Judas and the Black Messiah (2021)
Good acting but poor script/directing/editing
I watched JATBM wanting to like it and I did to a point. The main cast were all good in their roles but were let down by a lame script, poor directing and bewildering editing. What should've been an exciting story was bogged down into what was at times a confusing and boring movie.
The Great North (2021)
Another solid Fox cartoon.
GN doesn't break any new ground but who cares. If you like Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers, etc. you'll like GN. Solid premiere episode, characters and stories will probably be predictable but entertaining, voice actors are all perfectly cast.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
What? Why?
Usually a fan of zombie movies but... If there was a point to this movie it was lost on me. Boring, slow with a plot that went NOWHERE. BTW, why is Tom Waits an actor?
The Nightingale (2018)
Very graphic but interesting movie
The Nightingale provides a window into 1800s colonial Tasmania. It was a rough time and place and the movie reflects it in it's treatment of the indigenous people and women. Good acting and plot throughout but it stumbles a bit at the end.
Lucky Day (2019)
Bad acting, dumb plot, mess of a movie.
Really disliked this movie. Not sure what they were going for but they failed. The black humor falls flat, none of the characters were interesting and the plot was nonsense. REALLY disliked the art show subplot. Skip this garbage movie.
The Way Back (2020)
Decent movie, unsatisfying ending.
Enjoyed most of the movie. Affleck and the entire cast were good including the members of the basketball team. The ending threw me for a loop. It wasn't bad but it was unexpected and not very satisfying. Also the dead from cancer kid plotline seemed unnecessary.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Good cast, uneven storyline
I enjoyed the performances of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel as well as the supporting cast of Jackson, Law, Lashana Lynch and Ben Mendelson. The Skrull people and storyline had a Star Trek TNG vibe which I also liked. Unfortunately as a whole I found the movie confusing and poorly written. The motivations of the "bad guys" was unclear and the origin story was all over the place and didn't even make sense by the end.
Class Action Park (2020)
Mildly interesting
I enjoyed the old footage of Action Park in its heyday. It reminded me of places I went to growing up in the 70s and 80s. The actual movie not so much. The people reminiscing about AP were mostly unlikable and seemed to exaggerate the dangers of the park. All parks have injuries and AP didn't seem that outside the norm for the time.
El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
Really good movie!
Aaron Paul does a great job in the lead role. EC ties up several loose ends and it was cool seeing alot of great BB supporting characters.
An American Pickle (2020)
Mostly good Seth Rogen movie.
Really enjoyed the first half of the movie. Seth Rogen excellent in dual role. Movie kind of goes off the rails in the middle with the whole pickle business and billboard removal storyline. Gets back on track at the end.
Wild Card (2015)
Forgettable Jason Statham movie
Typical Jason Statham action, JS plays the same character as every other one of his movies and that's ok if you like JS(and I do). Problem is the lame predictable story and boring supporting characters. Exception is Stanley Tucci who is always good but his role is small.
Stan & Ollie (2018)
Coogan and Reilly excellent, movie ok.
Coogan and Reilly are spot on in their portrayal of Laurel and Hardy. There are some really enjoyable scenes of the two in and out of character. Overall though I found the plot and supporting cast mostly uninteresting. Ok movie that probably nobody was asking for.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Margot Robbie great! Movie only fair.
Margot Robbie is terrific AGAIN in Birds of Prey as she was in Suicide Squad. And like Suicide Squad Birds of Prey is not all that good. Confusing, uninteresting plot, hopefully they'll make a Harley Quinn movie worthy of Margot Robbie's talents but this isn't it.
The Old Guard (2020)
Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne great! Movie only ok.
The 2 leading ladies are beautiful and BAD. Male co-stars and plot only so-so. No explanation of how they received immortality and the storyline doesn't really go anywhere except to set up possible sequels. Watch for Theron and Layne.
Safe (2012)
For better or worse a typical Jason Statham movie
Great action and great fight scenes, pretty good acting throughout. The story itself is weak and implausible. The actors are better than the dialogue they're given to work with. Overall if you're a JS fan you'll like Safe.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
EXTREMELY dry humor but funny movie.
Different from the tv show but just as funny. The humor is dry as a bone but it works. All the characters were funny, Total deadpan comedy.
Cabaret (1972)
A bit dated but GREAT movie.
Liza Minelli is amazing. So beautiful and so talented. Great performance by Liza and all the music numbers too.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Decent acting, uninteresting movie.
Mixed feelings about Jojo Rabbit. Enjoyed all the individual characters, JJR cast well, all the actors were good in their roles. My problem was the uninteresting story, the humor mostly falls flat especially the Hitler/Nazi jokes. Expected more from JJR, was disappointed.
Da 5 Bloods (2020)
Great movie and great message
Really enjoyable movie with great performances throughout. My (white) dad is a Vietnam war combat veteran and has always said that black G.I.s were disproportionately assigned to line companies. The messages in Spike Lee movies may be uncomfortable to hear but you can't argue with the facts as he presents them.
