Shattered (II) (2022)

Putting the "Shat" in Shattered
25 February 2024
This might be one of the worst films I've ever seen.

Let's start at the script - the dialogue is anything but natural, it's almost as if an AI system wrote a generic horror/thriller movie's script. Either that or a five year old, and that might even be discrediting a five year old.

Any good actor might be able to improvise, ad-lib or add some level of realism to the poor script, but these actors are anything but.

Cameron Monaghan, I had believed to be a decent actor prior to seeing this film. However he comes across as wooden, uninterested and stale. I'm not sure how they managed to wrangle John Malkovic into this, this film somehow even manages to make him look like someone fresh out of acting college.

However the worst of all is the female lead - played by Lilly Krug. Did she win a competition to star in a film? She is beyond robotic, every line she delivers is woefully bad and almost comedic in its delivery. The script is terrible but her acting might be the worst part. I was almost convinced that it was part of her character, the insincerity and deadpan deliver. It quickly became apparent that it's just her poor ability to act and show any other emotion other than child-like smarminess.

The plot is uninspired, generic and done to death. Nothing new, nothing exciting and frankly boring.

Save your self some time and don't ever watch this movie - or do, and find some humour in the awful acting.

A sequel no one was asking for, nor needed.
15 December 2023
Despite the mixed reviews for the first 'Your Place or Mine' film, I actually quite enjoyed it. A little corny, and a little cliché at times, but that's what Christmas films are for. I also managed to find the first one funny and emotional at times.

This sequel, however, has ruined any fondness of the first film that I previously had.

The likeable female lead character, Hayley, from the first film becomes insufferable in this film, boiled down to a naïve character who does nothing but complain throughout the film, jumping to conclusions and offering not much else.

Asa Butterfield's character doesn't offer much else, although a weak script and lack of real storyline may be at fault here.

Character arcs from the first film, like the one with James' father, are also completely negated in this film.

The family of Hayley also come across as exceptionally ungrateful in this film, and frankly rude. A likeable family and the "hero's" of the first film become the villains of this film, with Daniel May's character leading the charge as possibly one of the most unlikeable character's I've had on my screen this year.

Not a sequel we needed, I'd urge anyone who watched and enjoyed the first film to not bother watching this one.

Obnoxiously Complex with the Occasional Saving Grace
19 September 2020
First all I'll say this is, to date, the only film I've ever had to walk out of the cinema from. And I've even sat through Movie 43.

I'll start with a couple of positives. The 2 action sequences in the first hour and a half are semi-decent (even if the music score is deafening), and Robert Pattinson's acting was very good (despite not having a clue who his character is and his purpose in the film).

Now on to the negatives. From the onset we are introduced to a nameless protagonist who works for some never confirmed organisation, and is then drafted into another never confirmed organisation. This character procedes to jump between locations in short scenes, meeting other dull characters who serve no purpose except leading the protagonist on an easter egg hunt and usually have completely unintelligible dialogue sequences. I'm not sure if this is a fault with the sound design, but this issue is not helped by other scenes where characters shout over fuzzy radio channels with the overwhelming musical score drowning them out.

After an hour and a half, myself and my girlfriend still had no clue what was actually going on, who any characters were or understood the purpose of the scene.

I do understand the concept of a reversed entropy bullet or object is difficult to comprehend, however this is not helped by a needlessly complex and confusing plotline. If you can even refer to this film as having a plotline.
