The Lighthouse (2019)
I don't see what all the hype is about.
I'm going to keep this review short. After many people told me how wonderful and groundbreaking this film was I finally saw it and was disappointed. Willam Defoe is amazing as usual. In that I mean he's great at being Willem Defoe, sort of like how Pacino has become a character of himself in his movies. Robert Pattinson does a good job but is crushed by Defoe whenever they share screen time. I don't want to give anything away story wise but I will say this, if you're a fan of vague plots and open endings that you can interpret for yourself then this is for you. If you want to watch a movie that has substance and has a message it wants to impart on you, maybe skip it.
Brutal (2014)
Fun sci-fi action flick with lots of blood!
This is an Indi film that I watched a screening of a few years back. It reminds me of some old school sci-fi flics I would watch growing up. It's not a big budget action drama that seems to be made every five minutes these days. It has a solid story that I have to admit was a little confusing at first but all gets tied up in the end. Lots of great fight scenes with really good choreography. The camera angles put you in the action for most of those fights and there are a lot of them! Some gore no nudity although there was one scene that I was hoping for a little skin but alas it was for not, bummer. Other than that, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a late night action flic. It's certainly better that anything Steven Segal has put out in decades.
Hotaru no haka (1988)
Visually stunning and masterful storytelling.
I saw this movie in college about 12 years ago and it has stayed with me.
It is an absolute must watch for anime fans and for anyone really. I've only seen the subtitled version. It is a touching story of what a young boy will do to keep his little sister alive during world war 2. The emotions are more real than anything I've seen Hollywood do in decades. After watching it I screened it to an entire class of animation students and I kid you not, 30+ adults, men and women alike cried like little babies watching this. It's beautifully done and my all time favorite film.
