Brightwood (2022)
Was this a high school project?
9 January 2024
Let's start by addressing the acting: horrible.

The dialogue: Forced, stilted, unrealistic, dumb and cookie cutter. Literally no one talks like that couple in the real world!

Their reaction to what they discover as the main problem they are faced with is so laid back they even crack jokes! Imagine a movie that is trying to be grounded, serious and scary having scenes where a guy being chased by a lion shouts to the lion "Woah... dude, not my a__se! You crazy!?". That's this film.

Or if aliens landed and the people in the movie reacts with casual dismissal before carrying on with hteir lives. That's this film.

I went in seeing it was low budget and giving it a pass because of that... but really, what was the director thinking?

Was this a weekend shoot?
16 October 2023
You know when you watch something like Debbie Does Dallas and you can clearly see the so-called actors were plucked out of strip clubs and street corners just by their sheer ineptitude to perform the simple, and I mean simple task of acting convincingly... where you look at some of the directing decisions and thing "Surely I could have done better and I 'm not even a movie director!" ?- well, this movie gets you in that gear right off the bat!

Not only does this movie. Scream low-budget, it also screams "low-talent". The line delivery is high school drama-level. The drama between the two D. I. E characters is so forced and stilted while the chemistry is turned to 0 you just can't help asking "Didn't the director, or caster not see this?".

The thing that happens to one of them on the river is so lame you think, "Dude, you even zoomed-in on the area in question and it is clear that no one could get THAT hurt from that situation".

The whole militia plot I equate to something the director's 10 year old suggested, wrote and co-directed... with veto power on the final product.

I watched this "movie" with my wife and I can absolutely guarantee that any positive review of this trd is very likely paid for or by a member of the cast! Don't waste a fraction of your very valuable time sitting down to watch this. Utter garbage.

Black Adam (2022)

Could have been way better
20 November 2022
Spoilt by including the mother, uncle and kid and making them central to the plot.

The world felt empty and uninhabited except by those 3 and small crowds that appeared and disappeared only when needed for effect during some explosion, fight or falling rubble scene.

Could have told a better story.

The black multi billionaire was not at all convincing. Yes it is a comic book thing but some things need to be grounded in a RELATEABLE reality for the viewer to not be taking out of suspension of disbelief.

Also spolit, mind you, but the obvious copying of M-C-U heroes: Deadpool, Storm who were both pointlessly included.

The Watcher (2022– )

Starts out great then falls apart mid episode 4
16 October 2022
I just randomly picked this on Netflix... watched with the wife.

We both really liked it. Connected with the husband and wife and complimented the writers/directors and cast for FINALLY showing us. Family that wasn't divorced with an angsty teen daughter trope nowhere to be seen! We were rooting for the husband and wife team.

Then around episode 4 some genius probably said "You know what, let's make this pass the "bechdel test" and a "strong female character" vehicle that explores American SJW nonsense as something serious.

All the tropes and the "on the nose" social commentary just suddenly fall out of the closet and from there it is unwatchable unless you have nothing better to do.

I don't what it is but why they had to mess everything up mid-way (did they hire Disney writers all of a sudden?)? What I find disappointing is that even though there HAD been strong female characters from episode 1 (and we LIKED THEM!!), the lady detective, the security guy, the 2 neighbours, the realtor... we were glued!

Then boom, the divorce nonsense, the angsty teen, the bad father/husband, the woman taking charge, women uniting (after getting rid of the men... because men bad) blah blah blah... The not surprising reveals. The overhanded exposition (why would you tell someonne about your criminal enterprise with the LLCs?), the forced angst and marital problems? Could they not simply review the fuller video before making beg decisions based on 10 second footage? The social media stunt - how was that portrayed as bad-father-desperate-child? I found myself eye-rolling and from episode 5, onwards we were like "well, we started, might as well finish it while we f...k". That's how bad and dumb it got.

If they had stayed on track, an easy 8/10 for me... but thanks to the wheels coming off at epi 4: 3/10. The 2nd half really is that bad.

Great show, ending spoilt by an necessary equity-driven plothole
25 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
While slow and looooong winded most of the time with conversations that drag on for what feels like half the episode the overall story is intriguing enough to keep you around to about episode 5.

At around 5 you get the sense that the mystery is over and you are just watching the interpersonal dynamics which largely get predictable.

The last 2 episodes are a wash with too much plot-armour for select characters.

Something that happens at the end leaves you asking did THAT person survive just to fill a racial and gender quota? Because if we follow the rules in the series one of the people we see in the very last shot should not be alive.

