Remake so much than the original that it now more famous than the original
2 July 2017
What makes this movie great is the performances of Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell. They are both great actors and both have been in great movies, but they have never been better. First changing Russell's character from a man to woman is brilliant. But most importantly the fast paced scene's between Grant and Russell, many of those ad-lib by the two actors doing some of their best work ever. It is rare that you see two acting legends at the top of their games.

Veronica Mars (2014)

Never watched the TV show. Never was a fan. But really liked the movie
15 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I have heard about the TV show Veronica Mars, and heard it was a good one. Never had the time to see it. But heard about the show's rabid fans and the kick-starter campaign to get the movie done. Am a Star Trek fan and understand the desire for more.

I was very happy to find that the movie is really worth seeing. Kudos to those kick-starter fans. The show must have been great. The characters are appealing and there are some nice cameos. The movie holds up for people who do not know the show, since it worked for me and I have never seen a episode.

The movie starts off with the now older more mature Veronica Mars about to ascend the corporate ladder. At job interview she asked describe the old her, and ends the description with saying it is not her any more. Like Michael she sucked back in. I do not want to put in any spoilers, but let's just say she takes an interesting trip down memory-lane.

George Pal's Atlantis
2 June 2013
This movie does not have any known stars. I think the most well known is the guy who played the Chief on Get Smart. But conceptually this is a great movie. It captures the imagination. It plays into the stories of the advanced people of the famous lost continent. A place with advanced science in the ancient world. But such strength becomes their downfall. This move was made during the cold war when many thought the A-bomb could lead to our downfall. It also shows how even with such advanced knowledge, the people of Atlantis act just like people. Such themes are common in science fiction and fantasy of the era, but they are brought together nicely in this movie. Also this movie has the great special effects of its director, George Pal. And those are worth the price of admission any day.

Back to warp speed - fans should not read reviews
20 May 2013
I am a long time Star Trek fan and I loved it. For non fans it explains the relationship between Kirk and Spock, and it shows how the smart farm boy matures into Captain Kirk. For Trek fans the movie pulls at the heart strings that make wanting the next although unlikely installment from this creative team. I would say more about the plot, but it would ruin it for fans. My advise to fans is not to read reviews, and see it and live it. To non fans, welcome aboard. This is a ride you will not want to get off of. And this is a good way to rediscover this classic. This is a show that people of the Mad Men era would love too.

Undiscovered Gem
21 February 2013
This was the third movie I watched on a plane, and was shocked to discover how good it was. This is a really good movie that should have gotten more attention. I suppose it got lost in all the noise around the Twilight movie series ending and the Presidential election. This is a timeless movie about fathers, daughters and baseball. You do not have to like baseball to like this movie. It is closer to chick flick, but is it much better then those. The characters are brought to life with great performances by Amy Adams and Clint Eastwood. These are not cookie cutter characters as is true in most movies. And there are strong supporting characters played by John Goodman and Justin Timberlake. This is worth seeing.

Jack Reacher (2012)

Cruise Rules - Critics are wrong
22 December 2012
I am not sure what movie the professional critics saw, but it could not have been the one I saw. Because if it is the same one, the critics are dead wrong. This is a good enjoyable movie.

First, I was ready to hate this movie. When I heard that Tom Cruise was playing Jack Reacher, I thought it was one of the worst casting ideas ever. I am a huge fan of Lee Child's books. I have read them all. Jack Reacher is physically tall man. And Tom Cruise just could not play that role. Now, I like Cruise's movies. I just did not think he could pull that role. Boy was I wrong. Cruise, while not as tall as Reacher, makes the role his own. I guess he knows a character he can play. He is not Ethan Hunt from Mission Impossible here. He is Jack Reacher. The character is very true to the feel of the book.

