Slackers (2002)
Slackers Adjectives
Slackers is one of the most unbalanced, bizarre movies I have ever seen! Half is chock-full of sexually charged, psychedelic, often disturbing, gross-out gags while the other is a tame, boring, run of the mill love story (lots of adjectives, I know). Despite its flaws though I found that on second viewing Slackers became a considerably more respectable movie then I had originally thought. Firstly, it has a great soundtrack which includes an orchestrated version of "Baba O'Reilly" and a choir version of "the Sign". Secondly, it has Jason Schwartzman and Michael C. Maronna whose craziness plays well off the gross-out gags. Finally, I'd like to commend this movie for how insane it really is once you get passed the boring plot.
Unfortunately I can't bring myself to like Devon Sawa, whose great guy that gets the girl is utterly pathetic and too counter crazy to help this movie. Whenever things start to pick up it seems his character is always there to slow them down again. Jason Segel is also a difficult actor to like because his high-school/college stoner persona is always clouded by his naivety. And while we're on the subject my college experience showed me more sarcastic college characters (like the T.A.) then ones naive enough to believe in "true love". The final problem I have is that although I like Jason Schwartzman, its hard to find his psychotic character all that funny.
Final verdict is a 6 of 10
Pumpkinhead (1988)
this movie deserves more credit then it gets
Several years ago i brought this movie to a friend's house for us to watch as part of a horror movie night, and I still get made fun of for it today. Despite all this controversy however my opinion has not changed, Pumkinhead is a decent flick. It features good acting, a decent script, and a very cool villain. While not really a movie destined to scare your pants off, and what movie is, it's still a good time if you have nothing else to do.
Bachelor Party (1984)
even for a dumb movie this is pretty dumb
While I can appreciate the fun 80s movie vibe trying to be achieved in Bachelor Party, it just doesn't cut. The movie is more loud and obnoxious then funny, and while the cast is allowed to over act, they over act just a little too much. Sorry Tom but this character and plot device just aren't good enough.
Knockaround Guys (2001)
In a perfect world this movie would have never been made
I can only pray that the following comments can prevent at least one other human being from viewing this travesty. I think, for the first time ever casting Vin Diesel wasn't the directors primary problem. In this case the primary problem is the plot. In short, it sucks. Here's a bunch of "knockaround guys" and not one of them is doing anything (that isn't completely "round"-about) to quickly solve the problem at hand. When all is said and done however I would like to thank Barry Pepper for not giving us another Battlefield Earth performance, even though he came pretty damn close. My final comment, see "Made" instead, you'll thank me.
Six Feet Under (2001)
surprise, its good!
I've never found such typical character stereotypes so interesting. You can't watch just one episode without wanting to see what happens next to the Fisher family. Pay close attention to Ruth Fisher, performed by Frances Conroy, she's my favorite.
Battlefield Earth (2000)
A truly beautiful and unique film
Before the movie starts an horrific battle takes place that, in minutes, leaves Earth destroyed and mankind enslaved! The reason that it is not in the movie is because it's childs play compared to what follows. The charismatic villan, Terl the Terrible, is the real gold mine. With ferocity so far unparelled in the movie world, Terl learns how to fire a gun, hunt for gold like a ferocious lion and use his master wit to persuade a foolish rebelling earthling and his companions to help him. Between these truly elaborate and well formed scenes a decent plot developes. It's understandable that Terl would let the truly unique and well thought-out character of Jonnie the Earthling know all of his secrets. I can even see how it would be necessary for Jonnie to know all about Terl in order to hunt Gold for him. How could Terl know that Jonnie would manipulate the system and teach his friends all about the truly horrific aliens. Even if Terl found out about this betrayal how could he know that the earthlings would start a small rebellion that would later crush and overthrow the alien conquerers. In a truly magnificent and original final battle scene, hundreds are killed but the earthlings come out on top to retake their home planet, Earth. I can tell you now that I left the theatre feeling refreshed and exhilarated. I'm crossing my fingers for an even more fantastic sequal.
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
crazy, crazy, crazy
Have you ever watched a horror movie and wished they showed the bloody parts. We all know that even the worst slasher movie holds back sometimes. Its not uncommon for a scene to change right before the killer stabs the innocent girl. Well, I always thought that it would be cool if the camera didn't cut away. And that's just what I got when I experienced the Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I've seen lots of movies but this is the only one I wanted to get up an turn off. Not because it was bad but because it was so horrific. Next time your together with a group of friends and looking for a fright fest forget Jason, Freddy, and Mikey, go for Leatherface.
Batman Returns (1992)
Arguably the best Batman
I liked Penguin before I saw the movie. I loved penguin after I saw the movie. He has one of the best make-up jobs ever, although it's a little hard to swallow at first. I only wish he was a more dangerous bad guy who didn't have a circus act to serve as his peons. Keaton is the best Batman and Pfeiffer is a sexy beast. The soundtrack rocks and some of the dialogue really sticks. The plot has its weak points though and the whole story is silly.
Aliens (1986)
This is the best movie ever!
The first time I saw this movie it scared the p*** out of me. Even though is was scary Aliens is more an action than horror movie. If you liked the first movie for its subtle horror, you'll love this one for its loud in your face action. Aliens is the only scfi movie I know( other than Star Wars) that's a war in space and everyone's invited. If you haven't seen it once than rent it but if you've already seen it rent it again. Each time you watch this movie you find another thing to love. This is one of the few times when the sequal is better than the original.
