Damsel (2024)
Another empty powerful woman flick. -bored woman
The protagonist is an a**hole. But at least she's a strong powerful independent woman, right? Right??
Throughout Elodie's struggle with the dragon, she tries to convince the dragon that it's being lied to. But she doesn't bother to offer the proof until she's brought the dragon within an inch of death. The proof is on her hand. She could have tried. Especially once her sister was down there with her as well. With the same proof. Is this to be admired? Is this the strong powerful woman we are to aim to be? Sure she puts magical healing worms on the dragon and saves its life... but only after brutalizing it.
The characters aren't likeable. The story is shallow and boring. But at least we get about 40 cinematic beautiful shots of Elodie being a badass boss babe? I'm a woman and I'm tired of this garbage. Show me a real woman who has real character and substance. And I will cheer her on as she conquers impossible feats. This ain't it.
The Curious Case of Natalia Grace (2023)
Not a mystery. Sensationalized and poorly constructed.
There is little to no mystery here. The whole production is Jerry springer-ized. If the producers actually cared about Natalia, they wouldn't give one of her abusers so much airtime. There is merit in letting the abuser show his own hand yes, but he did that and then kept doing it for seemingly several hours. Michael is at best a piece of trash coward. At worst he's a psychopath. I didn't believe a single emotional display he had. And all of his behavior in every moment was some sort of studied over exaggerated act to manipulate everyone around him. The adoptive mother was also clearly a sociopathic narcissist. She wanted to use a disabled child for clout.
Natalia herself is probably partially like them. But give what she's been through her entiiiiiire life.. it's not surprising. Disappointing, but not surprising.
All we are left with at the end of this docuseries is having to judge these people. Trying to find a "good guy" in this is futile. Everyone was an a-hole. Doctors, neighbors, adoption agencies that were probably just human traffickers... lawyers...
TLDR: the show is painful to watch because of one person who is allowed to be histrionic and narcissistic for the bulk of the show. And no it's not Natalia.
The Last Witch Hunter (2015)
Simple supernatural action movie
This is another so-so supernatural action movie. One worthy of multitasking while watching. The acting is okay, I've seen worse. Vin doesn't convey the character well. He acts more like a modern guy along for the ride than an ancient immortal witch hunter.
The entire premise is a secular mess. Every aspect of it is directly taken from the Bible and then warped and mishandled. There is a catholic order/ priesthood working with the protagonist for 800 years, and yet they never mention anything to do with God. And they never pray either. But they do wear gargantuan crucifixes! 😆 it would take too long to list how they butchered content from the Bible.
The visuals are very good, set design is impressive, dialogue is boring and the jokes are bad. This film could have been something special if the lead had been someone else, and the whole thing was written by someone who believes or respects the Bible.
2036 Origin Unknown (2018)
anti-human and lacking plot.
Setting aside the somewhat lacking and or cheesy visuals, and just looking at the concepts and story. Because if you truly love science fiction, you have to be willing to do this to some degree. Science fiction is about exploring the meaning of existence and the possibilities in the universe that we have yet to discover. However..
I believe the people who made this movie were in love with 2001 space odyssey, and hate all of humanity. They seem to think that all of us should be destroyed because wars, and because we struggle. And then replaced by a 'better' simulated/ A. I. version of humans. This is the entire plot. It's all very jerky and very little thought went into it.
Katee is great as usual. And there is a tiny kernel of potential in this story... but it's ultimately destroyed by the anti-human nature of it. The ending is frankly a drawn out masturbatory pseudo intellectual light-show. At least we didn't have to listen to 2 hours of someone breathing on a microphone this time.
Another Life (2019)
Jump the shark endlessly
This show started cringy as hell, got a little better, dangled a promising premise, and then got worse and worse and... this show jumps the shark over and over and the writing gets really lazy and cheesy. It's like the writers gave up halfway through season 2. Then it became like a cheap video game. (And I love video games)
The characters are shallow, simple, hardly likeable, and feel more like props than people. It's too bad because there is a bit of value to the story. There is one interesting character that they could have expanded on but they quickly kill them in a very lame way. And ultimately the ending feels rushed and slapped together. Saccharine even.
If you're a science fiction fan and you want something with substance, maybe skip this one.
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
An empty reboot
Can someone tell me why they turned the bad guys into good guys? They actually made the Sanderson sisters good, and the Book as well. What about 'nothing good can come from that book!'?