This movie is well shot. Well acted, and has really good action scenes. It as has a surprise cameo deep into the movie. Rosamund Pike is solid in her role as is the rest of the cast. I plan to recommend this movie to anyone that asks.

way over rated - some spoilers
9 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I am a huge Batman fan and love the other two movies. But this one sucks. The only good thing about it is Ann Hathaway. First most people see this for the action scenes, but they are too few. In between them are long boring useless talking scenes. This movie could have been an hour shorter. Second the plot does not make sense, but who sees Batman for the plot. Third everyone seems to know he is batman.

*** spoiler alert ***

Even worse everyone seems to be able to outsmart batman. He is supposed to be a super hero with no superpowers, but he is supposed to be able out smart the villains. He can be self destructive. He has bad moods, but he is supposed to out smart the bad guys. It seems to me that after the success of the last movie, Christopher Nolan got to do anything he wanted to do, and every one needs an editor. The actions scenes are good, but there are not enough of them. Instead it is filled with mind numbing talk about batman's feelings. This is not a very good movie. No wonder the website rottentomatos took down early comments.

The Postman (1997)

Highly under-rated, way better than Waterworld
15 April 2012
I did not know if this movie ever came out in the theaters. If it did, then it must have been for only a brief period. I saw this movie on cable, and I was shocked to find a Kevin Costner movie that I have never heard of. I also was shocked to find it is really a good movie. I suppose the problem is that it came out after Waterworld, and that movie was so bad nobody want to risk money on another Costner post-apocalypse movie. However this is a much better movie than Waterworld. It is more like Dances with Wolves set in a post - apocalyptic era. The performances are all strong. Costner's character evolves through the movie. This one is worth a try.

The Wonderful World of Disney: Annie (1999)
Season 3, Episode 5

The best film version
7 April 2012
This was a Disney made for TV movie version of the Broadway musical Annie. It is by far the best version on video. The cast led by Victor Garber and Kathy Bates is fantastic. Audra McDonald plays Grace Farrel. It is very obvious from her performance here why she won three Tony awards before she turned 30. Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cummings also are great as well. Clearly, you will never see a cast this good on Broadway. There is also a cameo appearance by Andrea McArdle, Broadway's original Annie. She still has the charisma she displayed as Annie.

With such a strong cast it is almost impossible for Disney not to make a good movie. However in 1982, the first film version of the play was made with also an all-star cast, and it failed. This TV-movie succeeds. The stage and look are wonderful. Kudos to Disney.

Thunderbirds (2004)

I love the Thunderbirds, but hate this movie
26 February 2012
I grew up watching the Thunderbirds. Watching the DVD versions show that they are more slowly paced than shows today. But, the Thunderbirds are cool. Even though they are just puppets. Miss Penelope was the coolest of them all. I think she was based on Sylvia Anderson. I am writing so much about the original, because there is so little to say about the movie. How they could talk something so cool and make it so bad is hard to imagine. There are wonderful actors in this. The story is worse then any of the original shows. It lacks humor, romance, action, adventure and coolness. How could this happen. All they had to do is take the best of the original stories. And why make Tin Tin a major character and do so little with Lady Penelope? I saw this movie twice with the hope that they would make another that would live up to the original.

There can be only one and that is the original Highlander
8 January 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This is probably the second best of the movies, but it is a long way down from the original. All Highlander stories are best when they interweave stories from the past and the current day. This movie does not do this well. Also, spoiler alert!!! Do not read further if you do not want to read the spoilers.

The plot lines set in the present day in this movie are almost the same as the present day section of the first movie. In both movies, The evil immortal hires a prostitute, terrifies somebody by driving wildly, Connor falls in love, Connor warns the woman to stay away, etc Also this movie lacks enough action scenes. Mario Van Peebles does a nice job of the playing the bad guy, but he is not nearly as scary as the Kurgan. Christopher Lambert seems to be doing this for paycheck and looks like he is just going through the motions. The script has many holes in it and does not seem to make much sense even in the Highlander world much less the real world.

