The Ides of March (2011)
Perhaps written by a man?
This movie is not for me. The beginning is good enough and moves quickly with interest, but it's a pet peeve of mine when a woman's trauma is used solely as plot points to progress men's stories/characters. We have the (arguable) rape, abortion, and suicide of a woman - all serving to tell us something about the men characters. It really takes all the enjoyment out of movies when the writers decide to include trauma as a plot device, as opposed to the traumatic experience forming the character's personality/decisions. The filmography is good, the score is beautiful and the acting is solid and believable, but the plot is just disappointing.
Sense, Sensibility & Snowmen (2019)
I've seen a lot of Jane Austen adaptations...
And this has to be one of the worst. I'm not convinced anyone on set actually read Sense & Sensibility. The only thing vaguely similar was the names and the characters of Marianne and Elinor were nothing like the source material. It seems Marianne has all of the sense, and Elinor is seemingly disorganized and a little flaky. The character of Edward was also extremely misaligned, compared to the original and Brandon is hardly in the movie at all. They could have called this movie anything else and named the characters differently, instead of trying to bait Austen fans. I don't even think you can call this an homage.
Rumor Has It... (2005)
Couldn't me made today
"I was so drunk I don't remember anything." "Do I have any say in the matter." This movie is creepy on several levels. Jennifer Aniston's character was manipulated by someone who took advantage of her confusion, her emotions, and her loneliness. Yes, I understand this movie is 25 years old. A lot of movies contain scenes that don't hold up today. But that doesn't give the writers a pass for the actions of a Kevin Costner's character. Shirley MacLaine and Mark Ruffalo are certainly bright spots. There are some funny moment but the overall storyline is somewhat disturbing. Skip the movie: it's not worth the watch.
Persuasion (2022)
A Modern Anne Elliot...
Biting, Critical, and Selfish. Even worse than the dialogue, this movie reimagines our beloved Anne into a sarcastic and self-absorbed heroine. I can relate to Austen's Anne: at times unable to say no, peacekeeping, caring, and kind. This movies transforms her beyond recognition: it has the same basic plot, with none of the heart. Are we supposed to like this heroine? I, unfortunately, cannot.
The Greatest Showman (2017)
What's Not to Love...
...About a slightly neglectful father/husband exploiting people who look different?
Sylvie's Love (2020)
Strong beginning with disappointing second act
I was hooked from the first scene and it's a beautiful movie. But since when is cheating and lying considered romantic?
Christmas in Mississippi (2017)
Music Theft?
The movie is fine, exactly what you'd expect in a Christmas movie. But some of the soundtrack seems to be stolen directly from Ever After. Especially the last 10 minutes. Very weird.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: The Burden of Our Choices (2019)
Out of Character Opinions Create Unified, Pro-Abortion Stance
Understandable that most characters would be pro-abortion, but Carisi and the "deacon at my church" Deputy Chief? Not realistic. Very one-sided view. This episode was solely about abortion, not the abuse this poor girl was the victim of.
Grantchester: Episode #5.6 (2020)
Nonsensical Character "Development"
This was a step back for Will. In fact, it seems like he took a page out of Sidney's book: drinking, hopping into bed with women, being rude to everyone around him. It made no sense for Will's character arc after the previous five episodes. I don't know what the writers were thinking.
