Romancham (2023)
9/10
A genuinely funny movie after a long time
22 April 2023
Horror comedies, nowadays are very stagnant with the same storyline and same comedies with no scares. Romancham was a surprise because I went into the world of Jibbin and his friends in the outer Banglore. The film sets its tone right from the first scene of Jibbin with the nurse. With the nurse, we also go back with Jibbin. I will leave the rest to you because writing anything further will account for spoilers. I always believe a good film is something which gives us a glimpse of it in your brain when you think of it with some scenes. Romancham does a good job in that. The first Ouja board scene, cameo by Chemban Vinod Jose, introduction of Arjun Ashokan and his dubbing for Krishna and Jesus etc are some of the scenes that I will always remember when I think of that film. Music by Sushin Shyam was extraordinary and it was the music which made the funny scenes more funny and reduced the horror side. Cinematography was really notable because most of the movie revolves around the same house and to make the audiences engaging the camera does show difference. I saw the movie two times - once in malayalam and once in tamil and I don't have anything to complain. Also, Kudos to the tamil dubbing team.

Funny and different
22 April 2023
The movie directed by debutant Balaji Mohan was a new addition to the new wave cinema that was happening during 2010's including Pizza by Karthik Suburaj, Soodhu Kavvum by Nalan Kumaraswamy and Aaaranya Kandam by Thiyagaraja Kumararaja. The film had a different storyline with a different making. I could equate the making style of this movie to The Modern family in which the characters will speak to the audience breaking the fourth wall. Here in this movie, Siddarth speaks to the audience about his experience with love, how he is coping with his love failure, why did the breakup happen. The movie was funny throughout. Music by Thaman really added to the humour. Parvathi Parvathi by Siddarth was really a catchy song. Azhaipaya Azhaipaya was melodious number with visuals depicting early stages of love with the couple wanting to exchange their love even after their college. Throughout the film, the director along with the audience exploring various reasons of boys sodhappifying in love and how could he understand the mood of women in different situations. Overall if you are considering to add it to your list of this weekend binge, I would recommend you to go for it.

Funny and engaging
22 April 2023
The film's plot was itself is different for kollywood. Especially the way they pulled the second half after the town is under a lockdown was very good. Dulquer Salman, Nazriya, Robo Shankar, Madhu were very good in their roles. Balaji Mohan as news anchor was really good comedic relief. But when the film nears climax, it becomes laggy and slow. The movie is about importance of communication and how we should use the gift of communication properly and the director manages to channel that message to the audience in a non preachy way. Dulquer - Nazriya love track was not that impactful, the movie would've been the same even if they were shown as friends. Sean Roldan's score was really good. Kadhal Ara Onnu Vizundhuchu was really a good song with great visuals. Other than that no songs stay in mind. Since the flim was shot in a hill station, cinematography did justice to the Balaji Mohan's vision. The movie was technically brilliant. Art direction, Music, cinematography, casting, editing was all good. Lastly, Balaji Mohan has once again made a comedy film with a social message but compared to Kadhalil sodhapuvadhu eppadi this film was less interesting.

A film which speaks about something which is not spoken much
6 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I was always a fan of Balu Mahendra and his students. Vetrimaaran is really is gifted filmmaker of our time. His previous ventures like Polladavan, Aadukalam, Visaranai, Asuran contained has a good balance of both art and entertainment. But in this film, there is no scope for much entertainment expect a love track, some mass scenes and two songs. Apart from that everything the film spoke was really hard hitting and raw and I am happy that people are more accepting towards films which speak politics . Because during 2000's most of the films were called mindless entertainers but after 2010 there was a new wave of cinema in Kollywood of which Vetrimaaran is a huge part. Movies started discussing more about social issues. 1st half was really trying to build the universe and 2nd half took a pace. But 2nd half had a song which was not required because most people in the theatre started using phone and it was laggy. The director established the love between Kumersan and pappa during the first half itself and during the interval they had a drift but using a song to show that the drift didn't work at least for me.