Not that bad
28 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This as a TV movie of the week held was really not bad. How bad can it be with Lew Ayers? Glenn Corbett, Star Trek's TOS Zefrem Cochran, makes a good leading man. Sharon Archer is appealing as well. Cameron Mitchel make a great bad guy. The problem is that you can not see how this would make an interesting weekly TV show. Such a show would be set in a make believe police state that does not seem to have much of an philosophy. There are only two people out there to help him. And he does not want to end the police state. He just wants to get home. He does not seem to have any compassion for the people with the exception of Sharon Archer.

The best Captain America to date
27 October 2011
Unfortunately, I did not get to see this in the theaters, but I just saw in on my i-pad. I have been a Cap fan for all my life. I have seen every version of Captain America. This movie is the best of the lot by far. Some say it was predictable. The story has been out for so long how can it be anything but a bit familiar. But it was version well told. Also I think Stanly Tucchi and Tommy Lee Jones take the movie a the next level. Bringing out that Rogers strength of character comes from when he was a smaller man is highly important, and this is what makes Captain America different. He is the most compassionate of super heroes, and the one with the greatest sense of duty.

Great update to a classic
22 December 2010
I am surprised there are so few reviews for this show. It was short lived, but it was great. The producers tried to update the Tracy-Hepburn classic and succeeded with a charm and grace thanks to a strong cast. Blythe Danner and Ken Howard had real chemistry. They both were just coming up as actors, but their talent is obvious. The other reviewer missed the best scene of the episode he hated. In the end, Blythe Danner's character goes back to the restaurant that refuses to seat women wearing pants, and she takes her pants off. It is okay, because she is wearing a shirt dress. Her husband applauds her actions and the patrons give her a standing ovation. The ending was a clever funny way to make a point. In another episode they did a dangerous copy of a scene from the original movie, and they pulled it off. This show was canceled because it was too smart and well acted for TV of the day. This was the Brady Bunch era after all. Because of this show I decided to watch everything Danner and Howard did, and I have been greatly rewarded for following their careers.

Who knew Jackie Chan could act?
13 June 2010
I suppose the original Karate kid proved to audiences that Pat Morita could do something other than comedy. In this new Karate Kid, Jackie Chan proves he can be a serious actor. The smiling jovial marshal arts master type that made Jackie Chan a star is not in this movie at all. Yes, he does fight, and yes, he does not disappoint. What you never have seen before is Jackie Chan playing a tortured down and out character. And surprisingly he pulls it off brilliantly. Jaden Smith shows once again that he can act, but he has actually played more dramatic rolls in his short career then Jackie Chan. This movie first shows that Jackie Chan can act, and second that Jaden Smith has star potential.

While, I love the original movie, this new movie is better. The original was a great b-movie that reached cult status. This new one is much broader in scope. It shows the cult clash between east and west that was never in the first movie. Of course that movie was set in LA, and this new on in China. The film takes full advantage of being shot in China. The new movie also shows the clash within China between more modern and old fashion.

Star Trek (2009)

Awesome
9 May 2009
Let's just say I went to my first Star Trek convention in the late 70's. I have been greatly disappointed with some of the Star Trek movies the past. However, this so-called re-boot is amazing. One could not ask for a better one. It does make many references to the original TV series and some of the movies. But non-trekkers will not notice t hem, most importantly these reference do not slow the movie down. This is warp driven Star Trek for a new generation of fans. It embodies the spirit of the original, but it much more fast paced. The new cast has great chemistry, and leave you wanting more. If only they had those effects in the 1960's.

