Kaadhalan (1994)
What was Shankar smoking?
I'm the hugest fan of Shankar's movies and this is the only one of his movies I had'nt seen. People would know that of all of Shankars movies, this one is the least talked about. Even so it became a super hit. Because of the fanfare, I actually went and FOOLISHLY bought the DVD for over $10 even though I had some reservations about it. You can imagine my disappointment. To add insult to injury, I actually read the movie's gist on the cover, giving away pretty much all of the very little or non existent storyline.
The story is utter horse crap. Boy loves Girl. Girl's dad is bad guy politician who wants to bomb some places using Raghuvaran. Bad guy doesn't like Romance so locks up daughter and beats up the hero. Thats about 90% of the story. The rest concerns the bombing of the general hospital which Prabhu Deva has to save and he does, with no problem. The end.
There are very few good things about this movie. One of them is SP Balasubramanium's brilliant performance as Prabhu's father. The Father-Son relationship really touches you deeply. Second is the performance of the evil Policewoman who really delivers a killing role in all its glorious wretchedness. Nagma's acting is slightly above average. The romantic scenes which fill up this film are extremely annoying and I spent most of the time playing with myself waiting for them to get over.
Eventually I wound up using the fast forward button. So boring was so much of this film and I could'nt believe that this was a Shankar movie? The final part of the movie is mildly interesting. The chaos at the general hospital has been done well. But there is no twist besides the one you will easily predict ie the feud between the assassin/bomber (Raghuvaran) and the bad guy Politician. The ending is terrible. Need I mention that Vadivelu's comedy (his early days when I was thin) was also complete nonsense? The comic relief factor completely fails.
This is Shankar's worst movie. It is much worse than Anniyan. Anniyan at least entertained despite its numerous flaws. This one wont even having you smiling once or twice. It doesn't even deserve put on the same league as the rest of Shankar's movies. I think I'll go and see "Boys" again to wash the effect of this movie off.
