Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006)
Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood
I don't watch too many Indian movies these days because i am putout by the rubbish they come out with. But lage raho munnabhai was a welcome change. I had seen the first movie (munnabhai MBBS) and i had liked it. Although the first movie had borrowed its theme from patch Adams, nonetheless the director did a good job. The second movie was totally original(to my knowledge). It shows how a small time goon by chance is forced to learn about Gandhi by chance, and he starts realizing his mistakes. He tries to go out and tells the world the forgotten message of Gandhi. In short he tries to prove wrong the prophesy of Albert Einsteins "Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood". This movie passes along many social messages without being too corny.
Diksha (1991)
A hard hitting commentary about the caste system
This movies portrays the mindset of the people living in the countryside of India. This movie depicts the fountains of hope and optimism that would one day bring back life to the then Indian society which was shackled by the caste structure. On the one hand we have a guru(teacher) who wants to break out of the rigid caste system, but fears that he may annoy the other higher castes. In the end this torch is picked up by one of his ex students who defies society and speaks out against the rigid caste system.
It was a pretty hard hitting movie. The roles were acted out to perfection. The movie was done quite well, right from the title to the rustic setting. But i feel the movie is not everyones cup of tea.If you plan to watch a light movie this is definitely not for you. Overall it is an amazing piece of parallel cinema