Dialogue was boring, new characters were boring, plot was boring, acting was good, songs were lame.. why do I keep watching reboots hoping they'll have any semblance to what made the originals great? They even hinted at another movie after the credits... ugh.
At the end of the movie Winnifred sacrifices her sisters lives so she can be all-powerful. But she didn't realize that's what would happen because she didn't read the warning. So after they disintegrate, she is too heart broken to go on. I can't help but think that the original Winnifred would have maybe given pause, but been blinded by her vengeance, insane power, and general narcissism. I dunno.. hard to say on that one. But over the entire movie there was no real conflict.
The Mist (2007)
Sadists will love it.
Lol whoever wrote this is a ****. I would have more respect for it if the characters meant to be the clear headed ones weren't such idiots *only* when more people need to die to add tension. And the twist at the end is just eye-roll material. Lazy writing in my opinion. The dialogue was also really stilted and killed immersion. Lots of 'nobody talks like that!' moments. Cringy waste of time.
3022 (2019)
Reminds me of Star Trek TNG
I'm not sure why people said this movie is boring or lacking substance. Maybe they were hoping for a simpler, more action- packed sci-fi. This movie reminds me of the old Star Trek tv shows like The Next Generation in that it deals with the emotional, moral, and ethical dilemmas faced during space travel/exploration.
The Guilty (2021)
Dull, slow, weird dialogue
For a thriller this movie sure wasn't thrilling. The concept is great. Jake did great. But the scripting was not quite there.
Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
All style no substance
Good lord this was unfortunately boring. And felt like it was 4 hours long. Great actors. Great acting. Great style and visuals. Dull as heck story. Slooooow pacing.
One part had me laughing to tears. The rest was a snoozer.
Artemis Fowl (2020)
The biggest disappointing book movie ever
There's not much to say except that they didn't even seem to try. The book(s) are amazing and wondrous. The story in the movie is a mess. The characters COMPLETELY lack development so nobody cares what happens... why did they even make this movie if they weren't excited enough to be true to the story even somewhat? SMH.
Awake (2021)
Not your mindless action movie
I think the main reason people are rating reviewing this so negatively is because they made it look like more of an action movie than it is. It's more of a thought provoking kind of thing. The ending isn't one of those epic satisfying twist things either which probably didn't help.
However I think it's a great movie. Great acting and a great story. Everything about it is good.
The Ice Road (2021)
Loaded with cringe and bad writing
There are just too many terrible moments. The actors aren't at fault here. Just bad writing. It's a fun brainless action movie to play in the background.
The worst bit to me was (spoilers) when the bridge went out and there are minutes left of air for the trapped miners. The driver's brother was trapped and they'd gotten past the bridge just as it collapses. So WHY would they stop the truck get out and watch the bridge collapse? So the writers could create a crisis so they could kill off a character. Infuriating garbage.
Voyagers (2021)
Lord of the flies in space
First of all it's one of those movies that has whisper quiet dialogue and then the action sequences are 5 times louder than they should be.
As far as the story it's basically lord of the flies in space and with young adults. The writing is okay.
The Girl with All the Gifts (2016)
Not your usual story
It was refreshing to watch a movie where I had no idea what would happen. This one isn't one of the same old stories regurgitated over and over. Glenn close was a special treat in a genre like this.
A couple scenes were kinda cringy but I'm not sure it could've been avoided. Considering the lord of the flies of it.
Breach (2020)
Bruce was the only good part really.
It's the sort of laughable entry level sci fi movie you've already seen several times. Bruce was the only good part about it. I'd like to see him in more sci fi.
I wouldn't recommend the movie unless you're looking for a corny cringy 93 minutes.
The Last Cruise (2021)
That was a long 40 minutes. But not in a bad way.
I think reviews that complain about narcissistic and ignorant people in this short documentary/film are missing the point. We are watching to see what happened. Not what we wish we could see. I think this is a great little film showcasing actual footage (no simulated or acted out scenes) of what happened on that cruise ship. It's surreal, haunting and honest.
Vivarium (2019)
Yikes. Disturbing and haunting.
While it's kinda hard to believe they would follow such an obviously unhinged person somewhere.. the premise is still great. And this one is going to haunt me for a while. If you're looking for a slow paced psychological horror, this is a decent choice.
