Science Dumbed Down
29 May 2014
I can literally watch an episode of this show and NEVER laugh, smile, chuckle. The show was created by the same guy who made "Two and a Half Men" (need I say more?) and probably written by the same folks. They have little knowledge of science and basically wrap up the same lame one-liners in pseudo-scientific jargon that has little to do with the humor. For the most part, the characters are totally unbelievable. I don't think there are any scientist in the world that are as smart as they are supposed to be who act so oblivious to how the world works. Sheldon needs to be in mental counseling as depicted. He is VERY annoying and you wonder why the other roommates don't shove him to the curb. There is also no way in hell the girl next door would have anything to do with them. This show is just more of the same from CBS, the number one network of retirement centers everywhere.

Penn and Teller Missed on This One
23 May 2009
Specifically regarding second hand smoke portion of the show....sure they make the claim that it doesn't "significantly" cause cancer in non-smokers. To me, that's only half the point. Smoking is a disruptive and invasive activity. When you go into a building where people are smoking it stinks and the smell gets all in your clothing and your hair. It can cause allergic reactions and possibly worse for those people with breathing problems. So who has more rights...the rights of people to burn paper and plant material so they can get a fix or the rights of people to breath clean, fresh air?

In the show, one smoker compared smoking bans to banning cake....wrong! He can eat all the cake he wants to. Unless he smears it on my face and on my clothes I'm not going to smell it, taste it, or get sick because of it. It's just a really really bad comparison. Let's compare it to burning incense. Even in smoking establishments, I would not be allowed to just light up a few candles and set them on my table to stink up the joint. I'd get kicked out.

What about other types of disruptive behavior; noise pollution, really bad BO, being insulting....to me these don't come anywhere close to how bad smoking is but in all three situations the owner of the establishment has the right to ask these folks to leave his business. I really think Penn and Teller focused solely on the limited cancer research to make their show and didn't even address the actual situation....the act of smoking should not interfere with the rights of non-smoking.

Smoking is an action, it's a behavior; non-smoking is not....people don't actively non-smoke. I think people have more of a right to clean air than smokers have a right to make the air I breath and my clothing smell nasty. If a private business owner wants to allow smoking, then he's going to have to deal with non-smokers not shopping there.

For More Laid Back Moviegoers that Enjoy Good Action
22 April 2005
I didn't really have very big expectations for this film when I rented it, but I found it very thrilling and enjoyable. The action sequences were excellent and I found the acting to be well done. I must say that I really don't understand the negative comments that have been made about this movie. Perhaps this movie is better left to those who don't find the need to tear apart every single frame looking for perceived errors. I think if you're calm enough to just enjoy a movie for it's own sake and not expect it to follow every single rule in the known universe, you'll come out really liking it. It's like complaining that the USS Enterprise makes noise when it goes to warp cause there's no noise in space....folks...it's a movie, not Nova. Personally, I think it would be stupid to watch a spaceship blast into warp in complete silence. Any why no complaints that we don't have the technical know-how to make a ship like the Enterprise. When does it end? Give the film a chance....if you find yourself making the plot holes bigger than they should be, turn on PBS.

King of the Hill (1997–2010)
Yes, this show is accurate AND funny.
17 October 2002
Being a native Texan, I can tell you that this show is right on the money. People like Hank Hill and his friends DO exist, and not just in our state. Not everyone fits into this group, but I would say a large majority of the "native" population do. Anyone who says otherwise has just never visited some of the smaller communities. It reminds me of my youth and the neighborhood I grew up in, which is probably why I like this show so much.

As stated earlier, many of the jokes are very subtle and would be hard for some non-natives to get, such as Bobby going to Tom Landry Middle School. Others took me a long time to figure out myself. For instance, the name of the teenage girl living with the Hill's is Luanne Platter. In many southern states, we have a chain of cafeterias called Luby's where you can order the "Luanne" Platter. It made me feel stupid that I never noticed it before.

To sum up, the show is funny and great. As a native, I feel it pokes fun at our idiosyncrasies while showing our greatest strengths. I hope it lasts for quite awhile.

Much better than I Imagined
3 July 2002
I must admit that I was completely baffled by the whole Harry Potter craze that has been stirring for several years now. I primarily viewed these books as for teenagers and thought it was strange that so many adults had started reading them too. It seemed to me that the whole witches and wizards at school things had already been done to death, especially in the UK. When the movie came out, I really had no desire to see it.

Last week, I finally decided to rent the movie and just watch it since so many people thought I was nuts for not having seen it sooner. To my utter astonishment, I actually liked it. The visuals are fantastic, the acting is top notch, and the music, well, how can you go wrong with John Williams. Daniel Radcliffe shines as the at first downtrodden, but spirited and ever helpful Harry Potter.

