The Bill: Supping with the Devil (2000)
Season 16, Episode 64
Is this a corrupt police officer that you love and hate?
26 August 2020
Billy Murray is a great actor who plays a police officer with the gift of the gab. He is so convincing as a man who is pretending to be nonchalant whilst restraining his panic all at the same time.

His character, DS Don Beech, bends the rules and gets results. His bosses turn a blind eye as long as the arrests keep coming in. He is good at his job and after many years they treat him as part of the furniture.

In reality DS Beech is as corrupt as they come as he is taking back handers from various shady underworld characters.

With his easy charm and strategic mind he is always one step ahead - of both sides of the law!

This episode is the beginning of an end of an era for DS Beech (without giving anything away!).

With characters such as the poseur gangster who easily gets rattled (played by Barnaby Kay), the tenacious police colleague of Don's who is secretly trying to take Beech down (played by Clara Salaman), the hard nosed but love struck detective who is a friend of Beech but does not know he is corrupt (played by Russell Boulter) and the worldly wise girlfriend of Beech who can't help falling for his charms (played by Linda Lusardi) it is quite a ride!

With a whiskey in one hand combined with a brown envelope stuffed with notes in the other, DS Don Beech is an unforgettable character.

You will be hooked on the drama or - as they used to say in the fictional Sun Hill police station - "you're nicked, sunshine!".
