Nothing out of the ordinary, but the wizarding animation was pretty cool!
I would watch this film again, wow! It was amazing and I really enjoyed it!
BNA (2020)
Amazing Animation!
Now this, this is an anime I enjoyed alot. Another great anime from Studio Trigger! This is one that stays on my mind alot and I think about pretty frequently. Our main character, Michiru, is actually a really likeable lead, and the other MC Shriou is just the grumpy grandpa character but he's likeable too! The other characters are great aswell! In addition to that, the animation is absolutely stunning! I loved watching the visual effects of this, especially as it got better as the show went on!
The plot isn't original by many means, and although the ending isn't all that predictable, it's still a pretty popular plot it follows. However, don't let that put you off!
I love this anime. It gives me huge Zootopia vibes. I'm sure this is an anime fans of Beastars can get behind whilst they wait for Season 2! May I also mention that the dub is also really good? Ben did a great job as Shirou in my opinion!
Once Upon a Time (2011)
It does get worse as it goes on.
I genuinely did enjoy this show. I'm not someone who's really into fantasy, so seasons 3-5 appealed more to me, and I really enjoyed the 6th season's ending.
Season 7 is terrible, I didn't like it all that much as it took away the charm of the original seasons.
There are surprisingly quite a few likeable characters. I really liked the personalities of Regina and Killian, and even the humour of Rumplestiltskin.
I'd recommend trying this show and at least watching it for a little while (until the ending of season 1) to find out if this show appeals to you, as it does take a while to get into the story.