I did not find this movie disjointed or as some have claimed, wandering about going from story to story. There are three main story lines and I followed them clearly throughout the movie. It makes me wonder if some of the people writing these reviews every went to college. College is a sequence of going to class, walking the halls, going to watch games, sleeping, etc. If you have trouble following the scenes, I suggest you watch again and pay closer attention.

All in all, it was a wonderful experience and I hope to see the future films at the theater. I would also like to see Mr. Radcliffe in more roles and just hope he can escape being typecast as Harry Potter.

This a great movie for people who aren't made of stone.
23 June 2002
This is a good movie. Sure, it won't win any awards, but it's still a lot funnier than many more successful films out now. Some people seem to have a problem with mixing humor and Alzheimers. My own grandfather had this horrid disease and eventually passed away a few years back. Does this make me feel that this movie is less funny? Not for a moment. The reason is that nothing bad ever happens to Dom Ameche's character. He sets up Tom Selleck time and time again for painful slapstick gags, but he always comes out squeaky clean.

I found the writing witty with some good one-liners and great character interaction. On a believeability scale, it rates pretty low, but it is plausable. I saw no plot holes that others have mentioned, but it's easy to see plot holes when you already know the concept of the story, unlike the characters who are in the dark and haven't seen a "trailer" of their lives. The cast is also great, btw.

All in all, this movie is a great distraction, but if you haven't smile or laughed in awhile and you think South Park is immature, you probably won't like this film. If you do see it, just remind yourself that they are not making fun of Alzheimers, they are poking fun at the misadventures one man has trying to take care of his aging parents while trying to retain his own sanity.

Nothing can save this stinker.
2 January 2002
I read that this movie was supposed to be a view of a typical American family. If the writer agrees with this, I am so glad not to be a part of his screwed up brood. The Addams Family is more realistic. This has got to be the most mixed up, convoluted piece of garbage I've seen. The only redeeming value being Kevin Spacey's performance. Why he chose to waste such talent on this movie, I will never understand. And the garbage bag scene? Who wrote that? Lame, really lame. 4 of 10 stars. (The fact that this movie is #17 in the list of greatest films is just wrong.)

Utterly Amazing
19 December 2001
I'm sure many other moviegoers are raving about this film as much as I am. I just want to congratulate the cast and crew of "The Lord of the Rings" and wish them success in any other ventures they pursue. You guys deserve it. And to all the movie studios out there, this is how to make a great picture. Give more control to the director and allow them to make the film as good and it can be. Mr. Jackson, you blew me away. Thanks so much for giving the world such a wonderful addition to Tolkien's legacy. Now, when will the DVD's be release. I got my check book out already. Thanks again!!! This movie should win the Oscar for best picture and director, without a doubt.

First and still best of the Ripley shows!
30 November 2001
I enjoyed just about everything in this show. The stories were great, the music was fantastic, and who can beat Jack Palance. It was Must See TV for my entire family. I really like the balance of subjects and the little small factoids before commercial breaks. Hard to find this one now, although I think the Sci-Fi channel did some reruns for awhile. The new Believe it of Not shows don't hold a candle to this one. They only show gross and disgusting stuff. How long will it take tv execs to realize we don't want to watch someone shove red hot needles in their eyes or eat live rats while we're eating dinner. Gross! Why can't they be like the original. I miss you, Ripley!

It Really Is Not Just a Walk in the Park!!!
18 July 2001
I must first say that I went to this movie with anticipation, but also was a bit of restraint. I had heard from early reviews that the story line was simplistic and too far fetched to amount to anything. What I got from the movie blew me away! The script is simple, but hardly without plot twists and surprises. The action is crisp and clear with hardly any of those momemts when the camera is so close to the action you can't tell what's happening. It's as if they took the best elements from the first two films and just layered them on in this one. After a few minutes I totally forgot about trying to see which dinosaurs were real and which were CGI and just lost myself.

The acting was excellent, including Sam Neill's reprisal of Dr. Alan Grant. He added the familiar link that was needed to really bring you back to the first storyline. Trevor Morgan, the young actor who plays Eric Kerby, really shines in his role. Michael Jeter and William H. Macy are good in every role they play, no surprise there. Kudos to the entire cast and crew. Great work!

At one and a half hours, they concluded the film perfectly and left me wanting more, but very satisfied. If you liked the first movie and the second, you will squeal like a raptor for this third installment. Don't walk, RUN to this movie.

If Gone With the Wind is your favorite movie, rent the Whales of August sit down in a comfy rocking chair, and get a nice, small glass of tea to sip. Jurassic Park III is not your...ahm...cup of tea.