Reacher (2022– )

It was relaxing
6 April 2023
I always watch series within a short period, sometimes within a day but not more than a week. So mostly I watch mini series or watch a new series which releases new seasons every year so that I can watch it within a day. Reacher was one such series. I completed it within a day and found it engaging. It is the same detective story where hero is smarter than everyone and kills the bad guys at end single handedly but it was not boring at any point. I really like the actor who played the lead, the female police officer and the detective since they were a good team. The son of Kliner was really evil. Other than that you don't have much in the series. The emotional scenes were good. If you are into action, crime, detective genre and have a weekend in your bucket this is a perfect one to binge watch.

Good theatrical experience
4 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you are a Kamal fan, you can watch, If you are VJS fan you can watch it, If you are FaFa fan you can watch it, If you are a Lokesh Kanagaraj fan you can watch it, If you are a Suriya fan you can watch it. I think everyone will fall atleast in one of these. Jokes Apart, the film was a good theatrical experience. It had a lot of goosebumps moments. Some notable moments were VJS intro scene which was class as well as had a lot of humour in it (I could see the whole theatre laughing), Interval block, FaFa saving the chil, Agent Tina fight scene, Suriya intro scene. Also the scene that takes place in San Franciso reminded me bit of Dark knight rises scene (But it cannot match the original). Almost all characters are still in my mind which means the characters were well written. But it thought the screenplay was bit laging in first half but it takes a surge from interval. Also VJS character was not that well written and it had nothing unique but VJS by his phenomenol acting and humour aced it. Kamal sir no words, FaFa no words. If you want a good theatrical experience you should watch it. Also it is important to note the fact that Lokesh somehow tried to connect Kaithi and Vikram and bound them into a Universe. I dont know if it has scope, but the last few scenes raised my respect towards Lokesh as a writer even though screenplay is not that engaging. Also the scene in which Kamal explains about drugs and its side effects deserve a mention. Overall, watch it atleast once, if you think you didnt understand it watch it twice.

One time watchable but only if you want to waste your time
7 March 2022
Student of the year is a fantasy film in a wonderland but advertised as a rom-com drama. Plot was predictable but not the price of the clothes wore by Siddarth Malhotra, a middle class boy. If you have done all your important works and watched all the good movies and web-series , then it's up to you to watch it or not. The cast and crew did their work and they should be praised for it but writer and director didn't put much thought to the script.

It's more than a sport drama
22 July 2021
Ranjith's politics is his film. Yet again, Ranjith sir apart from giving an extraordinary film, he also speaks about the caste politics, inequality among a clan based on caste through his film. Even if you take this politics and give a watch you expression would be" It would have been a celebration if this film was released in theatre". Thanks to COVID.

Not too good Not too bad
19 June 2021
The movie is one time watchable. Something about the movie felt wrong. The conflict between hero and villan was not well established. Infact I could conmect the arc of the hero with motta siva ketta siva's hero. Like the hero is a bad ass common man who only loves money. Suddenly one day after hearing a tragic incident he becomes a good guy and fights the villan with whom he was friends with and at last doesnt kill him but gives him a funny punishment. The movie nice but.....

An Underrated masterpiece
18 May 2021
Aayutha ezhuthu is an underrated film of Maniratnam. Despite being the first tamil film to introduce hyperlink narrative style with a exciting screenplay I dont know why it was not celebrated like other Mani sir's movies like Nayagan, Thalapathy, Iruvar , Alaipayuthey etc. To this day Aayutha ezhuthu is my most fav movie done by Maniratnam.

Good one by Mari selvaraj
9 April 2021
The movie as a whole package is worth watching. Mari sir wins once again as a good writer with his simple yet hard hitting dialogues. Every characters were well written. Santosh Naraynan's score stood as a supporting pillar for the film holding it intact. Dhanush's acting did justice to his character. The good thing about the film is it moved with good pace neither becoming too slow no becoming too fast. But there were some cons (according to me). The climax could have been better. The portion that comes after 10 years could have been cut. To be frank, I think the movie couldnt satisfy all sets of audiences completely. I know most people would compare it with Pariyerum Perumal or Asuran and yes compared to those it was intense.

Miss you SSR
24 July 2020
This review is because I love SSR and also about the movie. The director did justice to the novel and its original picture. Ya it was flavored with Indian "cliches". but both Sushant's and Sanjana's acting were good.
