Kunju Daivam (2018)
Graciously incongruent !
Whenever I watch a movie, I do so with an open mind. Even so, sometimes a particular movie will somewhat disturb us due to one or two nonsensical aspect involved in it. Everything about Kunju Daivam is great, well, almost. Adhish acted well without any kind of overly imbued pretensions and convinced us of his true intent within the story and as depicted by his acting. The other stars also did well and especially Soolapani who plays his grandfather in the movie. Adhish was able to convince us that he is a quintessential little "payyans" growing up in the Kerala environment. Joju George was himself and the other actors. The natural environment and scenery is depicted clearly and vividly to the point that we almost begin to believe that we are in the movie.
The very idea of any movie is that it asks us to suspend our beliefs for a period of time that we are watching it. Within that period of time, anything that happens in the movie is to be believed if we are to enjoy the movie. It is exactly here, that the wound that is the issue of suspension of one's beliefs, seems to get cut open again. How many of us know of a little boy who has been able to convince a grown man to give up his kidney (just because he has two of them or just because he thinks he is good for nothing or perhaps because he needs the money)! How many times have you seen a little kid ask a priest to donate his kidney? These little nagging mistakes or discordant aspects take away from an otherwise beautiful movie. Sidharth Siva was quite convincing as a Machiavellian priest. We see too many of them all over the place and in most Churches. The movie is fresh and there seems to be a bit of juxtaposition of the ethos of a woman whose husband is away from her, earning money in the Gulf and a mother who is having quite a bit of difficulty trying to find money to treat her only daughter.
Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020)
Flat Face - Jahnvi Kapoor
Gunjan Saxena was definitely the Kargil Girl but Jahnvi Kapoor cannot depict one even in the movie. She is as flat faced and expression less as Sunny Deol in his heydays. Almost everything in the movie is dove-tailed to make Jahnvi Kapoor look like an actress but she cannot depict any expression on her flat face. This proves one thing and that is....whatever happens, acting cannot ever be considered a hereditary aspect. Acting cannot be passed down from a parent to kids, father to son or mother to daughter. People still try though, just look at Shruti Haasan / Akshara Haasan two of the most famous "chinless" wonders, after the original 'Vindu Dara Singh'. After undergoing tons of Plastic surgery they were somehow able to present themselves as actresses ( if they can be called that at all). Gunjan Saxena while real is the kind of person who should be emulated and revered for what she did for Indiaand IAF. 2 stars only because it does not depict the truths of Gunjan Saxena.
