Thalapathi (1991)
A uniquely taken movie
First of all - this falls into the type of movies which Rajinikanth should've done more often but probably didn't do cause his fans might have expected otherwise. The characters of Rajinikanth and Mammootty were developed really strategically and Thalaivar's acting at times leaves you in amazement. The movie's theme is set along the lines of Karna's dilemma between his character and the friendship with Mammootty (who is essentially shown as Duryodhana's character) and the way how it sequentially gets expended, it was never "boring" to be honest.
A little bit of a drawback (subjective) is that it goes a little too violent which may not be pleasing to some people and at some scenes, the camera either literally stops or moves very slowly which makes you assume the movie is draggy. But that's left to the taste of the viewers and their preferences when it comes to these cinematographic elements.
Overall, a really unique experience, and a worthy movie to be watched.
Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu (2006)
Good action thriller suited for Kamal, still runtime could be cutdown
A film with a really good potential, turned out to be a little draggy cause of unnecessary extensions in the plot. Jyothika (SPOILER AHEAD) is basically a filler character for this film. Her acting and all was good nonetheless, but her presence is just for romantic scenes and one small scene where she meets Kamal at the hospital.
The villain arc, unpopular opinion ahead, feels a little overrated to me. The movie stays true to the title, but the real hunt starts only at the last forty five minutes of the movie. Daniel Balaji's acting is good as well and it kinda compensates the lack of depth in the villain character. And the final "are you homosexual" thing felt really cringe to be honest. Overall a one time decent watch which is not as good of a movie as claimed by a lot.
Ayan (2009)
Decent Commercial with surprisingly engaging screenplay
I watched this movie quite a few times, just watched it again cause liked it in my childhood and I wanted to know how I would feel about it now.
And it still remained amazing to me how the movie keeps the viewers focused while still maintaining the elements necessary for a full-fledged commercial blockbuster. Of course, there are unnecessary scenes in this like in very movie, but the good scenes outweigh the unnecessary ones in my opinions. All actors (especially Surya and Karunas) were well utilized (didn't like Jagan's character that much though, not for the acting but for how his character was written and he was somewhat predictable for me), the plot wasn't draggy at all, and overall the entire movie just went really smooth.
Kantara (2022)
Great concept Ruined by overused storyline
Watched it only on OTT and this movie is better suited for a Theatrical experience as the Visuals were stunning. First half was well set with all the folklore elements and the entire movie stayed true it's cultural theme and didn't deviate too much.... the second half was... well... VERY PREDICTABLE.
That Landlord I knew was definitely a bad person from the start from his mannerism etc. What was even more cringe for me was that police part. Like why even show his initial character thing when you are going to show him like some sort of a messiah at the end? Facepalm moment that was.
Otherwise I liked the camerawork, that Singara Siriye song I surprisingly liked, and some scenes were nice like the jump-scare moments, the talk between hero and the villain after he knows he only killed his cousin.
Cobra (2022)
First movie which actually made me wish for it to end soon.
OMG what can I even tell
Story - Unnecessarily complicated. The "Math Teacher" build up wasn't even needed for this movie and second half was straight up UNWATCHABLE. Parts of the story were either unrelated to the movie and just plain cringe.
Screenplay - It was all over the place with no specific focus on one timeline or one part of the story. Constant switch between main plot and unnecessary romance scenes which made following the already confusing story difficult. Camera work looks like it's done by a 10th grader or something. It actually started out decent and had so much potential for plot development but it kept getting worse.
As you would have already known, length was almost as big as Titanic (3hrs 3 mins), (obviously they reduced it now but still).
Characters - The villain character doesn't seem scary at all, and idk if it because I didn't see the movie properly, but he didn't seem related to the movie at all. Irfan Pathan's character started out quite promising but later he was just weakened out as the plot went.
