The Hunters (1958)
Big Goof
When the Chinese are searching for the downed flyers their convoy blatantly consists of WWII era American jeeps and half-tracks. This obvious anachronism serves to cheapen the appearance of otherwise OK escapist entertainment for Korian War buffs. of course as with the fake Migs they there was probably no way to procure authentic Chinese military vehicles. The producer could have spared us the agony of this technical deficiency that takes our mind off the story by eliminating the shot all together. The mere implication of vehicles would have been sufficient, or distant shots of road dust and then infantry advancing would have been sufficient. This goof is on the same par as using white actors made up to replicate Japanese soldiers in early WWII films
What Dreams May Come (1998)
Response to Skydancer's review
The fact is Skydancer is wrong. How he/she can actually believe that Christianity is moving "in this direction" makes no sense. What factual basis does Skydancer have to support his/her position? The only after life Christianity stands for is that which places man in Hell for all time or the true believer at the right hand of God for all eternity. That is to say those that believe Jesus is Lord. See John 3:16 for more details. Further, where the word of God as set forth in the old and new covenents, is the same yesterday, today, and always the concept of Christianity moving in a direction is an impossibility. It is the unbeliever that moves toward Christianity and hopefully embraces that living God and thereby embraces His word.
The Racket (1951)
Good movie but short on credibility
Technically, this movie is enjoyable if you're in to old crime dramas. However if you are detail oriented to the point they drive you nuts like me here are the problems with this flick that detract from its credibility.
1. Robert Mitchum, born 1917, was a 33 year old experienced police captain who looked closer to being a rookie. His part called for a 40's something actor.
2. William Talman, born 1915, was a 35 year old rookie cop who looked closer to being a captain.
Maybe Talman and Mitchum should have reversed taken each other's roles.
Come Blow Your Horn (1963)
Come Blow Your Horn blew it
The movie truly stinks. Not much better than an Elvis cookie cutter film of the same period. One wonders what Frank was thinking coming off Manchurien Candidate, Some Came Running, Joker is Wild, Man with the Golden Gun etc. It would only appeal to a loyal FS fan such as myself. The movie appears to be a remake of Frank's earlier "Tender Trap" of the late fifties. The concept really did not need to be revisited in 1963. Regarding the previous reviewer's comments about Frank's hat and coat in the era of the Stones, the Stones hadn't happened yet, in America. Kennedy was still alive. The British invasion was still months away when the film was released. So Frank's outfit was still in vogue for a swinging single of the early 60's. Further, Frank was not 51. He was born in 1915. Try 48. He still lacked credibility as the swinging 39 year old with a 21 year old brother. Perhaps a better lead for the movie would have been Robert Wagner or even Steve McQueen. Later
Police Story (1973)
Bold and Innovative casting against type
Police Story was a bold and innovative concept for television police drama. It was perhaps the first police drama to portray cops as real humans with human frailties. There was not a smooth script with the sense that everything was under control. There was always an edge that something might go wrong and be irreparable by the end of the show. Its strengths were the revolving collection of actors from week to week. It often took well known type casted actors such as Martin Milnor as Pete Malloy,Adam 12 Hugh O'Brien as Wyatte Earp, and others and played them against type as the so clean appearing cops they were used to playing. That casting against type could make even a lack luster episode interesting.