Why oh why is the stupid deaf girl still alive!!!
14 June 2021
If there is one character I can't stand it's that deaf girl. God she drives me up the wall!

She seems to be in the movie to get people killed. In the very opening scene she runs out of a car.. a place of safety because reasons.

Then that baby. Jeeeeezus!!!!

Why is it that now, the baby does not make a sound? Convenient.

Why is it, that now, the monsters take forever to attack even when someone is screaming at the top of their voice?

Pet peeve: The woman going to find a guy who is surviving on his own then blackmail him withe a baby. Then berates him for "not coming for us".

Gawd I hate this movie! I'm literally watching because there is nothing else to watch! That's how much I hate it.

Dog Soldiers (2002)
2/10
Oh please not the dog! Bah!
12 June 2021
A man could be getting killed by a dog and somehow the writer went out of his way to save the dog.

Earlier we are shown the sarj who shoots the dog is a "bad man" because he calls a dog "just a dog".

You know what gets me riled with these "not the dog!" movies? This idea that dogs are so sacred in the western culture that it is better to feed, house and clothe one that it is to help a fellow human being. True my disgusts comes from real-world examples and this is just a move but gawd!

I saw the review by the Critical Drinker on YT and decided to check it out. How does a cow, half ripped to bits by giant claws falling on your heads elicit, from trained soldiers, a "oh look, a cow... ripped to shreds, we'll check it out tomorrow g'nite lads"?

The soldiers hole up in a cottage, hiding from strange creatures which they had never seen until that day... what do they do... they chill and chat away like they have no care in the world! No one on guard, sitting by a broken window back to said window.

There's one bit where the soldiers have been picked up by a woman who just appeared out of nowhere... (did i mention the "the car wont start" trope?) the creature sticks its arm in to grab someone and... even though they all have machine guns and rifles... they start slapping the hand away. Slapping... the hand... away. Then some genius decides to cut the arm off. This whole time everyone else is just sitting here. I mean... seriously!

Then there is the over-used "phone's not working... no signal" trope.

I'm still watching... but at 55 minutes my faith is collapsing.

Great Job Netflix!
10 May 2021
This show was a complete unknown to me. Came expecting it to be another low-brow woke virtue-signalling CW-styled mishmash of simps and "strong female characters". Boy was I in for a surprise!

First off let me just say:I hate CW shows.

Now that we've got that out of the way, this series was amazing. The acting was top notch. Duhamel was unrecognizable, the guy who played his brother was just Oscar-level A-game acting and the whole cast of the 6 members of the original Union members was superb.

Blackstar's make up.... perfect! Effects... perfect, not overcooked and we didn't have stupid monologues by villains before they "pressed the button" tropes.

They should have killed-off the Chloe character. Every time she showed up she dragged the show dangerously close to CW waters.

The way they told 2 stories at the same time was genius: origin story AND present day was masterfully interwoven and the transitions from past to present was just flawless.

I remarked to my wife that this was Dark Knight or Watchmen level execution and she agreed. I actually watched it alone once then right away roped my wife in and we watched it again!

This masterpiece was put together by an artist who kept his eye on the story. No fan service, no "comedic relief" BS, no "romantic interest" formulaic crap... no strong female characters - the women were just strong characters who happened to be women. Period.

No tokenism with quotas for race and orientation... everything was just spot on natural and unforced.

Complaints?

  • To the director/writers/show-runners: Go easy on the angsty "I hate my dad" filler. You don't need it.

  • Chloe can die, she wont be missed.

  • The series season was too short! I wanted more!

Finally... Don't let social media and couch authors, activists and keyboard warriors force you to change your narrative style, pace or story... GoT made that mistake, LOST and they never recovered... just stick to your story!

I'm a satisfied customer! 11/10!

Some 8yr olds will like it
7 February 2021
This is not for you if you have more than 3.5 braincells. It is a peg below movies like Zathura... and that's not a compliment on Zathura either.

The Russians, whom I have said time and time again, are too focused on spectacle and cheesy emotion and motivations instead of simply telling a good story. IF they can stop that bad habit and mesh their clear skill with CGI we definitely have an alternative to Hollywood... EVEN with the subs and dubs!

The whole plot was a confusing mess. At one point 2 cops are chasing our hero(?) and playing cat and mouse before he meets a truck. Then the truck driver turns into .... Should I go on with the stupidity? I'll spare you. The central and titular game was nonsensical, and I would bet even 12yr olds would be asking a lot of "But why did they..." questions through out.

It's not for everyone. It's likely not for anyone, but if you are really desperate, enjoy!

