Rick and Morty: Fear No Mort (2023)
They went out with a BANG.
This might actually be one of the best season finales in the show! Which is pretty surprising because it isn't one of those season finales where the entire episode is canon stuff or has some huge revelations. It's just THAT good.
At first I wasn't super impressed with the idea of the fear hole but they executed it wonderfully here. Some terrifying scenes here, some absolutely hilarious scenes there (the scene where we get a whole montage about Morty growing up just for it to suddenly lead to an "I became my dad" joke made me laugh way too hard) and some actually sweet scenes in the middle. Also, Rick and Diane were only hanging out in Morty's head since Rick wasn't in the hole, but it was still nice to see what could have been.
This episode was written by Heather Anne Campbell and so far every episode she's written have been among the best episodes from their seasons, so she really deserves more praise and I hope she will stay around for more seasons to come.
As for the season as a whole, it was one of the most inconsistent seasons of the show but its best episodes were also the best Rick and Morty has been in years so I will put it right in the middle. 5 < 4 < 1 < 7 < 3 < 6 < 2.
Rick and Morty: Mort: Ragnarick (2023)
Now THIS is a great episode!
After two weeks of mediocre or bad episodes I was really hoping they would finish the season with some great episodes so I could still look back on season 7 as a good season regardless, and this episode delivered.
Turning Valhalla into a tower defense game and "The Pope" into basically a roguelike boss were some amazing ideas that were executed very well, there were so many jokes that made me laugh out loud, I like the way they included Bigfoot in this episode after teasing his appearance 6 weeks ago (There was a future-seeing alien who predicted that Rick would get killed by the Bigfoot) and I'm especially glad we finally got an episode with a B plot.
I still think episode 6 (Rickfending Your Mort) was funnier overall but this was a very solid episode.
Rick and Morty: Rise of the Numbericons: The Movie (2023)
What the hell was this?
I am a huge fan of Rick and Morty and absolutely disagree with people saying the show has been ruined. Seasons 6 and 7 have both had lots of fantastic episodes that make the show still worth watching weekly in my eyes. This wasn't one of them.
There's no Rick, Morty is a background character, the pacing absolutely sucks, the constant puns are repetitive and unfunny, the characters are uninteresting and lots of things just sorta happen for no reason. I don't understand why this show has been so obsessed with making old and unimportant characters like Mr. PBH and Water T the main characters of entire episodes recently but they just can't seem to make it work. This entire episode relies on puns, complete randomness and nothing else, almost none of that clever writing we've come to expect from Rick and Morty is present here.
I REALLY want to be able to tell people that season 7 is a good season overall and not just season 5 all over again so I hope they'll stick the landing with last two episodes.
Rick and Morty: Unmortricken (2023)
One of the best of the entire show (MASSIVE spoilers)
I don't understand how they managed to put so much stuff in this episode and make it work so well but they absolutely did it. Evil Morty's backstory, the reveal that Rick Prime killed every Diane, Rick and Evil Morty teaming up, the showdown and Rick Prime's death were all done incredibly well and they somehow still managed to make me laugh out loud multiple times with all of this serious stuff going on. Instant classic, just like last week's episode. This season might have had a slow start but it's absolutely getting better. Can't wait to see where they will go from here now that one of the major villains just wants nothing to do with our characters and the other is dead.