Great homage to 1950's "B" movies
18 October 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I did not see this theaters, but just saw on DVD. Before seeing it I have heard all the negative things about it. I think they are mostly wrong. The original movies are all based on "B" movies of the 1930's. This more modern Indy is based on the "B" movies of the 1950's. It has everything, Indy fighting Russian spies, shots of F-86 fights, giant ants, nuclear tests, rebels without a cause, drag racing, the red scare, and more. All this is great, and it is all in the first half of the movie. Tieing up the Indy loose end are great as well. Bringing back Karen Allan as Marion is a master stroke. However, not enough it explained about the greater mystery. Who are the beings with the crystal skulls. In most "B" movies of the 1950's they were aliens trying to take over the Earth. Some were comments on the Red Scare like the thing. We know that Indy Jones thinks the aliens might be alien Indys. It would have been nice he was able to use that knowledge to save everyone or gain some insight. Also Indy does not really find the temple. He just knows how to follow his crazy friend played by John Hurt. Indiana Jones in the other movies is not just a thug. He solves mysteries. He just does not stand on the work of crazy friends. The critics who say this movie is not as realistic as the earlier one, clearly do not remember them very well. The creatures coming out of the Arc, pulling beating hearts out of people with just your hand, 800 year old knights, these are all in the more realistic Indy movies. But this movie takes you to another place, and it is fun. Maybe not as much fun as some of the earlier movies, but it is fun. Therefore it succeeds.

The last of the great Hollywood musicals
28 June 2008
This is really the last of the great Hollywood musicals. Yes, there have been musical since then, but this is the last that used such talent of the previous age including Director Gene Kelly and Barbara Streisand at her peak. This movie did not get great reviews in it's day, because it came out the year after MLK and RFK were killed and at the peak of the Vietnam war. Happy care free establishment movies were not in vague in those days. Had the movie come out just three years earlier, when work on it first started, it would have been a big hit. It would have been part of the era of Mary Poppins. But instead it came out the same year as MASH and Love Story. The era of the anti-hero. This movie stacks up well against movie musicals prior to 1970. Poducation numbers at the scale of this movie may never be seen again without CGI, but never this this many live actors and dancers. The high points of this movie are whenever Streisand or Michael Crowford are on the screen. However the supporting cast is amazing. Especially, Broadway legend Tommy Tune in his first movie. Do yourself a favor and give this movie another chance. Hopefully the short scene of this movie that cam be seen in Wall*E will ignite more interest in it.

One of My Favorite Movies
26 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Mel Brooks wrote this based on his experiences working as a junior comedy writer on Sid Caesar's "Your show of shows." The first time I saw this movie I laughed from beginning to end. Mark Lynn Baker plays the Benji Stone (the young Brooks) whose real name is Stoneberg. He has the right innocence for role. He gives a great performance. But this movie is Peter O'Toole's. He plays a larger then life Earol Flynn character. He is drunk and about to be thrown out of the country by the IRS. He teaches young Stone the difference between the man and the star, and how stardom sometimes overtakes the man's own identity. One of high point of the movie is when Baker takes O'toole have dinner in his mother's apartment in Brooklyn. O'toole also coaches Baker on getting the girl of his dreams, played by Jessica Harper. One of the great scenes has Mark Lynn Baker trying to teach Harper how to tell a joke. All this takes place with the backdrop of late 1950's television. A time where TV was still a novelty. Every scene makes you at least smile, and most make you laugh out loud. Richard Benjiman show great skill as a director even though this one of his earliest films. I guess all those years as an actor paid off behind the camera as well.

Who would think a tweens at Disney would make a good martial arts movie
13 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Because it is Disney, this is not in least bloody, but it is a good martial arts film. There is good action, and the cast is surprisingly strong. The story revolves around a young high school student who is valley girl. This character shows that Brenda Song can act beyond the suite life of Zack and Cody. There is a strong supporting cast. This valley girl is destined to become a kung fu warrior. Her guild is Chinese monk, who she transforms into an American teenager. Is the played by the same actor who played the warlords son in Tom Cruise's samurai movie. The story is all about find yourself and benefits of hard work. But all this is intermingled with really pretty good fight scenes. I hope there is another.

Do not Confuse this with any other Planet of the Apes sequels this is a GREAT FILM
1 January 2008
Warning: Spoilers
**** This has spoilers **** This is a great film, and has been a victim of it's own success. The 1968 film is first a great story. Second it is a great allegory about our society. Third it is a great drama. Fourth is a great example of story telling. You are first introduced to main character on board an futuristic spaceship that can travel near light speed. Then you are led to think they crashed landed on a desert planet on the way home. At this point you find out the main character hates human society. He became an astronaut to find something better than man. Then you find that the primitive humans seem to populate the planet, and the astronauts think they will be running the place in six months. Then you find out apes run the planet and treat humans as we treat apes. As the astronaut learns about the ape society, he begins to yearn for the human society he hates. We also see parallels that comment on our own. You can see Rod Serling's hand in the script. The twist at the end - that the planet is Earth in the distant future makes the astronaut hate human society, that he has just begun to want, even more.