Waste of film roll... and minutes.
30 January 2021
The most notable thing abou this movie is the message it sends: Bys and gals... y'all gonna need to brush o=up on yer Mandarin coz the world is a-changin'... New sherrif in town, and his name rhymes with "Chyna"! Y'see, the movie is in English and Chinese (I assume Mandarin) and... well... ok, I'm digressing.

There is no plot worth compressing your behind for an hour and then some. The bad acting and lame romance and the even lamer "strong female character" makes this as good as... well, the worst Hollywood could muster.

Should you watch it? Definitely YES... if you have nothing better to do with your life and partake in self-flaggelation from time to time ... throughout the day.

Coma (I) (2019)

Style over substance - boring
30 January 2021
I don't know why but practically every Russian production I watch has no clear plot. Why are characters doing this or that? Why is the dialogue so stilted (even after factoring in the dubbing might have lost something), the over-compensation with glitzy effects and CGI. The uneasy feeling that it's just a mash-up of key US plots and scenes to appeal to a wider audience. The ridiculous over-acting and romance that just feels plastic and wedged-in to fill the quotas. The desperate attempt to be cool without clear rationale for it.

This movie was all of that!

"Phantom" was a stupid, pointless quota-character intended as the bully. Tank, The Architect, the clothes the protagonist wore (low budget Neo?) ... I felt like I was watching a bad Matrix remake. Even the "jump" scenes were Matrix rip-offs. Inception was ripped off. Annihilation was ripped-off.

I fast-forwarded and gave up after a while. People saying "for the budget it's a great movie" stop applauding mediocrity! It was boring as a story. The effects were nothing new and the actors could not act to save their lives! I didn't even bother to figure out the rules of living in the Koma because it was utter tripe to begin with.

A few years ago there was another Russian "blockbuster" with a half-bear half-guy superhero and another one with tentacles (or something), and some years before we had DayWatch and Nightwatch... the same "Let's show amazing effects and forget about plot and motivation" approach was used. It was a waste of effort then... it is a waste of effort now.

You can clearly see the Russian directors have a sense for entertaining but they are too busy copy-pasting pastiches of American movies to just stop and put together decent, grounded and clearly though-out stories. If they can JUST fix that we have an alternative to Hollywood. Same problems are evident in Chinese movies by the way.

Even more boring than the first one
26 December 2020
I decided to give this one a bash with my wife on boxing day. I have never been able to finish the first one but decided to make an effort this time as it's a holiday. Let me start by saying this is a total waste of eyes and time. My guess is there is a new genre of romantic-drama-scifi(?) that is trying to pander to the bunch demanding "strong *** characters" in scifi.... maybe this was made for them and they like it and found it as good and exhilarating as Iron Man 1, but my wife checked out before I did! It is THAT boring! The film doesn't know what is supposed to be. There are all the cues you'd expect from "modern" female directors... the "men are evil hints", the all-women scenes which just cannot exist in the real world, the endless dialogue that goes nowhere other than to check Bechdel scoresheets boxes, the bright colours, the "oh my god those shoes are hot!" and the gratuitous violence against men pandering, the "strong female character" (literally!), the leering and lecherous men... I could go on.

In the end I picked up my laptop and stared working, my wife started browsing facebook and we let the thing play in the background.

Don't waste your time, this can't even stand next to a Superman or batman movie and claim to be a scifi, or superhero movie.

Glad it got canned
17 November 2020
I said it on their Twitter timeline... you can't build a scifi-action show on sappy mommy-loves-her-booboo drama. 24 tried that with Kim in the first few episodes but rescued the show by ditching her by the 2nd season. Now Manny Coto tries again this time with an even younger child. If you want to write drama, just write drama and target drama fans. If you are going to go tech and scifi then we are here for the tech and the scifi and maybe the action as well... not long, boring bedtime chats between mommy and son, and women talking about the challenges of motherhood and waah waah waahtelse.

Glad to see the back of this.

Don't waste your time
31 October 2020
Amazing start that promised an engaging scifi movie... then...splat... the whole things came crashing down after about 10 minutes! The rest was just unbearable.

I kept waiting for the original movie from the first 10 minutes to show up again but then they introduce the love interest and from the moment she walked onto the scene it was always falling further apart. She didn't know what he was talking about yet she came to meet him to talk about the very thing she said she didn't know!

UFOs have been seen by many witnesses over the city but everyone just acts like business as usual. Androids? Really!!!? There is currently a trend, motivated by the "inclusivity" movement that is trying to wedge drama and romance into scifi so that a certain demographic can feel acknowledged... the experiment has failed and Proximity is exhibit A proof of that failure!
