The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror XXXI (2020)
Season 32, Episode 4

2020 just keeps getting worse
2 November 2020
The writers had a year or more to work on this episode and this is best they could do? The first segment resorted to 3D animation to distract us from a story devoid of laughs. The second segment was simply devoid of a well developed story. And the third segment, well if Rick and Morty don't roast The Simpsons for ripping them off, I'll be disappointed in Roiland and Harmon. I look forward to THOH every year and this was huge let down.

Deadwood wannabe

I don't get all the love for this show. It's maybe a bit above average. The cinematography is good and has good "look. Acting is pretty good with one glaring exception. Jeff Daniels is really hard to watch. His portrayal of a psychotic outlaw reminds me more of Lee Marvin in Paint Your Wagon than say Gene Hackman in Unforgiven. The dialogue is decent but plot lines are overly familiar and kinda choppy. Worse though is the story just plods along painfully slowly. And then there are the odd inexplicable characters that just seem forced (John Doe and the naked widow). Oh well, there's worse shows on Netflix. But there are definitely better ones.

Plodding and unconvincing

While the acting is maybe the best part of the movie (with the exception of Orlando Bloom's accent), it's still only just ok. But the writing and direction are what really let this movie down. The dialogue is clichéd and the foreshadowing is clumsy and telegraphs virtually every plot turn. Don't have high expectations going in and you may not be too disappointed. It's a movie that's probably best when watched while you're doing other things like surfing the web, or folding your laundry.

Narcissistic self promotion

Every other review here hits the nail on the head with how bad this show is. It's produced, in part, by the husband and wife and they're obviously in way over their heads. I'm sure they're hoping this will be expanded beyond the app and make it onto broadcast tv. But at this rate they'll be lucky if they make it through one season without MT pulling the plug. But hey, they'll still have their mediocre car business, a coffee distribution and whatever the hell other irons in the fire going for them.