If you follow the story of this film, all the sequels are impossible. The people who launched the space mission would never had sent the rescue mission of the second movie, because they would have know the spaceship would return in the future when they all were long dead. In this film they hint that the human society destroys itself, and then their trained ape servants took over.

The Corner Bar (1972–1973)

One of kind
2 August 2007
This show had a lot of charm, and an interesting history. This was a summer replacement series that ran on ABC. The exterior shot was of a bar across the street from the ABC studios in New York and the characters were loosely based on the bar's staff. The bar was a well known ABC hang out. At one time the bar even had an ABC extension. The bar's owner in the early days of ABC would lend the former NBC blue network money to meet the payroll. Some say that he also lent ABC to money to cover President Kennedy's funeral. It is said he lent the some $20,000 in cash, and he told them, "I am giving you cash, and I want it back in cash." The owner was hard drinking Irish man with foul mouth that lived in the poshest of streets, fifth ave. He was such a character they turned him into this show, but toned down for TV.

Knocked Up (2007)

Just went to a preview and it sucks
14 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is full of frat house humor, which works for me most of the time. I love classics like American Pie, Something about Mary, etc. I also can enjoy a great many movies that my wife things are stupid. But this movie is so unbelievable it hurts. I know that you are supposed to suspend belief, but this movie asks too much of the audience. I can believe that a hot chick can end up in a one night stand with a loser. But why would she want to have his kid? Is she some anti-abortion nut, or does she just love kids. We don't know, because the movie never explains it. What does this career woman have in common with a crude guy who never has had a job? Don't know because it is not in the movie. The movie does have some funny moments. The actors are all good, but the script sucks. The story is not well told. Also, all the guys in this movie smoke pot and other drugs, and the ome woman gets drunk once. I know guy act like this, but so do women.

A Failed Attempt for Disney to return to Science Fiction
27 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Considering Disney won the first Oscar for special effects for the Science Fiction classic "Forbidden Planet," this movie put Disney out of the space adventure movie business. Special Effects: First you have to consider that this movie came out two years after "Star Wars," and the special effects of "Black Hole" look like something just ahead of "Lost in Space." The cute robots Vincent and Bob would look more at home on a Saturday morning cartoon. The other robots look like guys in robot suits that could learn something from "Lost in Space." The Cast: The cast is wonderful, and I have enjoyed watching them for years before this movie came out. Howeer they look like their jobs would be in their retirement home play. They are old enough to Luke Skywalker's parents. Maximillion Schell was the only person who looked the part. The Plot: I would put spoilers in here, but the plot in so lame there is no point. There is a robot gone wrong a la HAL 9000. There is a long "lost" ship with a crazy leader. Have you heard that before? Also why is the old space ship more advanced then the new one?

I love Science Fiction. I can sit through and enjoy what most consider bad Science Ficton. One of the things I love about it is that it stretches the imagination. This movie is just insulting.

Doom (2005)
6/10
Not as good as it could have been
24 September 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is a case of the film makers trying to hard to avoid critics saying there is not enough plot. The kind of person who would see this movie, like myself one other doom fans, wants one thing - action and not too much plot. This has too much plot and character development. We are do not care who these marines are. We want to see them killing monsters or get killed by monsters. Now this movie does have that, but there are too many talk-filled plot scenes in between. There are also too many scenes where they are looking for the monsters. In doom we to find the monsters, and we want to find lots and lots of them. We also want to see lots of different weapons used. We only get to see the energy blaster used twice, and we never see to kill a room full of monsters. What is with that. This movie would have been a whole lot better with more of that and less stuff about how many genes we have.
